So pleases help in the simplest of terms possible

OK Im fed up !! I record live from my set up (laptop mixer & speakers ) right to Audacity...Im finding that my ear is getting better at hearing a big difference between a live & a pc mixed recording & I WANT IT !! I think my want to is getting over run by my know how to !!
 
I want to start muti tracking & dont have a clue...that seems to be the general jest of things in my life these days !!

I bought a m audio for recording from my laptop (where all my karaoke songs are)  to my home pc (onto audacity)(for now,.. if I can ever learn IT I will prolly upgrade to Adobe Audition or something like that but danged if I cant understand how to do this !! )  ... I like to think of my hubby as  "the pc man" but hes lost too... Can you tell me how to set this up ?? I am not using a condenser mic just a SM58 so I didn't need the m audio fast track pro so I just got the m audio fast track.

Heres how we have it set up now...instead of using  the laptop sound card we use the maudio fast track...we also bought another one to record myself singing onto the home pc. Why? cause some stupid ( maybe) salesmen told me this is what I needed to do.
Im lost ! Plz help !

First, I would like to say that the hair really works for me too.  But that aside, don't use a computer to record.  You need the right tool for the job not just a tool, the right tool.  In this case that would be a hard disk recorder.

Thanks about the hair  :hug:  but isnt recording with a hard disc recorder the same as live ?? Id prolly be able to sell all this stuff Ive bought for pc recording & be able to buy a hard disc recorder actually. Nah prolly not that much but alot anyways...

Sorry Kieth, I couldn't help but admire.  The only thing on my head is glare.

But no, a hard disk recorder is an editable multi-track enviroment specifically made to be a studio in a box.  They are a lot easier to use, faster and far less likely to crash than a computer.  If you get one with analog outs you could use it as an extra mixer.  Last time I checked, Tascam 8-tracks started at around $300.00.  Might be worth checking out.

Thank you ...both of you I was looking at one at Guitar Center but really didnt look that hard b/c the price wasnt kool with me but Im honestly starting to  think hard about it now. I dunno Im just bored lately I quit smoking & now I wanna get tangled in "projects" but all of them seem to be falling thru for some reason...I'll find one that I can tackle on of these days...

Nice little 8 track machine.  These usually will only record 2 tracks at a time so you'd want to lay your music down first (yes you may need to print lyric sheets), then you playback music while recording your vocals.  Nice thing is you can record multiple vocal tracks & pick & choose the one that sounds best or better yet, if you have a good section of a song on one track & a good section of a song on another track, you can use those 2 sections.  Or if you like MOST of your vocals but maybe messed up a couple of spots, you can just 'punch in' at the bad spot, re-record that spot only & be done without having to re-record the entire song again & again.

A little harder to work with but once you learn it, it still sounds decent.

There's no need to fear the unknown. Yes a stand alone hard disk recorder is probably easier to learn and use, but apparently you have already invested some into computer recording. I have no idea what you have or what it is exactly you are trying to do so I can't be real specific. Recording on your computer has a higher learning curve but once mastered you can do some pretty interesting things and can achieve professional results. It is possible depending on your goals and future plans that it may be time to cut your loses and switch to a hard disk recorder, all I will say about that is that computers are the future of all recording so it just depends on when you want to get started into the future. If I can be of any help getting you started give me a shout. I promise not to comment on your hair as I still have my own, well most of it anyway .

that machine is the younger cousin of my br1100CD recorder station...

I love it, and don't use it at ALL for what it's originally intended... one track at a time, and then playing that while you record the next track...

Studio session... BIG time. Although I'm trying to find some local musicians to make some songs... so we'll be using it then! !
