Tonight my wife and I went to the karaoke steak night at the American Legion.  We had a very nice time. People have been telling me we should go there for the last two years.  Since it is a private club I was some what afraid of  feeling out of place but that was not the case.

First the food was excellent. Second two other couples welcomed us to share their table (it was crowded). Then when the music started wow. I could not believe all the great singers and great song selections. The crowd and the singers were pretty much our age (50s) or older and the music was country with a little 50 & 60 pop/rock. The sound system was great too with all the music on CDs or Laser disc, no computer.

I did  George Strait's “I Cross My Heart” from my disc. The only problem was that there were so many singers that I only got to sing once. After we had been there 2 1/2 hours I asked the kj about the rotation and he said he still had several to go on the first rotation that he really had too many singers. So we left.  Had a good time and plan to go back even for one song. Just thought I would share.

A lot people dont know that VFW & the Legion are "open" clubs. Generally the drinks are cheaper and the crowds are more polite. I did our VFW for 3 or 4 years. Its hard to get young singers in and the oldtimers sing mostly the same stuff

If there is a wedding reception in the big hall it can get wild. One advantage in doing them one can book parties either in the bar or hall.

I do about 3 gigs a year at one of the American Legion posts here in Portland. One of them is during The Rose Festival and they truck in Sailors from the Naval Ships in port for the week and they feed them and give them free booze! They invite plenty of single ladies and it's quite a party. Last year we had 140 Sailors and this year we had over 200.

I agree that it is usually friendly folks, good food, and cheap drinks. $1.75 well drinks all day long!

I joined the SAL (Sons of The American Legion) 2 years ago. I pay like $25 a year.

We get several Canadian ships and they are party animals.

Sounds familiar We karaoked with Russians Itailians and others all over the world b4 they had karaoke. I would love to come to that party..

It's (the entertainment for Sailors) a one day affair. 2pm-Till Midnight at the American Legion.

The Rose Festival lasts for about 10 days. The fleet is in port for 4 days of it.

One year I was KJ'ing at the Grand on 4th and had a bunch of sailors come in(just across the river from the fleet) and they were some karaoke monsters. Dindnt hurt that Im a retired Chief---but got a good pic of me with them singing and its up on the wall of shame in the foyer.

I've done my local American Legion a few times, but it's not one of my favorites.  I go there because they start early which fits into my schedule.  They have a core of regulars there who sing every week.  Nice enough people, but most of the music is country which I don't particularly care for and the type of songs I like to sing (rock and pop), the crowd doesn't seem to like.  It's a little bit too sedate for me, which is saying a lot because I don't like it to be rowdy at all.  Frankly, the place is just boring.

I've also been to a different American Legion nearby.  Completely different atmosphere there.  More variation in the type of music, and the crowd was into every performance.  Some danced.  Unfortunately the place was so full of cigarette smoke I couldn't stand to be in there longer than it took to sing one song.  This was about two years ago.  Since then they enacted a smoking ban, which killed their crowd and now I don't think they even have karaoke anymore.

Story of my life. I got totally burned out doing the VFW Didnt even host for about 6 months. I was at the vet clinic talking to a guy from a post in a nearby town He said they are starting to recruit some new young members from Iraq etc The main reason the posts went "open" was to generate some business to keep the club open period. Its hard to keep the post atmosphere out of the club and get young people in.

I do encourage the young people here to go to the posts and sing something besides country I guarantee you will be welcomed.
