Seasons greetings to all technically minded. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what converter (preferably free) I could use to convert a vob file to mpeg or similar?
My son's performance of a month ago in the local operatic show, I would like to convert from vob (he copied the orig disc he was given tohis harddrive then gave the orig to his nana cos she had pneumonia at the time and couldnt see the show)

So any suggestions of what prog to use that would convert files already on a harddrive would be much appreciated.

I use the www.erightsoft.com Super program to do all my audio conversions.  It works really well and I have the profile for the best conversion to YouTube already setup.  It's a free download and it works great.  If you decide to try it just hit me with an email to the address in my profile and I will be happy to send you the super profile to convert it.  Took a bit of trial and error but eventually I got it working as well as Youtube can go.  They still compress it just a bit more but this is the format they say to use for the "Best" conversion in their help files.  It also works great for MySpace and the other hosting sites.

Do you have Nero, Roxio, Sonic or simular DVD burning software on your PC?
Today most PC'S come with a DVD authoring software and will convert a vob file to mpeg or avi file.
Load the file as if you were burning a DVD and select (EXPORT) and save to HD as mpeg.

actually swoop nero wont even load the bruddy file. the guy who supplied the dvd doesnt actually know what hes doing. so it wont add it says disc is full and I havent even asked it to burn

Are you loading VOB files from the HD?
Is the folder like this? VIDEO_TS

AND......within the video_ts folder does it contain the following files:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB

no my son simply sent thru a file to me that he had copied to his harddrive from the dvd he had been given of the performance.
Now I attempted to copy the dvd and couldnt. He managed to copy to his hd but couldnt then create another dvd so there is something amiss with the file I suspect. Having said that I can get it to play on my puter. I just want to create a copy in a format that I can upload to myspace or youtube or wherever cos to be honest his performance is outstanding

What does the file from the DVD look like?

Mrs. Morgan,

VOB files can be quite large. Perhaps free up some space on your C: Drive
and give it another whirl.

have done and have converted via nero as the prog that snoopy suggested threw me an error message. Snoopy if you are reading this I sent you a screen shot and if you can suggest anything I would still like to try it as the nero file is very ordinary quality. But tis converted and it is a small enough file for me to upload so stand by while I find somewhere to upload it to

I knew you could do it. You can easily configure Nero to produce High Quality,
but your files will be Much Larger. Adjust you compression, refer to Output File Size,
and fine a happy medium so you can still Upload with Better quality.

well thank you sir, only prob is I cant seem to upload to photobucket...it leads me to believe I am masquerading as a redhead with a high IQ  :shock:

Sorry about not getting right back to you Morgan, it was midnight and I had to go in and spend some time with Mrs Snoopy.  The trouble is that your spyware scan took the link to the web registration off the Super setup file and just left the stub, if you disable the scan for this download it will work fine and after you install and run the file once allowing to create the cookie needed to lrun it each time you can re-start the scan program.  The other situation might have been that there wasn't room to download the entire program and all the conversion DLLs so the cabs weren;t all downloaded.  Having a full C drive will do this sometimes.  In any case so sorry it didn;t work right for you.  Hundreds of folks I know use this software all the time to create their youtube vids.  Might be worth the trouble to get it installed actually...

Hey Morgan, if you want to try something else you can set up an easy free acct on www.mediafire.com and upload the VOB file to there, it allows some pretty big file transfers up to 100meg.  If you can put it on there and send me a link I will download it and convert it for you at maximum file quality for youtube and send it back later this morning.  I have an early appt but I would be more than happy to do this for you right after I get back today.  If it is a bigger file than 100meg the only other way i have found to exchange it is using Windows Live Messenger and set up a sharing folder on there, you can put the file in the sharing folder and it uploads to my computer where I can convert it and send the converted file back for you to upload.  

Sorry about the hassle with the program, it really does work quite well, I think i got it from Soundclick, the music hosting site.

thanks Snoop I am gonna spend some time today on cleaning my hd and shifting some things to the other partition, then I will try downloading again you are both reallyhelpful thanks heaps
