For some reason Greeley is the cold spot of the state and nation. Some thermometers dipped to 20 below last night. Right now it is about 15 below and 6" of snow.

When it gets to 40-50 below a white man's eyes water and freezes shut. The indians in Alaska dont have this problem. When it gets 40-60 below the moisture in the smoke going up a chimney freezes and turns into ice. After a few days it plugs up the chimney.

For about 9 years I lived north of Amarillo, Texas.  When I moved to the Texas Panhandle, people said it was not the end of the world, but you could see it from there.  That was the coldest place I have ever lived in my life.  There was nothing to stop the cold north air that blew off of the rockies 45 miles north of me, not a tree, bush, or mesquite tree.  The only fence was barbed wire and most of those were blown down.  I stood one evening at a friends house looking out his front room window watching about 1500 head of cattle die next to a fence in a snow storm. There was nothing we could do to save them. I could not wait to move back south again.  I live in West Texas down close to Odessa and Midland and right now, 11:30 pm, and it is 45 degrees.  It would be a great night if the wind was not blowing about 10 miles per hour.  When it is nearly calm, it is great outside. Most of the day I wore only a short sleeved shirt outside.  I don't envy you and your cold weather. I love this part of Texas!--Mike
