Gig 3:

49 songs 18 different singers
Had my first "yeller" he hurt my (an a few other patrons) ears. Even though I had the mic volume about 30 db lower than the previous singer.....

Next week he starts out at -40 db from the starting point..... (the singer before him got about +10 db)

My left ear still hurts a bit this morning. That is just wrong....
He was the only one to push the volume into the red all night even though I had him turned down (after the first loud).

He was actually "singing" but able to get a real loud sound from his throat.

I also realize that with the shure 58s I have to remind a few people to sing into the mic not the side. Some of the cheaper mics are more forgiving of that.....

Wow, maybe every KJ on this board can start posting their setlists.  I can't think of anything more fascinating to read than a random list of songs that were sang at a karaoke show that I wasn't at.  Imagine how much better it would make the board if we had 50 people doing the same thing!!!

I think it is interesting because different places have different music interests. I know what goes over well with my current group, other places have different emphasis.

Often there is crossover and it may be worthwhile to know what is popular elsewhere.

If I had to switch bars to a place that had a different music genre/mix I might be interested in what songs are popular so I could customize my song list.

I won't bother to put in my list from last night -- actually, I don't have a way to publish it since I haven't switched to Compuhost yet. But most of you wouldn't know the songs -- it would feature names like Lefty Frizzell, Roy Drusky, Hank Williams, David Houston, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, and George Strait. There was one REO Speedwagon, and a couple of other old standbys (Johnny Angel, These Boots..., etc.).

I have never been a regular in a bar where country music was the MAIN karaoke. I actually don't know which country songs are the most popular. So I would find a list of performed country songs interesting. I know some of my patrons might feel differently, and I might want to be able to do a private party for people who like country.

Mine was a private party, and one for hardcore country fans at that. I would have done it for free, but the hostess insisted on paying me so I made a bit of money. (75 more gigs like that, and I might have paid for what I spent on gear and music!)

I don't do bar gigs, but around here I can tell you it is largely country -- though not all the old stuff in most places. A fake set list at a typical gig might be:

Since 98% of the time the first time I hear a song it is at karaoke I have to watch bulletin board charts and things like this to get an idea what songs are popular. KJ'S and DJ"S both do this. I would like a database where several posted and would only list the dups and number of times played.

Hey I think it is great that Dr Fred is enthusiastic about his first few shows. I remember that is how I was when I got started!  I also would like to be a his show after reading the songs that were played. Sounds like a good group of folks.

Your set lists are very similiar to what gets sung around here. I did find it interesting to see that.

As for country - sometimes I find that is the majority of songs sung. Other nights it's mainly good old rock & roll all night. I think country songs are easier to sing for most. Especially for the guys. There are a lot of great male singers at karaoke that sing in a lower range and it is hard to find songs for the lower male voice, unless it's country.

Bingo. I didn't listen to country music until I started karaoke three years ago. For a lower-range baritone like me, there just isn't much rock stuff. It's not like you can do Neil Diamond all night (though some men try... .  I don't want to do Frank Sinatra. There are some songs you can key down a bit, but so much of the stuff is for tenors or screamers. I am neither.

That leaves country, and now that I sing it I have learned to like it a lot. The songs are often schmaltzy, but quite a few of the lyrics of rock songs now sound contrived to me. I find that to be worse in a lot of ways, especially after you have heard the song 900 zillion times. I don't care if I ever hear Hotel California or Stairway to Heaven again....

My gigs are about 80 - 90 percent country.  I could get by with 1/4 of the library that I have.  Some classic rock and the occational drunk "Baby Got Back" or "Ice, Ice, Baby."  Personally, I sing 95% country myself.  You are welcome at my show anytime Doc.

--BTW-- As of Nov. 1, It's been three to five nights a week for five years for me.  Lots of fun and decent pay.

While I am in the Deep South (Georgia), country is not extremely big in the Karaoke bars I go to. The previous person who ran the Karaoke at the bar before me probably only did about 5% country songs (manly because he had almost none on his songlist). Another bar in town where I regularly do Karaoke does about 10%. On the other hand a couple other bars do almost all country karaoke.

I don't know country that well, and I dont sing much of it (except an occasional Johnny Cash). My curent bar, while not exactly unfriendly to the concept of country music specializes in more "Europop, Disco, Indie, New Wave" or similar music. While the bar owners don't seem to mind Country, a few patrons are downright hostile to it.

I live in a college town with 30 different bars, most within a half mile radius. Of course with that many different bars, most can not afford to be "generalist" bars. Most of the bars target different groups of people.

That is one of the main reasons why I am doing unpaid karaoke. The bar had been running karaoke for a couple years, and when the KJ had to move for a new day job, one of the regulars had to step up to do the KJ job. The bar has a very distinctive feel and music interest, and for that reason a "generalist" karaoke would not go over that well there. Even if they hired an outside experienced KJ, it would have taken that person a long long time to "fit in" in the bar and know the kind of songs that are wanted.

I have at least one friend who wants me to remove many of the country songs (and others) from the songbook. I don't plan to but certainly it is a way to "select" the crowd you want to attract.  I think the previous DJ did that a bit to agressively, and while it selected for a group of regulars that had similar music tastes and kept away some of the people who did not like that kind of music.

In a way, sometimes a smaller songlist if well selected may do better in such situations than a huge songlist, even if the bigger songlist contains all of the songs on the smaller one. The patrons will know that most of the songs that can be sung are the songs that they like, and will be encouraged to return.  If they don't like a particular kind of music they know they are not likely to have to sit through much of it. On the other hand the other singers who like other music types can go to the other 6 nearby bars that have karaoke  (3 on the  same night).  

The town has enough people that like Karaoke to support several bars doing it, and specializing helps a lot there. I am attempting to specialize in smaller shows with an emphasis on 80s pop, New Wave and Indie Rock and an occasional Oldie thrown in. The singing may not be as good, but it is the music we like to listen to. Another bar in town tried to do empahsis on Heavy Metal Karaoke for a while. The bar went broke but that probably had little to do with the one night a week they did karaoke.

In a large area one might get away with trying to draw a certain crowd Years ago we were doing a consult with a night club owner He started saying I just want country and 50's rock. I stood up and said this interview is over. You will not dictate what my customers sing I dont care if you pay $500/night..You run the bar I run the show!!!!CYA...

Right now we have a good cross  section of age range and genres. I get bored with the same ol crap over and over and so does everybody else.

A year ago I too was doing my first shows. at my first show I was giving away like 6 pairs of motley crue and aerosmith tickets. it was well advertised. I wound up with the bar just packed, and about 30 singers in rotation for most of the night! other than being down on power for the size of the crowd and on the verge of clipping my amp all night, and having some crappy mikes that wanted to feed back the show went great. then I wound up in a job that had me out of karaoke till spring. now its blown up on me, Ive got several dates on the calender where my normal co host is runing the second system and we do 2 to 4 shows a week.It is not all good tho, I have spent a small fortune on equipment. my co host and I are a great selling team. our show re books itself that helps a lot in making us buisy. "Always leave em wanting more".
