So Babs NEVER watched Arachnophobia ? Heck, Even I watched Anaconda and I'm scared of those things... Well, I was at somebodies house and they had it on.. Never watched snakes of a plane
Quote: With the West Nile out here Im more concerned more with skeeter bites.
How bad is West Niles by you? We have a few cases every year here
Funny, past two years I've heard very little about it here in New England, it was reportedly getting very bad years back, but this year and last year outside of one or two isolated cases, it wasn't a big concern (at least in Southern New England). For awhile whenever a dead crow was spotted it made headline news. Now West Nile isn't that big of a concern (at least currently in my location), not even maps this year regarding it's spread

Quote: Wolf spiders do have the capability to bite humans, but they lack the desire.
Oh believe me. Up north they must have more desire ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) . While few pick them up (due to their scarier look - they are actually in the Lycosidea family which means they are in the "tarantula family" of spiders) they can deliver a healthy painful bite. I'd just never pick one up without using a VERY long object to escort them outside assuming I found one inside.. They are nasty looking and get LARGE. Wolf spiders are commonly found throughout most of North America. It's no wonder it's scary to many, while I forgot the technical name for the class of spiders (and had to google that area) I did recall learning they are the same family as tarantulas, and they get pretty large up around here, love the woods, and as it gets cold, warm homes, and while it's not usually dangerous to humans, it's poisoness, CAN cause necrosis *especially sourthern species* and it bites people ocassionally when on the rag.. I've had friends bitten by those nasty buggers.
Babs, there's a good reason you are starting to see those around now. As temps get colder in the northern states, they are attracted to household conditions and borrow our homes for warmth and comfort, they migrate to warmer locations after summer ends and love sharing with us ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) ... So set an extra place at the table, and get the guest room ready ! Wolf Spiders get VERY large, and are solid spiders that look friggin scarier than most species..

We have many around the house, mostly the harmless one. Just have to get used to them.
Oh there are the house lizards and the croch too.

I figure this article on spiders MUST be written by a woman LOL
Quote: Often you hear that, after mating, the male spider is eaten by the female. That's true in only a few species. However, it is true that in many species, once the male has mated, from nature's point of view he's no longer of value so he forthwith "dies of natural causes."
I might be wrong about the N Carlina Wolf Spider being in the North America Tarantula classification of Spider. I think in Europe the Wolf spider is known as a tarantula, but isn't the N American Tarantula also known as a bird spider ? Not sure. I think they are in the same class of spider.. Wolf spiders are night hunters and don't use webs to catch their prey. I'm glad I don't fear bugs.. Neat little critters

When I lived in California, the tarantulas used to come up on the highways in the mountains after a rain. I used to go up there and scoop them up and sell them to pet stores. They make lovely pets.

Eeeew! I couldn't think of a worse dinner companion. If I saw a spider during dinner I know I wouldn't be able to finish my meal. They gross me out that much. Oooh maybe you've come up with the newest diet secret. Thanks kappy. Maybe I can get off this last 10lbs of weight that is plaguing me.

Matt that is horrible - I hope you have fully recovered. How did it get so bad? Does the bite get bad so fast you don't have time to combat it quickly.

Ants and Bee behaviour is fascinating. Read about it... Also saw it on the Discovery channel ! What are those large spiders in the middle east ? Desert spiders ? Chicks dig those !!! ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif)
guess number three would be most correct, although i studied entomology at purdue. i started my career at terminix. now i own my own company.

Wow Steve.
I've been offered jobs like that too. Comes naturally for me.. I'd just go into their kitchen and start singing and cockroaches would freak and start running out've all their hiding places thinking it's Armegaddon.

Anyone who has ever had a place in the great outdoors or wilderness knows that spiders may be thier best friends, THEY EAT INSECTS.
During the period when i had my place way out in the woods i never killed spiders, Whenever they were in areas i didn't want them to be in i picked them up with my hand and moved them. I even moved one from its crawling on my bed.

I have this quirky thought that I have no right killing anything just because "I don't like it". I'll escort most bugs outside, yet I won't sit around while a mosquito is snacking on me, in that case I'll kill it... But bee's, spiders (unless the only other option will almost certainly get my stung) don't get killed. Similarly small snakes eat insects too, while I'm horrified of them, I won't kill them. I just stay away from them.. I don't like to kill things just because "I can". Me feelings are that ALL living things fight to survive, nothing wants to die.

don't get me wrong. when it comes to a vertabrate pests, i don't feel wonderful when i kill them, but it does put food on the table...no i don't eat them. as for invertabrates, they don't have a nervous system like other animals so they don't feel pain. at least not in the way we do. most of them only live a few days anyway. i've had folks ask me if there is a way to get rid of ants without killing them. i've had more "odd" requests than i care to mention. after all, i live in one of the most ecologically sesitive areas in the world, so i have to be very careful about how i conduct my business. i use only the most eco friendly products on the market and i use them as sparingly as possible. we practice a program called IPM which stands for Intergated Pest Managment. Basically it means using the least amount of chemical to get the job done and sometimes it only means changing the surroundings or environtment such as cleaning up dead leaves or moving a pile of firewood. A lot of times, there's no need to use any chemical at all. In fact my job entails quite a bit of education to the public rather than killing. i like that part!

Those large critters in the Middle East are called Camel Spiders. When my son was in Iraq (twice) he sent several pics and would tell stories bout those hairy suckers--said they're faster than lightning. I won't mention some of the things they'd do but they would keep someone on watch during the night for those sleeping's protection because they deliver NASTY bites.
