Just realized I'm flat broke and won't be able to hookup a laptop KJ setup like I hoped just yet.  I was hoping to get lots of songs from buykaraokedownloads but I guess I'll just order a few more custom CD-G mix cd's so I can guarantee I'll have them in time.

Any advice on the cheapest way to go?  I got three Sunfly mixes at MyCDG.com that were only $20 each with free shipping that I'm pretty excited about.  I haven't really seen much that's that inexpensive, other than buykaraokedownloads (which is only 33 cents cheaper than what I just got actually).  I've seen a few other sites but they seem to be more and shipping from overseas killed the savings I'd get because I get to live in sunny California.

Any advice is much appreciated.

I get a bunch from tricerasoft's site.

Buy the 100 song packages and the price goes down to $1 a song for all of the manus they have, including about half of Zoom's catalogue. Unfortunately I only got as far as "G" on the first 200 songs I bought from them....

That means they probably will eventually get at least another $500 from me.

http://www.tricerasoft.com/karaoke_songs/songs.html

The Mycdg is also a good deal for the sunfly songs ($20). I have bought 6 of their disks and am quite happy with the result. Unfortunately they appear to only have a partial selection of the sunfly songs made.

Unfortunately many of the manus don't do discount burns. I have yet to see soundchoice going for less than about $4 or $5 a song. Even though I have about half my songs from soundchoice, I have not bitten the bullet and bought any custom cds yet from them, mainly because If they have a song I want I generally buy the disk at those prices for the burns. I may need to for a few out of print disks though. My plan has been to base my songlist on soundchoice and fill in gaps by buying burns from other manus. If you try to just buy cds from all of the manus you will end up with lots of duplicates, but even so it is often cheaper that way per song than going the custom burn route.

On the other hand there seems to be a few places that are certainly illegal that charge unreasonably low rates. They seem to fly by night and are gone within a few months of them opening. As for them you are not only pirateing you are giving money to a slimeball crook. MyCDG and Tricerasoft appear legit.

The biggest problem with legit karaoke is the cost of obtaining songs. Often the best route is to buy the big multi song packages such as "Supercore" and even if you only want 10% of the songs the prices are still competitive. Even SGB has about 10-20% good songs. At the going prices they are cheaper than going to custom cds.

Now you may want to not have some of the other songs from a pack on your book, but hey you can always not list a few of them. I thought about it, but eventually decided to list everything I actually own.

THe best thing to do is to talk to your singers and find what they want to sing. Spending money on a song that will never get sung is sad but necessary. At 1 night a week you will probably have less than 2500 songs sung in a year, and it would be expected that after duplicates are counted only 800 or so unique songs are sung. I bought a cd for $65 from SBI for 14 songs, but a lot of them were requests or hard to find "good" songs. I probably was as good or better a buy for me than the supercore set of 350 or so songs.

If you are into indie rock, you are probably best to pay close attention to the British manus, SBI, Zoom and Sunfly.

Thanks, much for the advice!  Unfortunately, since I don't have a laptop to play mp3+g's on, I still can't use TriceraSoft or BuykaraokeDownloads.  Unless I was able to download them and burn discs on a friend's computer.  Hmph.  Any ideas to get around this temporary situation?

I lucked out and found someone on Craigslist selling Sound Choice's Foundation set (70 cd's) used for just $70.  VERY lucky!  That gives me a good base of karaoke classics but since I'm mostly trying to get indier stuff, custom cd's is really the only way to go for me.  I agree with you on Sunfly and I bought one of Zoom's Smiths cd-g on Ebay.  There's still a few well-known bands I'd like to get a bunch of songs of, like Beatles, Stones, Prince, etc so I might get some of those discs on Ebay at some point.

I know what you mean about Sunfly not having their whole catalog up (yet, i hope!).  Those "Most Wanted" cd's have TONS of songs I'd love to have.

Hopefully they are original discs and not illegal burns.  THat's a pretty cheap price for the Foundation - even used.  70 cd's?  The Foundation only consists of 30 discs, were they selling maybe both Foundation sets or maybe some of the Bricks as well?

Yep, they were originals and had the Brick additions, all in the original binder.  3 discs missing and reeked of smoke but what a bargain!  He'd tried selling them for $100 apparently and no one was buying!  There's been a guy trying to sell $6000 worth of discs for $1500 for awhile on San Diego's Craigslist if anyone wants to inquire. Once I got the discs into another holder and inputted the songlists and threw out the printouts he had, I could breathe again.....then San Diego caught on fire.  Weird guy (shock) who sold them to me.  I didn't know you needed a special cd-g player so I thought I'd been had when I played the disc on my dvd player after he'd left and no lyrics/graphics came on.  Called the guy and he said he didn't know if they had graphics because he'd barely used them and just sang along with the discs in his car.  Luckily, I took one to a friend's karaoke night and breathed a sigh of relief when the graphics came on.
