Hi All,
Just a quick question, is it possible to convert an 8 ohm speaker to a 4 ohm speaker, without paralleling 2 - 8 ohms?
Maybe with some resistors?

Nope.......

A speakers nominal impediance is determined by the actual voice coil. The voice coil is a simple device that consists only of thin copper wire  wrapped in a coil-like fashion. The number of wraps and the diameter of the wire used is what determines the resistance of the coil.

Adding resistors to the input of the speaker would only fool the amp, and would not have the desired effect.

While we are on the subject, no speaker offers a "fix" measure of resistance at all times. Thats why they state "nominal" 8 Ohms or 4 Ohms.....The actual resistance offered by the speaker varies considerably thru the frequency range.

That said, the best way to convert is to swap speakers inside the cabinet, but don't attempt until you check with manufacturer. The reason for that is the design of the box.....You do not want to swap in a speaker that is not tuned to the box. Most manufactures of pro gear offer both 4 and 8 ohm versions that will work fine, but check with them first.

What are you trying to do? I could tell you how to do it however half the power would wasted as heat and you would have half volume. It would be similar to using a l-pad attenuator.

With a 70 or 25 volt system you could use line matching transformers however this is 32 watts max per speaker and used to distribute sound with several speakers.

I was just trying to match it to the amp ratings at 4 ohms.
Thanks anyways I'll just take it back to the store and have them swap it.

Yeah, if they are brand new and the seller offers 8 ohm versions of same, then swap. That is the best way to go!

Whoa Hoss, you WANT 4 Ohm speakers vice 8 Ohm!

I bet you got too small an amp and wanna run stereo at 4 Ohms per channel to boost amp power rather than run mono parallel at 4 Ohms, huh?
