I've been thinking a lot about the last 10 years -- the good and the bad. Are you feeling happier/better off now in 2007 or 10 years ago in 1997? I'm not strictly talking about money matters, although that's part of it. I mean emotionally, physically, money wise, how you felt about yourself then and now/your future/your family's future/ the world's future at that time and now -- take an average if you can.

I started running into serious probs around 1957. I think that was the year I was dropped on my head. 97 was better, 87 I was extremely ill, 77 is a decade I just have no recollection of, 67 I was extremely ill.. and currently I'm here with you folks... Need I say more ? Hopefully 2017 I'll be somewhere in life that's comfortable. I've yet to find that place.

from 85 till 97 were the worst years of my life. in 98 I turned 40 and although I spent 97 till 2001 on the dole I cant say they were bad years apart from never having enough money. We grew our own veg and so we didnt starve but the luxuries were few and far between.
Financially NOW we are better off than we have ever been. We are debt free, mortgage free and obviously if I am looking at traveling next year have a little disposable income.
To answer the better off thing from the perspective of values etc then I think NZ would have to go further back than 87 probably by at least a decade, perhaps two.
Back to the days of corporal punishment in schools. Back to the days were people were actually held accountable for their actions and the politically correct brigade didnt exist.

Is it 2007 already?
For me every day is a holiday, and every meal a banquet. I eat til I get sleepy, and sleep til I get hungry. I flirt with every skirt and kick every cat I pass.....And usually I score hits on both
How can I not be happy?
Unhappy is for when you are dead.

2007 is infinately better than '97 was.
-fewer hours worked now- only part-time vs. 70 hour work weeks, NO stress, bought a beach house, lowered cholesterol 55 points, but still got more gray hairs! ![lol lol](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif)

Odie, you and your danged pshychotic evaluation questions. LMAO
Lemme see... To be honest, I guess I'd have to say I was more happy and content with life in 1997... but for 2007 I have a better outlook on life and better expectations for the future. Money matters? Blah, who cares about money? I'm much more financially secure now than then, but that isn't what life is all about to me.
In 97 my kids were still small. (my youngest was 4.... now he's 14 and bigger than me by a head) I miss the times when they were young and full of questions and still believed in Santa. I homemade my daughter a new dress every year for christmas (not anymore, mom can sew Daisy Kingdom dresses, but not designer label ones) , and she'd want me to braid her hair and make it all pretty- the boys were simple enough that trucks and GI Joes were great christmas presents- now they are all high tech. LOL BUT... it's exciting now to be entering a new phase of my life with grandkids, and watching my own kids become young adults.
Maybe you should ask again in 2017 and I'll have a firmer answer about what year was MY best.... :D

nearly nothing in my life is as it was in 97, with the exception of my two cats. in 97 I was living with an abusive cheating beotch, working 50+ hours a week, and then I would go to my shop and work on my race car about 3 hours per night, more on saturday, and all day on sunday.. (yeah that will burn you out). stock car racing was my whole focus. I have always loved music but had not done anything with it in several years at that point. I was working in a different type of job that was making me miserable.
NOW im married, with children.I have a job I love and only have to work 3 nights per week. obviously I run my own karaoke business on 3 other nights, that's something I love so it really is not work. I am more stable in money matters than ever, not that money buys happiness. not having things you need does bring the reverse

Financially things were way better in 1997 for me but everything else is much better now. In 1997 I was not a musician, I just worked really hard at my business all the time. Now I have lots of time to do musical stuff and play witht he grandkids but it's because construction and real estate has taken such a nose dive in the last few years here. We are way poorer and facing probably another year of low income but in a lot of ways I am enjoying the break and the extra fee time. It's all good...

Things are finally looking up for me. Although I still think I work to much, financially I don't worry as much. My love life is good and the kids are healthy and happy.

1997
Everyone made more money then.
The cost of living wasn't as high. Think about it.
How much has it gone up in 10 years. Nobody's wages went up that much.

not true for all sidewinder...went from $33k in '97 to $73k in 2007. Best year was '05 with $104k- depends on what you've done with your life and especially if you started your own business and made it grow through hard work!!!
the rest of what you said was accurate though.

Your buying power is still much lower. You are still broke. It's just broke at a higher level.
I had more money in my pocket when i made $10 clear, a week.
Inflation still has out paced most income raises.
