How about an opposite take from a show I went to last night.

The show was a "David Bowie" show with a mix of David Bowie Movies, Music Videos and David Bowie (only) Karaoke for a 4 hour period.

The guy managed to pull it off with only a karaoke library of 9 songs.

8 of the 9 songs got sung in the night, and with the advertiszed theme, they all went over well with the audience.

Sure ideally one can with a little effort get 20 or more different Bowie songs to do such a show, but hey the goal is for the people to have a good time. This guy managed to pull it off even with an insufficient songlist specialized to a single artist.

so ...ALL bowie  ALL night...darn shame i had to miss that...

I know a guy who did a demo on that unlimited download site...he said he couldnt find a decent track...any. alot of midi files that sound like a 4 year old on a siynth. I had a disk I got from a friend with like 3000 songs like that. it was good enough for practice playing it in my living room before I started hosting, but I wouldnt ever let anyone hear them in public.

   he didn't join

This is one reason I am switching to Compuhost when I set up my next laptop for karaoke. It has the ability to save song counts, and to save singer's songs for use on subsequent nights.

I am a programmer, and I tried to open up a dialog with MTU about writing Perl tools to work with their stuff. For example, I wrote a tool which allows you to create a spreadsheet from the KMA files, and then edit the titles in the spreadsheet and batch update all of the KMA files. I tried to get them to tell me the format of their .lst files so that I could write a tool to create them based on as web form (for a user-input kiosk), but they didn't respond. Basically, I was offering to write tools to make their stuff better and they were not at all receptive. That is their right, but the lack of progress on their software is clear to me. To a programmer, the way their user interface is all over the map makes it obvious that they don't have a software library they are building on, they just stitch together new pieces of code every time.

The completeness of Compuhost is outstanding compared to Hoster. I like the basic screen in Hoster a lot, and I like their key changer and sound. But Compuhost sounds good too, and it has so much more than Hoster. I believe they will very soon have a web-based kiosk capability, and if I start using their stuff I suspect they might be receptive to working with me to create web-based tools that allow hosts to have singers search and input songs prior to arriving for the show.

By the look and feel of them Compuhost and MTU are team written.  As you know the problem with that is that the only one who ends up knowing how the stupid thing actually works is the project manager and he/she doesn't understand all the coding.
Why don't you use one of the independently written hosters?  At least you can talk to those guys.

This internet kiosk idea sounds like a good one.  Could you expand on that a little?

I did in that post. Basically, I have already done this. The idea is to allow people to input songs prior to coming to the show, i.e. put in slips from outside the venue. It would allow you to produce the play list externally, then input it directly into your hosting program.

Actually, I am now looking at something that would interface with PowerKaraoke SIglos player, which I bought. From the activity of the powerkaraoke folks here, they might be willing to work and play well with others. 8-)

Many companies have a well laid out business plan that they follow intensely and do not deviate from it unless they are forced to by changes in the market, competition, etc.

It's possible that some of these companies did not respond to your idea yet as it is not in their immediate plans and or budget to do so. Companies like MTU or Tricerasoft or Compuhost have annual budgets for these improvements, sometimes those changes proposed by outside sources or end users are not in the cards for the near future.

I bet it is a real hat trick trying to remain profitable in the software development field and I take my hat off to folks who can balance both major improvements to their product and at the same time make enough to keep the doors open.

In any event, there will always be a better mousetrap or it may seem that way on the surface. While some offer products that are feature rich they may not be able to offer proper support be it phone or online. Some offer less features but offer plenty of support. Again it is all based upon what the mission and goals are of the company that develops the program.

I have been looking at CompUHost lately as it has some neat features but I'm unsure of their customer support. I currently use MTU and know that I can get my problems or questions supported. They all have their pluses and minuses, wading through them can be tough as everyone has different needs.

They do have some pretty cool features, I like the idea of being able to send a graphic - ie Happy Birthday, Anniversary, Star Is Born, etc..to the singer/audience screen.  Also being able to have a history of what was sung each night.  I do prefer the kma format over standard mp3 based systems which the sound quality is important to me.

I run a screensaver on the second output that I sell ads on and still have room for birthdays messages and such..

Not a valid argument. KMA is actually based on the "WMA" file format, preset and NOT configurable at 192 bitrate. CompuHost fully supports the "WMA+G" format, except you can designate a much higher bitrate, all the way up to 320, actually resulting in a BETTER audio quality than KMA. The only reason MTU created the KMA format is to keep users bound to Hoster, without the ability to move to other hosting products. I see that they have recently introduced a file format converter, probably as a result of user pressure, however for MTU users that have ripped an extensive library to KMA, this may still be an exhausting task.

I prefer the kma since they in my opinion sound better without having to rip at 320, yes those would sound better, but I don't feel like having a file double to triple the size of what I got that sounds good at where it's ripped - yes yes hard drives are cheap now days, but I do have a limited budget & can't afford an extra drive to hold all the songs that are currently being held on a smaller drive.  They are also 1 file over having to have 2 separate files, named the same, or having to go through zipping each song into 1 or whatever.
Doesn't matter anyway I downloaded the Compuhost demo to check it out & it's cdg ripper doesn't recognize any of my drives as cdg compatible, Audiograbber & Tricerasoft CDG ripper don't either & if I have to use a couple different programs to make 1 program work loses the major point of ease of use to me.  Hoster is doing exactly what I need it to do, nothing more nothing less & it recognizes all of my drives to be able to read cdg without having to get any special converters.

Just so you know as well Lonman, it IS possible to change the BookID's on MTU's hoster... either 1 at a time or renumber your entire collection. AND it is possible to split the all KMA's to cdg+wma at one time.  --FREE.
