As far as starting on time - I think it depends on your enviroment. I don't always start exactly on the hour when I only have 1 or 2 singers there. Not becuase there aren't a lot of singers because lord knows there coming. LMAO It's because they are usually talking to me. They aren't in any hurry and they want to discuss something with me. I figure if they wanted me to start they'd let me get to work.  LMAO

It doesn't matter to me if I only have 1 or 2 singers to start. With me singin that makes 3. Sometimes it's more fun. Try songs you wouldn't normally do. Do duets with each person. Goof around. :D

You do what works in your enviroment - no judgement here.

I would send them to this site. I would tell him he could learn a lot here about how to handle the rotation.   Maybe he would check it out and figure it out, and do a better show....

That's exactly what I'm talking about, Babs. Good for you.  I get to try new songs and practice older songs without "wasting" my turn. It's definately a lot of fun and the smaller crowd gives me a little more courage. It's good for helping to get over that debilitating stage fright that I still can't seem to shake off 100 percent, even after 3 years.

It's a show, there's a system to it.  People understand that.  Are you saying if you started your show at 9 and no one showed up til 10, you'd sing for an hour, alone?

Yep that's exactly what i'm saying.  Usually in this rare case, people will request songs for me to sing until they're ready or try to stump the host with suicide song requests.  We advertise 9, we start at 9!

Not always.

The few that show up at 9, know that it may be 15 minutes before the karaoke starts. It's never made anyone stop coming.  Hell, many of them use this time to request a favorite song.  One of the woofers is out on the jukebox speakers so it's a bonus to hear they're favorites on a booming system.  Like I said different shows, different standards.

This is true.  Guess i'm lucky that slips are generally on the table before I even get there.  We have on the jukebox karaoke starts at 9 - any song playing after this will be cut off.

It's all about being consistent so people don't come in expecting something they don't get.  I've got repeats coming in from 25 miles away because they know what to expect and appreciate my candor and brand.

Consistency is also key, if starting later than your advertised time works for you, so be it, wouldn't fly for me.

Around here few go to local bars "for Karaoke", relative to the numbers that sit at the bar watch TV, play pool, etc.  There's no "Karaoke bars" in my area where most are there early "for Karaoke".  I suppose it just didn't really catch on to the extent some of you state it has in your locations.  Either that, or your pros, and know something these folks don't know.  Bottomline is, You go to a bar at nine, people aren't singing, most at these places are still eating dinner, or sitting nurturing a drink watching television at the bar.  Karaoke might start at around 10, and even then, the entertainer is sitting at the bar watching TV with most of the other patrons even on friday and saturday. Around 10:30 a few might wish to sing, but if the KJ started singing too early here, UNLESS he could really sing and would be considered "Singing quality entertainment" I don't think MOST wouldn't be annoyed at these bars despite the fact they advertise Karaoke. (Seems in reality, there are no JUST Karaoke bars around here) that wish for Karaoke early PM IN THIS area.  Interesting differences I suppose.

It used to be that way here when we first started the club - later singers, regular bar patrons, but once they knew the music went on & tv's changed over at 9, they 'sang' a different tune & either started singing or had to listen to me doing tv theme songs until they did.  Only needed to that twice before we got regular singers consistantly at 9.

I think that an important point that does not seem to be addressed in most of the comments on the KJ singing is the whole situation really depends on what the bar is giving the KJ.

If the KJ is being paid well, yes the bar patrons are obviously priority. Then the KJ sings once to test out the setup at the start, and to get the songs rolling in a very short rotation (<5), otherwise not.

If the KJ is being paid nothing, or only free drinks, it is up to the KJ if he wants to sing more (within reason). This also applies if the bar is paying only a token amount that will take years to equal the KJ's investment.

What the KJ makes should have absolutely no bearing on how he/she/they run a Rotation. If a KJ is not getting paid to run a show or is working for only free drinks and/or food, then that person hasn't got a clue about good business practices or Professionalism.
