As previously mentioned I am hired for NYE at my reg Saturday Karaoke Bar.
Management leaves it up to me on how to run the  show 100% karaoke vs 50/50 Karaoke Dance etc.

New Years Eve I would like to have more of a DJ than Karaoke - Only for 2 reasons
#1) I'm not sure how many of my regs will be there
#2) I do not want Ballad Heaven on NYE

In any case what I would like to do is have more of a SING ALONG.
If my regs show up I could more or less "pick" the songs they sing that are also crowd pleasers and sing alongs --ie:
Margaretteville
Sweet Caroline
Brown Eyed Girl
Brandy
At the Hop
Little Bitty
This way I could SHAPE the night but still have a Karaoke atmosphere ?
Suggestions for more singalong/crowd pleasing PARTY  songs ?

I think it's a great idea, you want to do what you can to keep the 'up-tempo' theme of the night going.  A lot of people I know that don't like karaoke, don't like it for this reason.  They've only been to the places where it is ballad after ballad and horrible singers.  When the actually go to a descent karaoke show, that has a good selection of songs, has good sounding equipment, has a good host, actively participate in the show.....their moods totally change.  Good luck to you...MrD

Reading your dilema I hope the comic thing works out and then disappears from your Karaoke Night.

Since you're thinking about the idea - What I plan to do is create a "playlist" before hand hopefully mixxing the right songs together both REG and Karaoke !!!  
I'm hoping to prepare so the night goes smoothllllllly.  I'll save the slow ballads for
right after 12:00 when everyone is drunk and feeling the LOVE if you know what I mean.

Some other songs I thougt of that I sang for Halloween are some tunes from the BLUES Brothers they are usually crowd pleasers.

After reading your idea I was thinking of having the regulars do the sing-a long songs. My dilema with that is how do I do it without going out of rotation? Maybe I'll ask all that are interested to put their names in a hat and who ever gets picked sings a song from the list. What do ya think?

most of our "sing along songs" are actually songs where the audience responds to a line in the song  IE-"You don't have to call me darlin'" (crowd responds "bi..tch, sl...ut, who...re)  hey they're rednecks!      
or in "Mony Mony" where the crowd responds "hey, hey you get laid....etc."
the true sing along songs we have a are the local artists.  The folks from Texas can attest to Robert Earl Keen songs and the like!

babs , broken rotation is not the end of the world. especialy on nye , for these reasons you can make the exception. trust me, the karaoke gods will NOT strike you dead for breaking rotation!!  I always gaurntee that I will KEEP IT FAIR, but not keep perfect rotation. I almost NEVER get a complaint.

No I just say the alternative words over the mic to get the crowd to join in. They always yell back the swear words from the crowd. Sometimes they don't even notice I'm not saying the same thing. It's an old trick I learned from doing weddings.

You could do the whole night as kamikazee karaoke.  You pick all the songs before hand and when they come up for their song they draw the song from a hat and they sing.  You can still keep with the rotation and they still get to sing.

Ohhh...don't think that's a good idea for the WHOLE night...even though it's not a "regular" night, people are going to want to sing what they want to sing.  Throwing in the occasional "kamikaze round" or sing along into the mix is great, but if I knew I couldn't sing even one song I wanted all night, I'd find somewhere else to be.

Completely agree here.  NYE is generally one of the busiest karaoke nights of the year, if I were at a show I wouldn't want a turn wasted on a song I didn't know.  Our shows generally avg 1 MAYBE 2 songs if you are there from start to finish - my busiest NYE I had 75 singers just about 1 round & a handful of the second.

Ok Lonman, you need to send some of your singers north this NYE! I have taken on a NYE gig at a place that has had historically poor karaoke since they started doing it...They have cycled through maybe 4-5 companies. I went in to sing, expressed disdain, he asked me for my marketing stuff, and now he has put me on the spot. He wants me to do NYE. I agreed...now am kind of feeling like I've bitten off more than I can chew. I know he's probably done it to keep from firing the guy he has there now before he jumps in and hires me...he's done THAT before, obviously...but he hasn't done any advertising, and the place is tiny...in a very small town. So I'm calling in all my markers. Sadly, most people are already scheduled to do something else for NYE as I don't usually take on shows that night.

Kind of a big night entertainment-wise for me to be proving myself when I don't expect we'll have much going on (thus not bringing about the extra $$$ I usually bring in)...but I guess if it means I'll get a regular gig out of it...he understands the short notice, and I will give him my lecture of what a previous reputation for having passable to really bad karaoke does for a place.

SOOOO...send 'em north. Heck, I'll charter a bus for them!

Oooo Karen that's rough. It's time to call friends and family for back up. I agree NYE would be a tough night to start out on if the bar doesn't already have a following. Maybe since it's a small town you can simply put flyers in store windows. If you can get the buzz going around town you're something special they'll come. Small towns love gossip.  Karen I know here she is a FAMOUS singer that now does karaoke.  :D

Yup, Babs - when things get tough, it's time to "put on the big girl panties" and get to it.

I'm doing NYE at my regular place too.  I've been advertising it as Karaoke and Dancing.  That way I can mix is up as the crowd dictates.  Whenever  I run one of these one-off shows, I always let people know it's not a regular karaoke night and we're 'flying by the seat of our pants".  

My view is karaoke nights are for karaoke singers, pool tournament nights are for pool players, and karaoke and dancing nights are for whatever the cat drags in.

AMEN...Hey Croakdog, where are you on Wednesday nights again? Might drop by this week.
