The comics won't be the problem.  The problem is the singers getting mad about not being able to sing and have fun like they thought was going to take place.  The bar owner switching things up could cost him money if people get mad and go somewhere else.

It should be Aaarg! Bar Owners.    What are they thinking. Never mind i just answered my own question. They are never thinking anything.

LMAO

I realize not all bar owners are goofy, but most seem to be. Just look at all the bad KJs out there. I think in any profession you have good and bad. I guess my bar owner could be worse. I think his biggest fault is not listening to people when they disagree.

We had a club that did comedy with karaoke & it was a joke (no pun intended), half the people there wanted comedy, the others complained there was no karaoke time to sing since the comedians seemed to go over their allotted time.  Wasn't a fun experience, I happened to be there for the comedy as I had just gotten over a cold & couldn't sing...never stress your voice when sick!
If you going to do comedy or karaoke, do them separately.

Heckle Heckle Heckle

And if a prop comic is on stage, I believe it's a law to toss beer bottles at them.

last night I had a guy bring up his buddy to do a joke when it was his turn, then another grabs the mic , then a third. meanwhile its 1:30 and ive got 4 songs to get in before 1:45. I bumped the guy as the next singer had not sang at all yet...talk about a little girl crying fit!!  I doubt he pulls that crap again!  I did let him sing, then he pulls the "ooh thats not my version" crap. eergh, the first time ive wanted to lay a guy out at a show

Yikes it sounds like you had a rough night.

People don't understand jokes don't go over well when you are doing karaoke. Usually it's a nonsinger that just wants some of the spot light. I don't mind if someone asks to do a joke because it is a rare thing. The biggest problem I find is people simply don't hear the joke. You have to have a strong voice and pronounce clearly. In a loud bar the joke just sounds like mumbling over the mic. I end up feeling bad for the person because no one responds.

This seems so obvious, It's as simple as each  of those comics have friends, friends equals more people in the bar more people in the bar equals more money. It's no different than when a bar has a jam session under the guise that they are looking for new talent, usually they're not. This may come as a shock, but even bad bands have friends, lots of friends, just like bad comics have friends and bad karaoke singers have friends and yes, I suspect even bad karaoke hosts have friends. The owner is simply trying to increase his customer base. I deal with several bar owners and most of them will tell you that they know a certain band is terrible but they have friends and they will come and see them especially if they are only there for one weekend every couple of months or so. Some bands, singers and comics actually develope a fan base based on talent, but many rely on their friends for support. Don't be surprised if new comics aren't added as time goes by to tap into the "friend base". Welcome to economics 101.

I would love to think you are correct in your assumption. I was thinking like you the first time they came in that maybe we'd get some new people. The problem is when he had the comics come in as a test run, they brought no people with them. Unless you want to count the one ladies underage daughter and boyfriend that she was counting on for a ride home.  LMAO

This is the confusion. Why kill the crowd that I bring in already? There is no guarentee the comics will bring anyone new in. While karaoke is a sure thing unless people don't show because they didn't like the comedian idea.

I am hoping for the best. We'll just have to wait and see.  :D

Why does every bar owner think that there always has to be something else mixed with the karaoke night?

If the comics are so good they can stand on their own night.

If the band is so good they can stand on their own night.

If the karaoke is so good it can stand on it's own night.

I would take it personal. Meaning the bar owner didn't think my karaoke was good enough. Or that the comics need some help.  I don't want to help anyone else except me. A good karaoke night is hard enough to build and maintain.

How do you take it?

My "ex-business partners" used to run Karaoke at a bar that was located inside of a Denny's resteraunt so the room was already VERY tiny.  One night that was scheduled to be Karaoke, they booked a band as well.  Everything went ok for the most part, but there were some singers that were a little ticked off cause there wasn't nearly as much Karaoke time as there was band time.  The other problem was that besides the usual karaoke crowd (which always packed the room) there was also the band's fan's, and the band's gear in this little tiny room.  God, it was so hot and so crowded!

It would be my suggestion to bring up the point that these comics don't bring any business and if anything they will probably drive business away since the Karaoke singers will most likely go somewhere else where they can actually sing more than 1 or 2 rotations in the night.

Good luck with the situation though, and let us know how it works out.

I truly think he is just trying to do something special for NYE. He knows karaoke brings in a loyal crowd. I definately don't take it personal.

I did have a talk with him about it. I don't feel threatened by the comics at all. In fact I like that I will get a break during the night while they are on. My pays the same with or without them. I explained this and then let him know that people were complaining about not wanting the comics. He of course was offended that his idea wasn't going over well. I just asked that we have fewer of them. I didn't ask to illiminate them. He told me if people complained to send them to him. So at least he is fully aware ahead of time how people feel about the comics.

You don't, but i bet the singers do.

Don't forget that this is the loyal crowd that repeats week after week bringing in a steady revenue for the bar.  These other nights/goofy ideas, are hit and miss income. I think most of the singers are going to be mad about it.

I really can't blame them. In the end the bar income will take a hit and it may actually backfire. If it does, it could very well reflect on you. Damaging your reputation some.

It won't damage my reputation. I don't own the bar and it was not my decision to hire them.

But if people totally hate it I can tell him I won't do karaoke if he has comics next time. Just like I did this year with having a band and karaoke. I told him he had to pick one. It is either the band or me - not both. That killed our crowd last year. I was never blaimed for that decision last year on NYE. He knew he blew it. It killed my karaoke crowd that night, but did not damage my reputation.

The funny thing is there is no way he can have comics without karaoke or a band. They need our sound system.
