Someone on the SS subbed a song today and in the intro stated "it's kind of boring" Yes it was a ballad and I was prepared to yawn...but to my surprise- This person actually did a good job on the song. When I compared it in my mind to the original I would even go so far as to say the 2 versions were comparible.

Well that started me thinking. There are some songs that "I" personally think are nothing vocally and they BORE me when I sing them- yet - when I hear someone ELSE sing them- even with the same arrangement- I think it's beautiful. So my thought it this..there are some songs that are so simple that the singer feels no challenge in singing them and somehow easy morphs into "boring" in said singers mind... Where as the listener only hears a gorgeous song with a relaxed delivery. (I said as much to the person subbing and they agreed "That" was exactly what had happened to them with the sub in question.)

The artist that I feel this way about is Diana Krall and possibly Norah Jones. Hate to sing 'em- but LOVE to hear others do so. (In both cases I have ALL of their albums) This ever happened to any of you? I'd like to hear some opinions regarding what makes a song "interesting" vs what makes a song "boring" As a professional entertainer- I have to sing songs that sometimes are not "MY" preference. I'm trying to get some ideas that will help me set up some parameters when I am choosing a song to appeal to the masses rather than myself.
What makes a song a great song- when there is plain melody or lack of wonderful lyrics?
