One of the best sounding karaoke venues I have attended uses JBL EON G2 powered speakers and a yamaha mixer.  Those speakers really do pack a punch.  Of course there  are advantages and disadvantages to using powered speakers... they are heavier 'cause they have the amp built in...  but then you know that the speakers and amps are totally matched, less equipment to lug around and an easier set-up, if you lose an amp, at least you can still run with the other speaker!

Taking a chance on not getting beat up on again if i suggest another product. But as far as speakers go. If you do decide to go the powered speaker. May i suggest the carvin LM15A. These are powered speakers using the new Neodymium speaker componets. I think that Nyodymium componets are the way of the futture. These great speakers weigh in at an amazing 39 pounds each! I have a set of the non powered LM15's. I use for church, and other venues. I can carry one in each hand. And these sound incredible. You might want to check their midsized board out to. I have Carvins' C844U. A great mixer at only $399.99

Carvin C844U an amazing $399.99 alota mixer for $400 bucks.

Very cool. I really thank you for all the replies. Any drawbacks to powered speakers besides the weight?

You know...i can't think of any factor that would be of that geat of significance that would deter me from purchasing a powered speaker, or a powered mixer for that matter. Because i like to tinker with audio, i do alot of external effect patching, and in the situations that i perform in. A non powered speaker and board suit my needs better. But hey, some folks here have had great luck with powered speakers and mixers, so i would not dismiss them too lightly.
Here is a picture of the Carvin Neodymium LM15 that i use sometimes, when i get tired of lugging around my PeaveySP2's. You may hear some say you need a bigger amp to power these neo's..nonsense...i used a 150Watt RMS on these the other night,....and had power to spare. I have found that in the "watt for watt" ratio, my SP2's require more headroom then these neo's of approx the same ratings. You can only know for sure by experimentation. Good luck in your search. If i can be any help at all in any small way, just drop me a line.

Main drawbacks to powered speakers is you need to find an outlet for each - usually not a big deal, but i've seen some clubs where you would need long extention cords per speaker.  On occasion you can get a bad ground outlet on one side & get a hum on that speaker.
Not upgradeable - if you feel you need more power, they are locked in at what they are.

As well as a mixer, you might consider a way to record your personal tracks in your home or on the road. I use an affordable recording studio I purchased called a Field Pack at http://www.vocaltrainingwarrior.com. They will give you a free custom manual on how to run the hardware and software. If you are building a Karaoke Studio, I found this to be an important decision.

Good Luck,

Ok, so im starting to do my research on individual components to build out my Karaoke setup.

Starting with a mixer Lonman has suggested a Mackie CFX12, does anyone else have any input on mixers?

Thanks,

~Lazer

My vote without a doubt:
1) Mackie 1202-VLZ3 (newest version has the best mic pre's and WAY BETTER SOUNDING than their CFX line)
2) JBL PRX512M powered speakers (only 40lbs too! sound so amazing!)
3) I'd definitely go external effects - like a Lexicon MX200)
4) I also believe having a good 2 channel compressor for your mics - like a DBX166XL
5) Get a SKB case (they are not expensive) to rack your gear (excluding the mixer)

...tips:  get cardioid mics and not supercardioid - so off axis singing is more forgiving for the non-pros :)... I'm a fan of Sennheiser and Shure for karaoke (in my opinion)

...I'm also a big fan of have a 3rd speaker on the floor for your singer's monitor (if you have the funds)

good luck with everything!

I see you have gotten lots of input, so i'll add a little more. I seen a couple of posts steering you away from powered mixers, not real sure other than i'm sure not all powered mixers are created equal. First I'd like to state that I have four mixers, A Behringer 1832FX that I usually only use for a monitor mix when needed(Band situation), not a bad mixer but I wouldn't say it was real good either, the preamps aren't what they are cracked up to be and the FX are weak. I also have a Peavey SRC6024 which is suppose to be there pro board, I like the mixer just fine other than it's huge, I only use it when I need the extra channels. Now comes the Allen & Heath 14-4-2 MixWiz, what can I say, it's got those great Allen Heath preamps, great EQ section, just very nice sounding and extreemly flexible board. Last but not least is A Yamaha EMX5000-12, this one is a powered board, nice controls, and inputs, 500 watts per side at 4ohms, yes thats right 1000 watts of power, it has not one but 2 completely assignable SPX 90's fx built into it( not a full blown SPX 90 but some of the more useful fx from them, same engine), a small but very useful EQ, a very handy board, with Yamaha build Quality, hard to go wrong. In any case when I DJ or KJ, guess which board I use, yupner the Yamaha. Just to easy to setup and get going not to.I've even rented it out several times to very satisfied customers as part of a system. By the way the EMX 5000 has been replaced by they 5014C and the 5016C, they added compression and a few other goodies, still a great easy to transport and set up board. There, I said it and I'm not ashamed LOL
