I'm a computer idiot.
(seriously.. read on and you'll see the truth of that statement, Lol)
About an hour ago, we had a power failure.
(okay, Odie, so it wasn't a Canby-wide power failure, it was just my house)
I live in an older home and the electricity has been funking out on me for the last 6 months or so. Half the house will just randomly lose electric. Sometimes it's a breaker, sometimes it isn't and it just pops back on magically in a few days. Go figure, my landlord doesn't want to put money in the place cause it's sold to the city in the spring.
Anyhow.... it popped off about an hour ago, while I was on my computer. Its taken me this long to get my computer booted again.
Every time I tried it would freeze while booting and say (please don't quote me, my memory is not what it should be tonight) ... But something along the lines of *Diskette 0 not found* and it wants me to hit F1 to retry or F2 to..... ummm.... hell, what did it say?
Whatever it says to go into the place where you change your (bios?) settings. You know, where you set the boot order and all that?
Anyhow. I tried using my WinXP cd to "repair" it. At sometime in the past, stupid me set an "administrator password" which I can't (tonight) recall. I lost a hard drive to this same problem once... could never get it to reboot completely.
Nothing would work- I THINK it was not recognizing that I had a hard drive at all... when I tried to F12 (please don't laugh at my dumb comp language) it didn't give the option to "boot to hard drive C".
Finally, for some unknown reason, I asked it to "boot to hard drive partition" and I'm back on.
IN the future..... if anyone is following this line of nonsense...., what should I have done? I don't even know HOW I got it to boot up again, it was sheer luck. When I have comp issues, I'm too stubborn (and usually broke) to hire professional help, so I bluff my way through it... and usually, I get it going again, but don't really know how I did it.
Is this a stupid question? Lmao... probably. But it would be nice if someone would indulge me, even if just to say "yeah, you're an idiot"
(don't you dare... that's a moot but obvious point anyhow)

Mrs. BlueStainedShoes,
You can Use Advanced Password Recovery to retrieve your Password.
Create a BackUp CD. Load the Disc and it will Boot your system.
For someone not very computer savy... take your PC in for Repair.
Adjusting the Bios is simple and won't cost much.
Many programs will BackUp. Nero, Sonic, Some External HD'S, etc.
You may have one on your computer. Check to see.
Hope This Helps,
sw00000p

Hello Ms. Moron! As a fellow member or MOA (Morons Of America) I would like to welcome you! Frankly I have to admire you for not totally freaking out as I probably would have! Well, if it said it was trying to find a diskette, it sounds like it couldn't find a disc in the A: drive, your 3 1/2" floppy drive. Your BIOS was probably set to search the A: drive first. Luckily you were able to instruct it to locate your system in the hard drive petition. I obviously do not have a good piece of advice for you. I'm sure at least Ollie or Keith will come up with something.
Creating a boot backup disc like the previous poster said is a very good idea.

Now that you have it working.... Create a BackUp CD. And..... sure, but how? I know everyone says "make a backup", but HOW to do that? Really, I'm not computer savvy at all. I only know stuff that I've been through. I've never made a backup cd. Quote: I don't know if you have a Recovery Partion, but if you create a Backup Disc, simply load the Disc and it will Boot your system. I have the option to restore to a previous version of Windows... but I can't DO that when I can't get booted up at all. Quote: Check to see. Again, I don't know how. I don't have a "backup disk" .... of this I'm certain. I went online on my laptop, got some ideas from different forums, but none of that worked. For some reason, it wouldn't let me boot to dos to run chkdsk or anything like that either. It just seems like I did the right thing..... without knowing what the heck I did. I'm booted back up by sheer luck and pure accident. Story of my life. Gosh, where is Foxe girl when you need her? Lol She's one smart lil' chica. Quote: Hope This Helps
Yeah, you did. Cause now I'm googling "making a backup cd for WInXP"
Thank you.

Ever hear about battery backups, so you have time to safely shut down your computer during a power loss?

Here's a site that may help:
http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm
Create Windows XP Setup diskettes
Microsoft has downloads available for users who still need to create bootable diskettes for Windows XP. These downloads can be found through KB310994.
Additional help and information about troubleshooting bootable CDs not booting is found on document CH000217.
Hope this helps,

Yeah, I'm researching that. Can you BELIEVE nimrod doesn't know HOW?

Nooooo.... is that something I can maybe pick up at radio shack or fry's? Cause for ME... it would be worth it. It really ticks me off when the electric goes down and I have comp issues. Normally, it's okay... this is the second time it's done this. Like I said, last time I gave in and bought a new hd.. and lost TONS of stuff on my old one. This time, I somehow got it back on. (again.. problem is... it was luck only that saved it)
Thanks for the suggestion, it's honestly something I've never heard of, but I'll look into it.

Thanks a mill.... I'm heading there now:) I really hate this stuff... and I hate it more cause I'm so computer dense, and not the type of person to haul my computer off to a shop to be repaired.

You can find at http:/www.APC.com
It gives me about 30 Minutes of Power when the Power goes out.
Hope This Helps,

I've been reading there. Does everything ALWAYS have to be saved on a stupid floppy? I don't use those- at all. Like I said earlier, mine's not even hooked up and functioning. I've gotten used to using a flash drive, that's what I use to transfer everything... even the songs I record are put on the flash drive to go from my laptop to my desktop for subbing. (my laptop internet connection is SO slow...)
Guess I'll have to go get some floppy disks, seriously, I don't keep them around cause I don't use them. (pathetic, huh?)

Me neither. I mean, it's IN my computer, but it's kinda unhooked/bypassed at the moment. I literally did not use it. Floppy's are SO yesterday. I used to use cd's for everything (mostly music) but it gets too spendy, and I don't have an MP3 player, so I use a flash drive. Works fine for me.

What?!?!?! And how would you get a virus by using a flash drive to store things on from your personal pc? :dontknow:
Are you trying to confuse me? I'm computer dense, but not ignorant. (yeah.. there's a difference)

Some use flash to obtain various media from downloads or sharing.
Then transfer the Virus to PC.
Your ok if you only use it for your pc.

No, no... I get my downloads from friends, lmao... they take the risk, not I, then they send me a clean file. I took my chances with places like Kazaa and Limewire long ago.. and learned the hard way;) I only put stuff on it directly from my hard drive- and usually just songs or docs for work. I've learned my lesson- after a couple hard drives, about viruses.
