I spend a rather large chunk of time listening to and commenting on songs. Many singers don't even say thank you to let me know they took the time to read what i said. Is this bad manners? I always reply to every comment I'm given even if briefly- and 9 time out of 10 I will go give the commenters song a listen then comment on it. I sincerely appreciate anyone who takes the time to write to me because I know how much time I spend. But yesterday and the day before- I literally spent 8 hours each day listening and commenting and about only 30% have responded. Makes me feel like I wasted my time. What is the ettiquette regarding this? I'm wondering what the rest of you think about it.

Currently I always reply to comments too, even though it may take me awhile sometimes to get back to people. I like to do this, but it does take a lot of time. IMO though, and likely those of others...it is more important that you go and comment on their songs rather than comment on their comments. Obviously doing both is better, but if you are short on time people usually at least appreciate that you are checking out and commenting on their songs which is what they probably really want anyway.
I wish the site was a lot faster and then these comments would be a lot easier to accomplish. 8 hours is way to much time for me to spend realistically. I could be trading / learning the stock market with that online time and it is likely time better spent - so we have to keep things in perspective.

JOhhny....na nee nanny boo boo- ya just did ( comment that is)
And bill...I'm, not talking about philosophical rampages on theory..I'm saying just a simple "thank you" or even "TY" would do just to let me know they read it.
And No I don't spend 8 hours daily- I have been gone for several weeks and had some catching up to do so that was an abnormal thing...

seriously.....even a simple "thankyou" to show your comment was read is least one could do. Sometimes people are overwelmed with the number of comments, and firgure if they can't get to them all, they won't answer any....also, thinking of something different to say to each one can be a trick....or treat....sorry....couldn't help it, I know it's over......I haven't always been too good at it either....there are some people who don't listen to others, and some that expect you to listen 10 to 1 .....you to theirs/their listen to your..... ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) ....some people are great at listening to others, and rarely sub their own......Paula.....you have a legitimate beeeyatch...........please do not correct my spelling again...... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif)

In regards to johnnys comment...(very sarcastic) What TERRIBLE burden- to be given so many compliments that you can't reply to all of them...a Fate worse then death don't you agree?
NOT!
I was brought up in the south- and when someone does something for you you thank them...when compliment is given you DEFINITELY have to acknowledge that! I never heard of anything so rude in my life - by god if I can spend 5 minutes listening to their song then another 5 composing a comment that manages to be honest, helpful and still positive- all in 100 letters or less
a little "TY" is NOt too much to ask. I'm almost to the mind set that if you can't have the time to reply even minimally to your comments- then no one should have the time to listen to them either. Maybe I'm PMSing...of maybe I'm just a beyotch...but there tis!

Paula,
To me it's just another indication that Showcase (the general mood) isn't for the more serious-minded singer or person who takes things too seriously. It's also another reason why I by-pass showcase completely and will just sub in an area where people are more mature, and things are more sincere, I'm not here for Karaoke, I'm here for Singers, and SIngers showcase doesn't cater to serious-minded individuals who wish for "down to earth" real interaction and any semblance of an educational climate.. Of course sincere people exist in the showcase, but the general mood undermines what I wish out've an environment I'm a part of. This isn't "Karaoke" to me, it's learning to sing..similarly for the more serious singer, there's potential for great anguish in the showcase IMHO assuming you are searching for others that share your intensity in music and musicianship as an artform. Showcase to me IS not a place that many serious-minded individuals who want to keep it real should be participating in with ANY expectation ! To submit without expectation, sure.. To expect your degree of musicianship and etiquette to be shared isn't reasonable within the showcase.. IF you sub, have NO expectation !

I definitely think it is bad form to not acknowledge a comment. Someone took the the time to listen to your work, AND to let you know they enjoyed it. I actually feel a little guilty when I can think of nothing more to say than "Thank you" to a comment.

Technically one should reply to a given comment out of common courtesy. BUT realistically, nobody should expect or demand something on SS. There are several valid reasons why somebody may be negligent in returning or giving a comment. A person shouldn't sub a song or give a comment then expect something in return. There's no reason for hard feelings to develope due to a lack of acknowledgment on a song. IMO

Hi Paula. ![wave ](./images/smilies/emot-wave.gif) Your concern isn't unusual really. It IS common courtesy to reply to a comment given...no matter who it's from.
I worried so much about being late replying to comments, I went to Listen Only.
I think I've missed a whole week here so far, but my life's been a biatch lately for sure......since the last holiday.
Even being late though, I ALWAYS appreciate others taking the time to ENDURE a listen of me. ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) I've NEVER not returned a Thank You.
I do think it's RUDE not to!
When you sub a song here in SS under "JFF" or the dreaded "C", you ARE expecting a response! And when listeners respond, which is usually in a friendly way, not replying to them is WITHOUT etiquette!
I'm with ya all the way on this! I mean hey....what would your mama think? That statement doesn't really apply to me though....I'm self-taught in the "Ways Of The World". It's called character development.
Which now, my bad conscience is probably screaming....GET SOME BALLS MAN!!
Funny though....I have balls for standing up for what I believe....right?
Just don't waste your time on the ME ME ME takers. It only takes about 8 hours of my time to figure out who I don't listen to any longer. ![2 cents :2cents:](./images/smilies/twocents.sml.gif) LOL

YES,
If you want to make a statement; reply to all comments except the one you want to ignore. That is a very strong statement.
edit:
ps: this thread is in the wrong place and should be in the Singer's Forum.... moved

I think it's terrible manners not to reply to comments made. It doesn't bother me at all if it takes some people a few days to reply but there ought to be, at some point, some sort of acknowledgment made because of the time it took for someone to listen and comment. You always give thoughtful comments, Paula. I just want you to know that I appreciate you very much.

Do you notice what those of us contributing to this thread have in common ? We are ALL more serious about our singing (as *SINGING* knowing it's an artform) than "just casual Karaoke". I think as SOON as those of us that have respect for SINGING as a respectable artform find a place where we can assemble and interact maturely respecting the art, and those that share a common interest in it, we'll be happier.. Just so happens that must in this thread ALSO have gotten involved in the more interactive aspects of singing such as critiquing.. To expect etiquette in a venue such as showcase given the numbers (and now that Jian has moved this to singers forum) EVEN the subtle dislike shown regarding the more serious "intense" musicians those of us that take interactive singing to OUR level are not going to get our expectations met in Singers Showcase. It's been stated in essence "Leave us alone, this is JUST Karaoke, go someplace else singers/musicians, or take lessons in real"
You think we're going to get respect in a venue where many don't even wish to see us interacting cordially in ? You expect Showcase to be mature ? People bicker about not maintaining their perfect "10" rank. Honestly, none of us that take this seriously are going to give showcase a face-lift.. It's NOT a mature down to earth place... We need to either form one, find one, or just have no expectations across the board, none of us will train showcase. That would take heavier handed moderation, and no mod is going to say "Did you say thank you to those commenting?"..

Yes but the board sometimes is flakey and doesn't show "New" sometimes. I have seen it twice since I have been here.
But I know that the person who subbed the song may have many reasons and so I don't hold it against them.
Most of the replies read the comments and even though you might not get verbal recognition from the subee, I am sure the other commenters have taken it into account who replied so your effort does not go unnoticed.

I see a little of both sides of this. When I first submitted songs to Singers Showcase, I didn't understand how everything worked. It took me a while to figure out people looked for a response to their comments. When I realized it was good etiquette to respond I tried to go back and respond to as many people as I could. When I would listen to songs and leave a comment I never thought to go look to see if the singer responded. Give a little slack to the newer people is all I'm saying.
Do I understand now it is important to respond - yes. But that is because I've learned people are looking for it.
Here's a question for you -
I haven't submitted a song in a very long time, but still have songs listed in Singers Showcase. Should I still check to see if people are leaving comments? and respond?
