Well the perfect mate would obvioulsy be the Mackie SWA1801z. But almost any of the powered subs on the market would mate well as long as you were able to cross them over properly, you don't want your mains trying to reproduce the frequencies the sub is now trying to reproduce.
You typically want the subs power to be higher than your mains, since your 450's push 400 watts, your sub should push voer that, double is a good rule of thumb.

Well nothing i'd really recommend in that $$ range. Just about the only one IN that range would be the JBL JRX118SP. I take it you are looking for a powered sub (just assumed since you had powered tops). It's a decent little sub & would help in the bottom end, 300 watts, less than i'd personally like to mate with the 450's, but have heard them with the JBL EON15 (the 180 watt model not the 400 watt G2 series) & sounded great together. If you want to up the budget a bit more then go for the JBL PRX518S with 500 watt Crown amp. But the first one should make a pretty good difference!

Would something such as a B-52 ACT-18X Active 18" 1200W Subwoofer work?

I also run Mackie SRM-450's and am looking at adding a powered sub as well and as I value the opinions of many here and especially Lonman, I ask about the above and if anyone has exp with one of these.

Actually yes that would work very well & actually would be better than the JBL JRX118 for about the same price as the power handling is right in the ballpark at 800 watts & it also is capable of adding a second passive sub to drop it's internal amp down to 4 ohms for 1200 watts total. B-52 makes a very decent speaker for the price.
