Many years ago I was very happy with a  Studiomaster sessionmix 8.
Very dated now. I have tried a mackie DFX12. It has all the features I want but not enough headroom. I cant turn it up enough. Bit dissapointed with the EQ.
I am using a Beyer 88 and a Sure 87A with mackie 450's.
I recently bought a mackie 1402vlz pro but it was faulty.
Should I get another mackie or go for a SOUNDCRAFT Spirit M8.
Or another. Cant afford Allen & Heath. Possibly an Onyx...
I've been out of it so long I dont know which way to go.
Help please.

May consider a Mackie CFX12.  I've been running one 7 nights for 6 years & never had a problem.  Replaced a Soundcraft Spirit Folio 4 board wit it & the difference in sound was very noticeable.  You may have just got a bad board on the 1402, it happens with any brand.  I don't think an Onyx board would be necessary IMO.  Good board but designed more for recording.  Yamaha makes some good options as well.

The desk is faulty. Think I will get another 1402. I dont need the FX since getting a Lexicon. I could do with knowing how it compares to the M8 though.

I recently bought a Peavey fx16.

I could NOT be happier!.... Tried many different ones before this

it comes with 5 Year warranty by folks you can actually talk to on the phone and they treat you like you are a real person.

I too had a Lex200 effects unit, but gave it away once I got the Peavey mixer.....I simply didn't need it in the chain....The Peavey unit sounded just as good as the Lex and is easier to operate.

Audition it

Interesting. I was always impressed with the peaveys warm sounding spring reverb.
Infact I have had 2 peavey systems in the past. Like them.
I would however like to hear from anyone who has used both the mackie vlz pro and the soundcraft M series.
Yes, I will get to hear that peavey desk.
