Or something to that effect? I'm not talking about the internet. I'm talking about in person. If you have been told you couldn't sing how did it effect you?

At first I was afraid, I was petried !
Took all the strength I had not to fall apart. Tryin hard to mend the
pieces of my broken heart and I spent so many nights feeling sorry
for myself, I used to cry, but now I hold my head up high !

I don't think anyone's ever said anything like that to me, but I'm sure people have thought it. And sometimes they've been right. Luckily karaoke people are a polite lot.

My girlfriend is my biggest critic. She let's me know when I either need to give more heart to a song or that it is not in my range. I like this; when she gives me a compliment it really means something.
However, most tell me I sing well. I have seen people say someone can't sing, generally, when they "perform" a song that is the listener's favorite. Besides, if the person telling you you can't sing is in a karaoke setting, they should not be there. It is all in fun. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

when i was inn grammar school we had a production of "That's Entertainment". the teacher had us all singing and such when she heard someone whom she thought was really good. she walked over to my area and listened intently as we sang our hearts out. she stopped us and asked, "who is that that is singing so good?" or something to that effect. i told her it was me and she dismissed it with a "No, it's not you. I think it's (name withheld to protect the innocent)" (i remember the name, because he was a friend of mine, but i won't tell it here).
anyway, she gave him a solo part.
Me?
she thought so much of my singing that she made me the MC!
now i get paid to sing every weekend. god i wish i could remember that teacher's name so i could send her a cd! i've never wanted to rub someone's nose in it so much!

That's all right Kappy you will survive. Disco Lives!
But back to the topic: Yes, but only once. It was my mother who is probably the most honest person in the world. And the conversation went like this....
"What do you think?" says I.
"You sound like Hoagy Carmickle...."
"Did you like Hoagy Cramickle?"
"No...."

![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) Exweed, I was hoping my post didn't go to waste
That being said, *I* have not only been told I can't sing, but those too polite to tell me have taken my microphone and stand away in band settings the minute my back is turned.. Or, assuming they feel even that's too blatant, somebody keeps accidently knocking my mic chord plug out've the amplifier jack. I have been told I can not sing. I KNOW I can not sing, I am used to the fact that I can't sing, and I hope one day I can sing.. What I have been told is that I am a damn good 4th harmony sometimes.. HAHAHAHA

![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif) Exweedfarmer - I know the feeling.
I'll be practicing a song at home before trying it at karaoke and my kids chime in with such nice comments like:
"You're not going to sing that at karaoke are you?"
"That's not how that goes"
"Is that a song" LMAO
Family are so honest. I have to say I don't let it bother me to much. I don't sing full out at home. I just need to get the jist of the song so I can do it.
Sometimes the 1st time you do a song at karaoke it isn't it's best. Who cares it's karaoke, right? and it doesn't mean you sing bad. You just need to get better at the song. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Well, I don't like people singing in my ear. If you want to sing along, fine, but don't do it right next to me, don't do it so loud I can't hear the song itself, and don't expect me to watch you and listen....now if I could figure out how to tell my wife that.

when I started out, I thought I was pretty good... until I recorded myself at the place I sang! HOLY He!! !!!
I almost quit singing altogether... until I worked with a friend and slowly got back into it. I know NOW when I tank a song, when I'm weak on some notes... so when I'm told "Dude, that was AWESOME", I can smile and say, well, it needs work!

I had the POWER shut off on me by the Bartender half-way thru a song once---becuase the tune had one F-bomb that I forgot to skip/change. It was like something out of the BLues Brothers movie scene where they cut the power to the stage. :O It was funny as hel tho! ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif)

People have and do tell me this all the time - but listen for yourself - they are correct!
I do it because it's fun - I'm not out trying to be a professional - although for some odd reason when doing community theater I'm fine... must be the acting performance part...

Yeah, I most certainly have. Most of the time though, it's by people that will not sing themselves. If it's not these type of fear ridden people, it will be the d*ckhead friends of mine that just can't let me do a song, without saying it. Trying to get a chuckle out of people, like they've never said anything before. Yet again, of course, they won't get up and sing either. I know I am not very good, I readily admit it.....however, I hear much, much, much worse everytime I do a show. I never say mean horrible things to the people that are real bad. I've heard some unreal voices, but they are out having a good time and trying.....and they are applauded for it! It's mostly the people that have low self esteem and can't sing themselves that will be the ones to poke fun or say this kind of stuff, mostly I think because they are jealous that you have the ballz to get up and do it and they don't!

Somebody telling me "I can't do something" is about as useless in terms of constructive comments as them telling me "You are so dang good"...
Point being, Telling me "I can't sing" doesn't make me feel good, but it also says nothing constructive such as
What I can do so I *MIGHT* be able to sing..
Criticism to me is ALL useful if it's accompanied by something constructive such as
"Why I can't sing".. That is helpful.. I already know I can't sing, I don't need others telling me this... If they tell me WHY, they are doing me a favor.
