Well the weekend went off pretty good.  We had a good older crowd come in late on Sat night that helped finish off a good two days.  There was this one couple that were already there, apparently he was in a band 'for years' as he put it...and came into sing.  He was a good singer, I'll give him that.  At first I enjoyed chatting with him and his little comments here and there.  Very fast though, it got way out of control...by the end of the night, I was getting down right annoyed.  The wife/gf whatever in the couple was a piece of work as well.  She was a shy singer, supposedly, but after each song she tried to sing (did ok), but she'd stomp back to the seat, mumbling to herself, the song wasn't right, the pitch was wrong, the words weren't right, too fast, too slow, etc.  I finally said look, I didn't make the karaoke songs.....and it's not like they were 'crap' versions...all though I do have a few 'off the wall', most of all my collection is sound choice/top hits monthly/chartbusters.  So the husband is continually 'coaching' her on how she should do it (karaoke) correctly.  She's fuming constantly.....driving me nutz.  Well the good crowd comes in, it's late..they want to dance and have upbeat songs sung to dance to.  That's great, I'm all over that.  So I cue up some stuff, organized the remaining slips to go with the flow.  Ya know, trying to do my job.  This guy, the husband (who knows it all) keeps coming up wanting to sing ever other turn.  Oh, you have to let me sing this or that.  Oh, you have to play this next.  Oh, you got to keep these people dancing.  Oh,oh,oh.  Finally, I was like...hey, let me do my job...PLEASE!  If you want to run the show...that's fine/be my guest, just go talk to the owner.  All in all...great reviews from everyone there, had a good night.  Another gentleman who got up to sing, then I talked to him after I shut down for a while, found out he has been a DJ for 30+ years apparently.  I enjoy the tips & recommendations for a better show, but there is a point...I mean......Just shut up & let me do my job!  Man it sure seems like I meet 3-4 people a night "that are or have been DJ's"  It's funny though, they're not working and I've never heard of them.  It's a small town/place.  I know most of the people.  Till next weekend, MrD

I know the type. It can be very irratating!

The funny thing is if the guy was a KJ for so many years he should know keeping a fair rotation is key. He obviously in my mind wasn't very good at KJing or he'd know asking to sing every other song isn't only a KJs nightmare, but unfair to all the others waiting.

We dont get those types anymore... If they are there they know they are listening to the best and I have the best host I have ever seen in 15 years.

I love this thread.  What amazes me are the people who come in at 12:30 and want to sing (Here the bar closes at 1:00.)  Or the people who insist that your rotation isn't fair if they don't get to sing four times in an hour.  I explain to them, "Do the math; each song is 4-5 min. multiply that times 20 singers and... it's 80 minutes in between your songs.  My rotation is more fair than LIFE.

Another thing.  God forbid nature calls and I leave my booth for 2 min.  I saw a guy mixing up my song slips last week.  I played it off like I didn't notice.  Little did he know that he was next.  He put his song in the last slot in the rotation.  LMAO So I put him in where he put his slip.  DEAD LAST.  He complained and I told him not to put his slip in the last slot and I wouldn't play him last.  Problem solved. :hi5:

Our last hour we go into fast mode and if it is a stranger will bump them up to get them in. If they come in again late they dont sing, but generally next week they are there early. I try to make it over to their table and talk to them if they are looking at a book.

And our regs dont complain because maybe at some time  they received the same treatment and are curious about new singers and welcome them unless they are falling down drunk. These dont get bumped either...

That's awesome if that works for you.  My regulars are a little less forgiving.  They are my friends and some of the best people I know.  I couldn't bump them with a clear conscious.

[glow=blue]I always explain to people...Its like the store. do you get in front of others at the store to get your stuff paid for? NO? we don't do that here either. if you come in late...the people who have been here all night..and are in the rotation come first. I havne't had any complaints for a long time now...and most who want to sing get there to hand in there slips. Gotta love em. [/glow]

Funny thing is you can't really use the store or bank lines as an example.  MANY times i've went into  a bank line & there is someone asking if there is a simple transaction to be made (ie deposit) & they get that person up that has been waiting in line & done & out of there.  Same with the store, been waiting in line & the next clerk over asks who is next & if you are 1 or 2 from the next, they will pull you over & be out before your turn would actually happen.  Same with the 'line' method such as some use as a line for a ride, Disneyland has a pass where you can purchase & just walk up in a separate line & be up ahead of everyone else that has been waiting (I guess you could call it an overpriced bribe), so maybe people don't see bribes as such a bad thing if they know about it, I personally won't take one, but know others that will.  Guess it all depends on the crowd.

I try to keep the rotation as fair as possible, but when someone "new" comes in "late", they may just get up before someone that has sung 4 times already that night.  It doesn't matter who you put up or in what rotation, someone will be not happy that it's not them.  What you have to do is try and keep most of the people happy most of the time.  Yeah the guy in the topic here wanted to sing Jonny Be Good...again, since there were more people here now & that's a good song.  I nodded to him and said we'll see.  Well guess what, the new crowd that came in and gave me new slips and they got put in ahead of the repeat...wonder if they'll come back....:)

I always put new singers toward the top of the rotation for there first song. I also never keep an exact rotation. I mix things up to keep similar songs together, I do still strive to keep it fair, but truthfully dont always succeed. the best known show in town is known for the fact that the host and 5 of his friends (who drink water)  sing the top of every rotation. when I get over 6 to 10 singers I pull myself and all of my close friends out. my friends may go back in every other rotation. my friends understand that I do this as a way to keep the bars regurlar patrons or people who only come to my shows there or at a couple places singing. my friends may not sing as much as they like sometimes but they get it. I think there are a lot of different methods for rotating singers that work, as long as you tell people how it will be and stick to it. fair to or favoring the people spending $$ is best

supercharged,

I very much am the same way, I use 'feel' on everything I do.  While this may not be the best way according to some, it's the way I do it.  You need to read the crowd and adapt/change to what's going on.  It's not always an easy task, but always continue tweaking.  There is always something that can be changed a little bit to make it better....MrD

EXACTLY!! it amazes me how many local kjs still do shows exactly the same as they did 5 years ago or more. Im a "newbie" still. I am always making changes to exactly how I do things, but it is alwas fair. THAT is one big reason I get as many shows as i do.
