Hello all.

I have a friend who's a KJ. He uses a laptop to play the karaoke songs. I asked him if he'd burn me a CD of some selected songs, so I can take that CD to a number of different karaoke places and I'd be able to sing those songs. I've gone to a couple other places where the KJ uses a karaoke CD player.

My friend said that he's not sure which format to use for the songs he burns to CD; he mentioned a few different formats like: CD+G, MP3, Zipped, etc.

What I'd like to know, is there a "universal" format he could use, so that he's able to burn me a CD that would play anywhere - regardless of what the KJ is using - whether it be a laptop, a karaoke CD player, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

- Dave

Uh- oh, that question will get you in trouble.

So let me be the first to tell you... I say it in a nicer way than most.

Burning copies of cdg's (or regular cd's) for other people is illegal. Nobody here will condone that nor tell you how to do it.

BUT....

That being said, if you are needing to make a copy of your own cdg's, for a "backup" copy:) ::

Use MP3+G Toolz to convert it. I place all the songs to be copied (MP3 + the cdg file) in a folder, then convert the whole folder to bin making a cue file.

Load the cue file into CDRWin to make the cdg.

Both of those programs can be found as freeware on the net. Just google them.

Hope that helps ya.

Thanks for the reply Mr. Blue.

So to clarify, if a person owning legal copies of karaoke songs wanted to make a backup copy for themselves on CD, they can follow your instructions. When they're finished, they will have a CD - but which format will the files be in, and where can that CD be played? Will it play on both a laptop and a karaoke CD player?

Thanks.

Karaoke player - Yes
Laptop - Yes, provided the cd drive is capable of reading cdg subtext.

And the audio portion will play on any cd player.

Actually making a back-up copy of the songs probably isn't legal ether.  The same purchased copy of the song can't be in two places at once.  Now if you were talking about your own original song that you wrote and wanted to turn into a Karaoke production.... CD+G is the standard but as has been mentioned not all computer based folks would be able to play that.  There is no universal format, but I would go with CDG if I were you.

Do I have to use CDRWin? Will Nero work? I can't find a free version of CDRWin to download.

Dave, making a backup copy of you own purchased CD+G which you are the owner of, is perfectlly legal. You may use the original, and archive the backup. Or you may use the backup, and archive the original as i have done. I also switched from CD+G to laptop, so i no longer actually need the backups. So i ran them all through my CD shredder.

Thanks again for the replies.

Okay I followed BlueStainedShoes' instructions:

1) I used MP3+G Toolz to convert the (MP3 + CDG) files to cue and bin files.

2) Then I loaded the cue files into CDRWin, and burned a CD successfully.

The CD works great. Here's my question...how can I make a copy of the CD I just made? Using Nero, I first tried a straight "Copy CD." Didn't work. Then I tried "Make an Audio CD." Didn't work either.

I'm just wondering if there's a way for me to make a copy of the CD instead of going through the CDRWin process again. Thanks.

What about 100% legal download sites like http://www.karaoke.cc (they are operated by Zoom Karaoke)? Or Karaoke Monthly site? MP3+Gs from them are legal to use.

Avast, ye scurvy dogs! I have no intention of walking nor sailing with Pirates. The only walking I'll be doing is into various karaoke bars where, if they don't have the songs I'm looking for, I'll just whip out my CD that has the songs I want to do. I'll then be able to entertain the crowd properly and thoroughly. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

This is for personal use only mateys.

Dave i sympathize with you bud, i really do. But there is actually no such thing as personal use. If you bought copies off ebay, or gottem from a buddy, whatever. If they taint yours to begin with, it's a no no. I don't give a shucks if ya take'em out in the front yard and use them for fresbies...they tain yours.....scurvy dogs ie lad. But ye who steps in dog chit, has a slippery slope to climb matey..... :rotflmao:

I completely disagree... for commercial or non-commercial uses...

As long as the copies in USE don't amount to more than you paid for, it shouldn't matter the format. As long as the manus got their money, and essentially, you're not profitting off the extra copy.

When I ran shows, I used CDRs after a couple of discontinued discs were broken... I was able to find one of the two, but never the second one. I had original discs scratched by careless house jocks...

No, I paid for that item, but I won't let stupidity take it away from me, not when the technology is there to help extend the life of your purchase!

Are you HONESTLY telling me that a home user, that buys their discs or tracks as a HOBBY can't make a compilation?? No way! That's just asinine!

knightshow, if you read the entire post you would know that the poster owns nothing!! He got the songs from a KJ friend of his and put together a compilation disc (or his KJ friend did it for him).
I suppose one could look at it this way-he was just borrowing the compilation disc from his KJ friend---forever.
And now "while he is in possesion of this disc he borrowed forever" he wants to make ANOTHER copy of it.
I guess my question is why do you need a second copy of a disc that you have no legal ownership in in the first place?

nope....not me matey...if i understand him correctly, he was talking about burning copies of copies...at least that was how i took it. Not disc he originally bought. Hell everyone makes back up archive copies of their own disc, that's old news. :dancin:

Sorry knightshow, without you quoting the post you were referring to in your original post, I, thought you were posting on the thread topic.

Taking that into account, I agree with you.
