Can a singer ever really sing as well in the pop genre sitting down ?  Or is singing seated somewhat problematic ?  I know it's done but given a choice isn't it always better to sing standing up ?

I responded to this in the Critique thread, but...well, it's phrased differently here...

No, it is not impossible to sing well sitting down in the pop genre - or any genre for that matter.  However, look at the songs which are sung while seated - usually ballads that are fairly light and "easy."  You will pretty much never see a high energy, uptempo, belted piece sung sitting down.

When you are seated, you tend to be more relaxed and less "active" in what you are doing.  Being seated will usually not align your body properly and will have your diaphragm partially collapsed.  You can align yourself properly while seated and have little problem with getting air and utilizing it optimally, but it takes more work and you do (at least I do) need to think more about what you are doing physically than you would if you were standing.

This is really great advice OperaKitty.  I think it'd be good if you or some other skilled, trained singer started a thread that featured known tips for good singing technique.  We could all learn a lot!

I agree Kitty, you get full support for your diaphragm and therefore better control when you're standing (not to mention better sound)

Slow songs can be sang but you still need a tall stool and keep your back straight. With new songs I have trouble keeping the beat without moving around.

The number one mistake most karaoke singers make is they are glued in one spot like they are trying to hide behind the graphics monitor. Even after singing a song several times they still stare at the tv and never make eye contact with the crowd.

Walk around and find the spot on stage where you can hear the system to your liking. Glance at the words and scan the audience If there is somebody smiling and enjoying it turn and face them directly for a minute and sing to them Same with a photographer. Acknowledge them.  Anytime the audience shows approval acknowledge them if nothing but a smile.  

Does this improve singing? YES When you are having fun let go and relax and your natural talents come out. Even the worst of singers can have 2 or 3 songs and have fun and work the crowd and the crowd goes nuts.

When you learn how to do this and find your style, limits and strengths then start working on the basics and mechanics.

Well.. I know for a fact that Gilly usually does her singing either sitting down or laying on her stomach.  :shock: And she still manages to sound better than most of us.

So yeah, it CAN be done, but then she might be able to even surpass herself if she were 'standing' to sing. You don't know how I've tried to get that gal to go pro.

I think MOST of the POP music today could be sung sitting down WITH a sore throat...When I look at Jessica Simpson, britney Spears, Shakira, Fergie, Ciara, Nelly Furtado, Aaliyah, Ashanti, Gwen Stehani, Norah Jones, Diana Krall, The pussycat dolls...and I won't even get started with the "boys" or the rappers that can't sing. These people don't have talent...they have MARKETING! Sure I like some of them- especially Gwen Stephani, and Diana Krall...but would I consider them "singers" Nope! Not by a long shot!

I think the question better asked Kappy is "can you sing difficult music sitting down" the answer is yes- but only with good posture to allow you to maximize your lung capacity. I wouldn't take on a Jennifer Holliday, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera or Anastacia song sitting down- EVER. I also think most beginning or amateur singers should stand up just because it makes it easier to have the correct posture without having to think about it.

But IMO the answer to your question also leads to the obvious fact that "most" pop music isn't that hard. So yeah- you should be able to sing it sitting down, laying down, heck- hanging upside down. But that's a whole different thread about how good music is going to hell in a handbasket. America is being suckered into buying alot of ....um......."excrement"  :whistle: I would love a world where you COULDN'T sing so many of the top songs on the charts without having proper support. Good thread topic though!

I don't have experience singing...but have a bunch listening....

Don't look now guys...but the dumbed down masses today don't buy talent anymore....that went the way of the doh doh in the 70's.

Today.... kids buy persona....sad but true....

actually I think "persona"equals "skin". I think it's sad that someone as talented as Christina Aquilera feels like she has to be as hoochie as a no talent like Britney Spears.  :whistle: Britney NEEDs the distraction from how BAD she actually is..Christina takes away from her talent by acting that way.
