He was feeding his outboard pre directly into his mixer pre via 1/4"-XLR cable

He needs to come out of the outboard pre and into the board at line level.

If he is coming out of the Servo Balanced 1/4" of the C Valve, and into an XLR mic input on his yahmee, it should work like downtown. The output of the C Valve according to the diagram on page 14 of his owners manual, is servo for low or high Z. They show a diagram on page 14 with this setup. Like karyoker said..it's ground trouble most likely. Try it in a different board, with a different TRS~XLR cable, and see what happens is my first suggestion at this point. Let us know how you make out Jim. :oh yeah:

I'll look at the pin assignments, and let yall know how he made up my cable. I can use a VOM if I have to. Thanks for all help so far. Yall are WAAAAAYY above my head on this stuff. I can test cable, and re solder, but thats about where my knowledge base ends on this one!!  I'll post what I find in the morning before I go to work.

Try a cable with XLR on both ends.
he can't, the Samson C Valve, has only a 1/4" TRS "Tip/Ring/Sleeve output. No need to adapt it to make matters worse.

Yes I realized that after looking closer, we were actually talking about another unit before he went this route - that was the one I was thinking of.

Agree strongly about the no ground lifts.

Yes, I had asked Lon for a recommendation for getting a "pre", and then didn't follow his advice! I should have! I found the C Valve locally for just a few more bucks than the ART, and bought it instead.

I called the local dealer and he said I had 10 days to return it if I'm not satisfied, so this gives me a little headroom to troubleshoot. :thinkin:

I'm gathering my meter and clip on leads to do some checking on the patch cable first. I'll post back later this morning with my findings.

Thanks, Jim.

Probelem solved.  Finally found a block diagram for that mixer. It has a mic/line switch on the mic channels. It needs to be in line position with the pre plugged in or you will get hum. I did have him switch to the 1/4" input it has a 10db attenuator pad and I wasnt sure if the switch worked with the xlr input or not.

Thanks for the help Karyoker :D , and everybody here. I appreciate the help so much. Now that the hum issue is resolved, I can move on to "how to use a pre"...!

Yep, like I said, you need line level coming into your mixer, and you can't then input that into your mixer XLR, it's gotta go in at either an insert or a line input.

Glad you found it!
