Sat my host (ive known him for years he is the best host I have seen)  played hiphop (low volume) for the diinner crowd.(7:30-8) A birthday party (finally 21) was setting up. I have never seen a crowd so fired up at karaoke in my life It reminded me of disco. Half of the crowd was standing and watching with awe at the singers sometimes.

I just hadda put this photo on the web The big black dude is Wallace  He sings me and mrs jones and the crowd goes nuts He is awesome Everybody just loves him. This is during let me clear my throat by dj cool. (played all the way thru) and the boys gettin wid it!!! The whole crowd was laughing and clapping. Note the mt beer pitchers.. Also note the A-1 sauce This place serves the best food until 10 or later. Most of the building is pizza parlor and arcade. The owner came up and said I am going to move that wall over I said Dance floor?   Oh you bet.

The gal looking at me is Maggie. I have sang with her for years She is another awesome singer One of her best is Tu Solo Tu.

Wallace

Imagine the same effect, except 200 or so people dancing instead of 20, and you have my Saturday night show. Gotta love the filler music!!

No it's not that I don't believe in it, it's that I am hired to kj, that's what I give them.  If I was hired to dj, then that's what I would give them, if I was hired to do both, then that's....etc, you get the picture.  We have a heavy karaoke crowd & do not do dance sets because our singers - which I am hired to cater to - wouldn't stay around.  Not saying it doesn't work in other places where dj sets go, several places around here are dropping karaoke altogether & going strictly dj or doing the mix-up.  Our club don't require that change, as of yet, when it does I am already ready & set-up for it.  Here is a pic of our dancefloor during a strictly karaoke show.  People will have fun where they want to have fun regardless of the entertainment.

That looks awesome.. I just love a high energy show... At my show we are required to play filler. The owner does not want any dead air.....  We do not play any entire songs we play 30 to 45 seconds, just enough to get the next singer up to the stage. And we only play one dance song between rounds.  But when you have 20+ in a round, that is not very often.

I think us "West Coasties" and particularly The "Northwest Coasties" take our karaoke mores seriously than the average area .....nothing gets a show shut down quicker around here than a KJ who insists on playing dance music between singers, especially if the  majority of the crowd doesn't care for the particular genre of music they play. I scope out the crowd, most of whom I recognize, and put on a compilation of "finger snappers" - and play just enough to move on to the next singer. Different strokes I guess ....

Whether you play filler music or do a dance set is an individual choice and NEED depending on your venue and clientele.  If your show rocks with back to back singers  THATS GREAT ......If show doesn't mind a DANCE SET or FILLER ---Heck thats great also .....  NEITHER ONE IS RIGHT OR WRONG.

As long as the BOSSMAN is happy and the customers keep coming back
whichever way you go is ...THE RIGHT WAY

Heck some times my Saturday gig is back to back to back singers
sometimes I'll play a dance set, depending on who is in the bar at that time.

Adapt,survive and conquer!   :drunk:   :)

LMAO We don't even have a dance floor, but the karaoke people seem to make places to dance.

It depends on your crowd like anything else. Give'em what they want I say.

I struggle with this one because I believe that ENERGY is a big part of the evening.  Sure singers want to sing.  A lot of singers suck!  That's not an opinion that's a fact.  Not everybody that comes out to the bar is there for karaoke.  That's something I think we forget sometimes.

I usually play a four or five song set before my show starts and it's either country, alternative, or classic rock stuff.  I will try and follow a dance song (hip hop) that someone sings with a dance track to give the dancers another song to jam to.  At the end of my show I always throw on 3-4 dance jams or 80s rock songs (depending on the vibe).  It does wonders to get people revved.

I filled in at a venue on Saturday night, where normally the karaoke sucks bad.  It's not the KJs fault so much as the owner has shoddy equipment.  I brought my own stuff in and rocked the place.  It was a younger crowd, but the dance floor was full half the night.  The owner told me before I started that they wanted to to DJ night at least once a week and I can see why.

Even with the 1-2 filler songs I slip in the middle of my show I still average 55-56 singers a night and my rotation is usually 10-20 singers.  Most of my regulars get 3-4 songs in minimum, as people tend to hop around to the different bars and may only pop in to sing a song or two.

I think it depends on the crowd, but for the younger crowds DJ dance music is a hit.

Ultimately, we're there to sell alcohol and put butts in the seats (or shoes on the dance floor).

See many get this confused.  Fill music to me is exactly as you describe, something to cover the dead air as the next singer is coming up...no more, no less, usually no more than 30 seconds maximum.
Others describe "fill" music as ENTIRE songs being played in between singers, to me this is not fill music, this to me is dj'ing in between karaoke.

Right I didnt check my original post to see what I called it sometimes I do use the general term fill but when I describe my show its KJ/DJ

Sometimes its KJ with small amount of DJ (mostly in the last hour or two) Sometimes its DJ with a few singers like at a private party. It depends on the crowd. We have 3 groups to satisfy singers listeners and dancers.

Yea Lonnie it depends on the venue this venue is mostly a pizza and and good food place with an arcade and laser tag.  The bar originally had low priority. But he is talking expanding the bar now. One reason I like him is he listens to customers and caters to them. He also gives us full reign as far as the ratio of KJ DJ and lets us do our thing. This ratio varies with the crowd and even time of night.

I got tired of 30-40 drunk singers and dont even like going to a show like that anymore. With DJ the radical drunk singers go elsewhere I would rather have 10 good sober singers than 40 drunks Our ratio runs 10:1 crowd singers. Drunk singers do not attract people into a bar like they used to.. Even the crowd is more sophisticated now and got tired of the drunks.

The till even on sat is probably more food than drinks The food here is awesome!!! We both have a $25 dollar bar tab and chow down :D  I'm not a pizza fan but his is the best I ever had.. I had a chicken dinner the other night with mashed potoes and the gravy was the best I have had in a long time...

I am always playing music.  I think we are hired more than to announce and call people up.  We are hired to generate atmosphere, and music is the perfect way to generate atmosphere.  The trick is to make the mood "move" according to the music the singers are requesting...  whatever a singer requests, I usually have 2-3 songs that I can think of...  and depending on the next song, I will usually put filler music that works as a segway between the two songs.
