You are so beautiful sounded excellent Billy (as I stated in the showcase). I'm thinking that going slow, giving EVERYTHING a chance to heal, and rebuild, and doing some softer warmup stuff, maybe those zinc lozenges (or something like that) can help relax the cords. (also helps the smoking urge a little too)  My guess is at one point you'll be singing soft as you did during parts of the JCocker song and all of a sudden while in head voice just hit an upper octave in falsetto effortlessly as the body heals. Less constriction and irritation from that abrasive smokey stuff will give the cords a new chance.

Vicki,  I'm Listening to Karen Carpenters rendition too to recall the concept.  I'll do a few head-to-heads so I have some means of understanding.. I forgot her version of this.

OK,  This is interesting.  You've kept to her original key of Bb and slightly modified the phrasing... I'll need a little time with this one Vicki.. I'll need to listen at least several times. I'll have something for you today.  Would it be correct for me to make the assumption you are trying to add your OWN styling as opposed to nailing a cover version ?  My assumption is you are, but I have no right to assume anything.
Meaning depending on what you are trying to do with the song, makes ALL the difference.

Steven you are correct...I dont have the benefit of the Carpenters to compare. So it was an attempt by memory only...In my case I never try for an exact cover, maybe its due to my inability I dunno

Milo,  I have the same issue, I really want some gravel to my clean voice but from what I've been told, (and was reminded about again recently by Operakitty when I was explaining to her my embarassment over my voice) is that the rock gravel singing *I* wish I could come close to matching is often the result of damaged vocal cords, smoking etc.. It's not a natural healthy characteristic in a singer apparently

I have a very clean voice, but not a rock singer voice.

You know, a little off the exact topic but it seems there's two different sites here. With some exceptions, it seems the SS people hardly ever make a showing over here. And I don't see the forum dwellers too often over there, except in commenting. I started noticing since the "showcase" link was installed. More often than not when I read a post about something interesting someone has to say, I'll go to listen to their subs and...nothing.  There's so many singers over here that I would love to hear sing. They could just be like me, having trouble recording songs, but it just struck me as odd. Do the hardcore SS people even know that these debates go on from time to time over here?  Just a silly observation.

Very good point Tink...I would go so far as to guarantee that neither site is on the same server as the other...as I can access SS no trouble, yet have to access KS via proxy server.
KS is moderated, SS is not.
So yeah there is quite a division

A TRUE observation (not silly). There are not that many members who frequent both the forum and SS. There are those who just confine them self to SS only and hardly ever come over to the forum. Like wise there are many who only come to the forum and hardly go to SS. Its both way.

This is going off topic....

Ok Billy I am never going to offer you an honest comment EVER again...expect to be fluffed from here on sir :P

and I hope you know that that is a lie, cos I am normally honest especially if someone subs under C...there are a few exceptions cos I have learned along the way some just cant take honesty no matter what they say...I know you dont fall into that category ;)

Meanwhile be prepared for a record number of listens and comments as folk pull the poor witch apart for daring to speak out...lmfao

I know. I prefaced my comment with that but I thought it was only a little off topic because of my underlying thought. I thought it funny because the exact [type of] singers these threads are about will probably never even come over here to read them. I guess if this helps at least one singer to rebuke the fluffs, then it's all worth it. I still love the topic though.

SIngers Showcase is not what most would consider "Critique friendly". Just the way things are. Some are fed up because they wish for honesty in the showcase but realize few others dare to tell them things that will benefit them ..  Hence,  this thread.  Jian, Lonnie, and many others DO wish for Critiques when they ask for them,  some DO wish for honesty and mature interaction and help improving as singers. Those that do wish to improve have EVERY right to honest interaction, in fact MANY have shown that they CAN handle critiques.. Even mods and veteran KS members know that Singers Showcase works for some but many don't wish for actual Critiques although they state they do.

I hope those in SS find out about this thread because I'm confident many support there being SOMEPLACE within Karaoke Scene where people don't talk about why the process can't work, but instead have a place to Critique back and forth without mudslinging.. Too much time is spent complaining about the process..

Here's the place to Critique and show all that the process isn't dangerous, it's positive so those that WANT critiques should ask in here,  some of us will be happy to help assuming we can.. But it can't be just me doing it.. LOL , it must be "us"

Since attacking others is not allowed, with the help of the moderators I believe in here WE CAN show that critiquing CAN and WILL work within KS..

Well, last week I noticed a conversation with Steven and Charmin and some others (I don't feel like combing the threads right now) but posting it in the forums that you put up a song for honest critique is probably the best way to actually get one. I would feel a little more "safe" to give my honest opinion. I'm not an expert but I know what my ears like.  I think I can tell if someone is off key or something obvious like that. I would have to feel really, really positive that the singer wants an honest critique though. I haven't subbed any songs yet, but when I do, retaliation isn't that far in the back of my mind. I'd probably wait and lurk a little until other more brave souls have given theirs.  I still think most people don't really want honest opinions. They just want to feel like stars and there's nothin' wrong with that.

I'm happy to get critiqued at any time, on any of my songs, and you don't have to do it here. :) However, if you're just going to tell me that I need to improve my breathing, I already know :)
I always choose "comment" and "rank" and I welcome ANY comments!  I am happy to give critique, too, if someone asks for it.  But I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

One thing that would help advertise this is if a known, respected member of SS could record an audio announcement and sub it like a song on SS with a written description explaining what's going on in this thread. You could even accept questions and comments with the sub and give answers if needed. This announcement sub routine has worked before in the past for issuing other bulletins.  Quite a few people will listen to and read the advertisement!
