Doesn't have to be JUST musicians, but I want to be in an artsy area, where there stuff all around within close proximity, where I don't need to drive 1/2 hour to be in the heart of an area with a lot of musicians...I need to be around musicians all my waking hours when I'm done working, I can't get enough of music chatter and interaction.. (no not my singing). I'll also need to relocate, There's just no musical oppt where I am now, as a result I'm bored and lonely... But I want to be in an environment with musicians that's safe, and affordable.. Where I can step outside my door and somebodies into some type of music. It's just ALL over..
Where would this be ? Nashville ? Branson ? Atlanta ? Chicago ? New Yorks out've the question as is LA... Maybe an area by a university would be necessary for such an environment these days ? Not sure Boston would be the best place for Blues, R&B, Contenporary style musicians everywhere.. Any ideas ? Affordable too ? Did I mention that ?

Well, obviously, my first response would be NY...but...yeah...not too economical. *laugh* I'd probably look into Branson. I know there's a LOT going on there.

Thanks. I've heard that about Branson. I can't afford a safe area of NY, Yes, NY of course WOULD be ideal. I might be able to afford a large Westinghouse box on the Jersey Pylon (ground area) under the George Washington Bridge, but I'd prefer not to have quite so many pigeons as roommates.

Get you a good 4 X 4 (or stout pony) and just move up in the Ozarks;)
Those people have music for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
But, way up in the mountains, they rarely have electricity.... you wouldn't have any more internet. :O

This means, You folks would get the lucky reprieve you are wishing for, and I'd be playing dueling banjo's with Cletus.
NOPE

Actually Charmin, For a moment I was afraid you were going to suggest that I move to the Music Capital of the Pacific coastal area

Actually, you tell my b/f Cletus that Dueling Banjos happens to be one of only 3 songs I play on banjo, and I'll have him as my dueling pardner any time;)
I think Cletus would fit in just fine here in the Great Northwest.
And actually, thought it's still standing, that sign looks a bit different now. It has streaks of tobacco juice spit on the left side, and a couple rounds of buckshot have blown off the upper right corner... dang grade schoolers.
Steven Kaplan, if you get the chance, you go to Branson Missouri.... I've had my heart set on that place for a LONG time.... I've heard it's full of music and musicians everywhere you go. Though I do imagine you'd have wannabe's on every street corner waiting to "get discovered"... I saw that a lot in Nashville too. Kinda cool, but kinda overkill sometimes too.
You could always move to Weiser Idaho... or atleast go there for the festival. It's a fiddling competition, but you get all sorts of musicians from all over the US... it's quite a (sleepless) experience. The talent you hear there in the campgrounds is UNbelievable. Residents there pretty much live for that one week every summer. (it's a sleepy little town when the fiddlers pack up and go home) But hey, that way you could stay living HERE in the forums, and take your weeks paid vacation at the festival. (Phill IS offering you paid vacations now, right? If not... you need to approach him about your forum benefit package)

Stephen do a Google search on 'live music capitol of the world'. It will mostly be full of pages on Austin (where I live). We're home to Austin City Limits including the Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL Fest) along with South x Southwest Music and Film Festival. There are lots of clubs that continually have live music here. There are other fests too. I'm thinking of hitting the current Fantastic Fest www.fantasticfest.com. It's a genre festival of film featuring horror, pulp, action, animae, etc. We have our share of street musicians as well.
Is Austin really the 'music capitol of the world'? - I'm not really sure but certainly we are one of the top locations. Austin is a University town featuring a number of nearby Universities. Austin is a small town that has grown a ton. Some of that is good, and some not so good.
Depending on how you live, and how you are plugged in Austin can be a laid back community of people interested in such cultural entertainment arts. I'm sure there are plenty of groups and places to hang with other musicians. But of course Austin isn't for everybody, and I certainly don't want 'everybody' to be here.
I suppose the only way to find out would be to come in and tour during one of the festivals and experience all that the town has to offer. ACL Fest has just ended. I believe South by Southwest is this Spring.

Sounds as though I'd currently fit in perfectly ! At this point given how little I've been doing with music over the past several years, I'd have to find my own street corner. But at least I'd in time hopefully build back something.. (Worst case scenerio hang out here again) I've heard a lot of stuff about Branson ! I'm going to do a google earth search and find out how the area is looks, etc.. Quote: You could always move to Weiser Idaho... or atleast go there for the festival. It's a fiddling competition, We gave bluegrass festivals here in CT too. Once a year in Canaan. Not my thing. Not sure many people moving to find an area that's loaded with popular music venues, and rock and blues musicians immediate think, "Idaho". Any university area would offer more than that Charmin. I want musicians around all year. I think Branson sounds like a feasable option.. Need to start researching, and thanks ! Quote: (Phill IS offering you paid vacations now, right? I opted for the medical bene's and dental coverage ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif) instead. Couldn't have it both ways [/quote]

I'm afraid of the outskirt area welcome wagons.. I'd move to Austin, and be all comfy, start typing in here, and undercover cops would jump out've my closet and some sting operation (to avoid people that talk like me driving on the streets) would handcuff me for appearing to be TUI (Typing under the influence), not just because of my weird looking puss, and the weird noises I make while trying to sing, but because I even talk funny (like a yankee) so they'd arrest me and I'd get thrown in jail indefineately, that way they wouldn't have to worry about what potential damage I might do walking outside to the mailbox (assuming I ever left the computer), Also people with Ct accents down in the Austin outskirts might be more prone to dive off've hotel balconies into swimming pools and miss..
But on a serious note, Austin does have some decent blues.... Need to look into it, thanks !

Well, the other side of it is Austin now has tons of people from both coasts. Most of the people that can purchase the more expensive housing 250K and up aren't from around here. They've bailed from California or New York where they have big property values but not much sq foot wise or quality wise to show for it. Then they come here and by some very nice upper middle class or better housing. Parts of Austin in the hills looks like Hollywood or Beverly Hills I suppose. We've had a big influx lately as property values have declined elsewhere they have actually been going up here. My house has gone up nearly 30K this year alone.

I'm starting to like the sound of Austin, a small condo around here is 250K. A Home with a little sprawl of property 3X that. And for what ? I haven't a clue.. Time to head elsewhere. I hate heat and humidity tho... Texas is likely out.. As is flordia

I was going to suggest Austin too... I've never been there, but we've been thinking of moving there too. Only thing is, I'm afraid it's mostly a 'country' music scene.. which, well... blech. But maybe it's not. One can have hope. ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

I doubt it Johnny and Edgar winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Austin city limits... EVEN assuming there's a heavy concentration of country, if an area has enough music and musicians, it'll have MOST styles of pop and contemporary. Look at Nashville.. If an area is HUGE into arts it's seldom limited to ONE form despite concentration and general outlying preference.
(of course outlying areas were throwing people in jail that were drinking IN bars just based on how they appeared IN the bar, meaning, I don't want to start playing Rock and get thrown in jail in an ultraconservative area that doesn't want "My type" around.. I don't wish to become a new source of fun for some townhall that wishes to play "Pin the tail on the yankee")

My hairs no longer long. It's the same length it's been in all the photos I have.. Reason being that as it starts thinning a bit you can't have it really long because that shows the thinning.. I keep it shorter. I'm pretty conservative looking.. As long as I never open my mouth folks down there would like me. BTW, What type of food do people eat in that part of the world ? Would I be able to get used to it ? I haven't picked up a national geographic in years so I don't recall the differences.. Do the ladies down there still have plates in their lower lips, and all those rings around their neck ?
Nah seriously tho, I know all about the south, grew up in New Jersey !

I'm afraid of sheer drop cliffs tho ! I've seen some of those photos of the chasms and even golf courses ! Addionally VIcki, LOok at the probs you have getting certain brand music equip in NZ.. It's tougher there to get a lot of things.
On the otherhand, in terms of beauty and clear air that's likely JUST the type of area I'd love
Since I've never been midwest or west or further west than eastern Great Lake Area (Niagra) Jamestown, Buffolo, Erie. ETc.. I have no idea about climates.. Here's my concern tho with Gulf areas, Texas etc... Heat and Humidity.. I don't do well with either.. My guess is Branson and Nashville Humidity wouldn't be any worse than what CT has been having to tolerate the past decade however I don't know.. Ct is horrible in terms of tropical summers. But the Heat I've heard gulf area gets is steadily tougher to handle.

Maybe back to Toronto, or Montreal ? Haven't been to Montreal since Exp0 1970.. Dunno.. Canada might be easier for me climate-wise.. Not sure Toronto wouldn't be a great area for me either.. Yet dunno.. Boulder colorado ? THat's artistic supposedly. Problem is, it's a BIG country, and I've not scene 90% of it. Just the eastern area.
