I think there needs to be a  more then just a "disco" genre I think there should be a "funk" and either a "House" "club" or possibly even a "ambient " or "Trance" category

There should also be distinctions between R&B and classic R&B
and "Rock",  "classic rock"  and "Light rock"

and even "country" should have a "new" and a classic" sub genre

Can't remember is there a "Blues" category?

it would help newcomers locate songs they want to hear in the showcase.

Are there any other genres that should be added that anyone else can thing of? How do you get these suggestions to the "powers that be"?

This is the current genre choices:
General
80's
Comedy
Folks
Hip Hop
Metal
Show Tune
Non English
Oldies
Pop
R&B
Rock
Standard
Traditional
Seasonal
50's
TV Tune
Motown
European
Bluegrass
70's
Blues
Original.

23 categories to choose from. Maybe we need to relook at what we have before we add more. Some look like over laping ie 50's & Oldies are the same.

edit: there is a category for Country and that make it 24...... sorry

I agree- I think some of these genres should be looked at as there  may be potenitial overlaps (i.e. Oldies). Just my $.02 worth.

General ...can't remember anyone using this one
80's
Comedy
Folks
Hip Hop
Metal
Show Tune
Non English
Oldies ...................this one is basically the same as "standards"
Pop
R&B
Rock
Standard
Traditional
Seasonal
50's
TV Tune
Motown
European
Bluegrass
70's
Blues
Original.

Why don't we have a "60's" genre we have 50, 70, and 80...there should probably also be a "90's"
Yup we need a classic rock, a dance/house and a funk category too.

PLus I don't see "country" but I know it's there- there also need sot be a "classic country" because todays country is very different from classic standards.

Thats like saying frank sinatra( who was the top of the pop charts in 1940) still belongs there. I would not but Toby Keith and Shania Twain in the same category and Hank Williams.

Just me - but yeah...they could definitely stand to add some categories :dancin:

Perhaps......

Rather than Phil adding a shytload more options in a drop down box, he can just do away with the drop down and we can simply "type in" the genre we want each song under? Same way we do with the song title and original artist. I don't think too many people actually search out a specific genre anyhow, they skip pages or look up their favorite singers or just listen back on the ones who's comments they get. Besides, if we all typed in legitimate english (or, engrish, for Kappy) the search feature could still work. It works for searching for original artist and song titles.

Just a thought...

I just started a thread in the Mod Forum about this thread. Hopefully Phill will come around and see it.

I would reconstruct that whole list.  Many categories are multicategories and would
be easier for most if arranged as follows:

a cappella

Spiritual/Gospel/Liturgical

New Age/ Trance/ Techno

Classical/Opera

Easy Listening/Cocktail/Light Jazz/"Elevator"

Country/Traditional Country

Celtic/Traditional Ethnic

Country Rock

Delta/Dixieland/Traditional Blues Style

Soul/Funk

British Invasion/Classic 60's Rock

Classic Male/Female Folk Ballad Singers

Love Songs

Traditional Folk

Classic 60's/70's ballad Solo Artist

Classic Rock-Bands

Country Rock

Motown/Classic 60's & 70's R&B

TV Theme/Jingle/Movie

The 50's

Comedy/Parody

Metal/Heavy Metal/ Hard Rock

Hip Hop/Urban/ Rap

Seasonal/ Holiday

Porn

I like that idea...as long as someone monitors it so whatever someone types in makes sense. Like if someone typed in "boring" or "fun", the monitor could put them in the correct genre. But any suggestion that makes sense could stay.
