it could also be found under the heading "you just never know"
it seems the owners of my main venue (there are four owners) were tired of running a bar and were planning to sell. this was not news to insiders, but one of the patrons (who is a regular singer) found that one of the interested buyers was a fellow from korea who wanted to make the bar an all korean karaoke bar.
the regular patron immediately bought the bar! fortunately for me i have always been very nice to this man even though he sometimes gets silly drunk and rude and can't sing a lick!
it does show you that you should at the very least be cordial to everyone. you never know who may be your next boss!

You are so right! Years ago I left a company for a job with a competitor. Three years later my new company was bought out. The company that bought them was the company I left. My old boss was my new boss. I was glad I didn't burn my bridges.

"yea sure OK Here's my address.." When I got back I sent it.
10-12 years later I was sitting at a bar and a voice behind "Give that man a beer!!
I turned around this guy said member me? Nope I member you member that $20 you sent me back? ![Surprise :O](./images/smilies/emot-eek.gif)

What a great compliment too. He obviously wanted to make sure you were there for him to do his karaoke when the bar was sold. Now that's cool.
I hope he turns out to be a good bar owner for you. :hi5:

That's really cool!!! We have been thinking about buying our favorite bar recently!! Not so sure about patrons buying the bars they go to. not sure how well they will be at being owners. (I hope that makes sense)
You guys doing a show on NYE???

whats wrong with workin NYE? for me its a double pay night or more. and around here we call it "amature night" the night when all the non bar goers go out and drink it up. mostly they end up drunk by 11:30 an have to go home but thats half the fun for me...the drunks who arent used to being drunks. just stay off the roads from 10 till 3 and your fine

I have noticed through the years less ansd less people come out for NYE because they want to drink at home and not have to worry about driving. We always have a nice crowd, but nothing like it used to be.

Well Babs, it appears that I'm going to have a pretty full house for my impromptu NYE gig - and he called and doubled what he offered me...People are e'ing me and asking if they need to make reservations. WOOHOOO.... This place is kind of small, very nice, owners are great, and I guess it's the kind of place people are starting to gravitate to for a nice and relaxed New Year's Eve, with good food and drink and great singing. I am SOOOOO relieved....
(this should probably be under the NYE thread...)

the major problem is that we have a party at the house every year. sort of tradition with our closest friends. keeps us safe and out of harms way. last year i agreed to work simply beacuse i was begged to work so we had the our traditional party at the bar. unfortunately since i was wokring i didn't get to enjoy it much, nor did my wife since i was working. i told them that night it was a once in a lifetime deal. they understood, but there's no harm in them asking again. i just say no.

From my experience, just because they have the money to buy it, doesn't mean they know how to run it. You could still be out of a job down the road. Remember 4 out of every 5 new business' fail within the first 5 years. He just started a new business.

another "pays to be nice" story. I found out this week that A guy who has sung at my shows at two different places now, and his twin brother are now taking over there dads bar. It also turns out that dad has come to one of my shows , and had a great time. this week the twin brother also showed up. he introduced himself, asked for a card and said he WILL call me for some shows. He sang a few songs this week. the first brother always sings a few. they really partied it up, with a number of there friends. the first brother always sings "OK" But we do make sure to tell everyone that they did a great job. yeah we say it to everyone, not always the same way but complements are free. I cant help but think that the way they were treated at our shows may be helping us get in there bar soon.

I feel your pain. I always do karaoke for our employee and regular's Xmas Party. We had it yesterday. I would love to join in on the fun, but of course I can't because I'm working. The owner has free drinks for about 2 hours and the patrons and employees bring in food. It looks like a lot of fun. LMAO The bummer for me is I am so busy I can bearly have time to talk to anyone. There were so many people there it took almost 3 hours to get through one round of singers.

one word babs "co-host". I hate doing a show without one! this week we have two shows on weds night so he does one and i do one, it sucks but its a buisness and we have to do what we have to do. starting mid jan he will be doing a show a week by himself, but that was his call, I work my regurlar job on sat nights. I just went and bought him a new mackie powered mixer and another two sm58s with 500 series monster cables for it today. that stuff will stay at his show so he doesn't have to move a pa by himself.
I know im getting off topic with this, but the right co host is a GOD SEND!

I've never had a co-host. I figure I've done this many years by myself why start now. Honestly I don't like sharing my pay check. :dancin:

INterestingly, co-hosting has become more common in my neck'o-the-woods. There is a couple who do a local show where he does nothing but load music, she walks around carrying a cordless, talking, announcing people, etc. Same at another place, but the woman is at the console and the guy is the roaming KJ/DJ. I'm with you Babs, don't want to share! I've done it by myself for so long, too - I'd probably just keep butting in over my co-host on the mic anyway.

I had a co-host when I had my mobile show, it was actually nice, I just ran the sound, she worked the crowd & announced. It was nice. I would like one for my current club, but probably won't as stated, I like my paycheck to myself.

i don't so much have a cohost as someone who fills in for me when i can't. i've never been so busy that i couldn't hadnle the rotation or go pee, or whatever. not saying i haven't had long rotations (sometimes 20 or more singers), but i can always find time during a longer song to take care of business.

my co host gets around 20% but is happy to do 50 to 75% of the hosting, leaving me time to talk to singers , shmooze the owner / manager. and just make sure everything runs smoothly. I also do most of the mixing and can listen better. due to the fact that he has trained under me, and has learned my ways I do not hesitate to send him as my fill in when I can not do a show. starting mid jan he will have a show a week by himself. we split these 50/50 and I will make back everything ive paid him in the last year within 2 months.
