This is a mix of S/C, MM, Legends, THM, etc. Pretty well any brand on the market.

If they shopped around I would guess it could be done for about $1 a song. Without a lot of time effort easily almost double that.

They might have bought out a few legit KJs collections at half price or better, but after the first time they would get mostly dups.

I have gone all legal with my songlist so far and I have spent about $6500 on 6000 songs.

Do you think that kj spent 90-100k on thier song list? Someone might have but most I seriously doubt it.

I have a 7,000 song legit collection I got for less than $3,000. Admittedly it includes SGB, but it also includes 3000 DK, PH, and SPC songs at less than 33 cents per. I paid on average 80 cents a track for my Chartbuster, and probably just over a dollar for SoundChoice. Legends averaged 70 cents or so.

5365 different songs by 1699 different artists.
6650 total songs on 478 disks.

I have removed ~500 dups that were of brands I consider not so good (SGB, CKC, MM, SAVA, Nutech), which is why the song/disk average is so low. Only 355 are SoundChoice, 396 Chartbuster, 347 Legends. There are 309 SPC, 1590 DK, 682 SGB, 998 PH and SINC.

At this point, I get almost all my tracks by download -- I have stopped buying disks. I would buy a *lot* more SoundChoice at $2.00-3.00 a track or so if I could download them, and I would pay $2.00 for more Chartbuster on the same basis. But for now I am happy with the stuff Tricerasoft has.

If I were a working KJ, I would invest about $1500 right away for SoundChoice and Chartbuster disk sets.

Crunching all that together with my little knowledge, I would think you could get 90,000 songs for about $50,000. Certainly attainable over a 15 year KJ career.

$1 a song was a real good price, but now i say $2-3 is average.  Some are higher $4-5, if you buy custom discs.

So maybe $200,00-$250,000 or more.

Average amount to spend for a KJ beginner library. LMAO

Seems I'm running into more and more of these guys who brag about having 90,000 songs, and none of them drives anything newer than a '90s minivan so I figure they've worked 24 hours a day, 9 days a week, for the last 50 years to buy all their music! Oh, nasty sarcasm.  I figured $250G... just figured I'd go to the source, those who have been busy buying music legally for the last 15 years, to see what they've got invested. I know what I've got invested.

People always ask me what it costs to get into the business. When I tell them what I've got invested in music, which is the main draw to my show (everything current, all the oldies, etc.) their jaws about drop to the floor. I figured I've got well over $30,000 in music over the last 12 years, and probably a lot more than that if I'm completely honest with myself. Would love to put a glitch into every harddrive that someone bought on e-bay or wherever for $500.

I feel your pain.
Just down the road from me some guy is boasting 149,000 songs. My response is always, he must be illegally purchasing songs. People don't care, but it makes me feel better to say it.  LMAO

I guess in the long run it really doesn't bother me. How many songs you have isn't the only thing that makes for a great show.

I don't have people complaining that I don't have a song they want to sing, so this guy can boast all he wants.

I have accumulated about 14,000 songs in 8-9 years by purchasing discs online and thru ebay auctions. I recently found an excellent deal online from from a KJ that was going out of business and needed immediate cash. I purchased his entire library of CDG's (about 25,000 songs including about 20-30% dupes ) and a couple of JVC Triple Trays for about $4,500 which I considered it to be about $0.25 cents on the dollar. I hopped on a plane to view the inventory and make sure it was for real. Once I looked everything over and saw that most of it was SC,CB,THM ,Pioneer, and Legends  I couldn't get him paid fast enough..LOL  I was hoping that I would run across a deal like that one day, I was in the right spot at the right time.

Back to your Queston
:  My best guess on 90,000 songs would be about $130,000
Most KJ's would never invest that kind of money in music. I've got about $40K in my main systems songbook selection. That includes the new buy. I'm about done buying discs at this point and will probably purchase songs by Custom Discs after this.

With the new songs I just purchased it's gonna take a ton of time ripping them and sorting out the dupes with my current library. I'm thinking several months worth of work in my spare time LOL

149,000 songs, but they always forget to tell you how many are duplicates.

Write your song books 10 different ways and you could say you have more.

Alpha by artist.

Alpha by song.

Then by discs number.

Then by disc company.

All the country discs.

All the rocks discs.

All the dead artists.

One hit wonders.

By decade.

You get the picture.  Make it 14" thick.  Put it on wheels.
