This thread is in response to Murlimans strange thing happened and Chucks thread he started today. The first time I sang in public and knew I would do it the rest of my life was in a 2 room school house in northern colorado. I sang 2 songs Cool Water and Tennessee Waltz. The year was 1947 (nope 1948). Since then I have sang in many countries and bars. With bands mariachis or just pickers or players.

When I left the farm I knew 2 kinds of music old country and fifties rock although I had a lot of 40's music branded into my mind. Genres do not enter my mind I can do Patsy Clines Crazy like Louis Armstrong would do it. Good music is like love it knows no boundaries nor favors any ethnic group To apply a genre to a certain ethnic group is naive and indicates an immature lack of appreciation for all music. This is a post I made several years ago and would like to repost here again I call it the music lesson and it truly is one of those nights that was priceless


The Music Lesson:  

"The first year of the sixties was probably about the worst time to go into the military. But times were good, a man or woman either one could work forty hours a week and support the family before the lawmakers convinced everybody that they were responsible for the economy. We had the best music in the world Johnny Cash E P and all in between. With two A M radio stations you could get the best country or rock. At two in the morning right after a drag race Shreeves Port L A was kinda good too.

The bands in those times were country that could rock and rock and roll bands that could play country but all managed to play a couple of gospels sometime during the night. They started setting up with wierd lookin geetars leaning against the amps and I dont know whether it was the booze or all the gals in tight jeans but god we rocked.

About four years later I found myself with about five other sailors in a little bar in France on the southern coast. We were yearning for Trader Vic's in Portsmouth and a band who could really rock doin Long Tall Texan and others. There was only us the barkeep and a few old Frenchmen who would pounce on the cig butts we were snuffin out and smoking them in their pipes.

An old man walked in with a very old violin and threw his tam on the bar which we found out was to collect the few lira for entertainment. Bobbie Darr, a Texan looked at me and said oh god we got to listen to this crap now. After a couple of songs I didnt have clue what they were, I said I'm gonna hit him with Wild Side Of Life. I walked up put a dollar in his hat and belted out You woodnt read my letter if I wrote yuuuo. All of a sudden I thought there was a fiddle player out Memphis or somewhere for he kicked in the best country fiddle moanin you ever did wanta hear.

We sang evey song we knew leaned some Medditranean stuff and even when we were doin cattle call and yodeling and screamin even the old guys were screamin and laughing and crying..I sat down awhile to catch up on the drinking and he played songs that made me weep, laugh and feel emotions that one seldom ever feels. He opened our heart and gave our soul wings. It took one whistlin and a couple of us humming but we taught him Orange Blossom Special. I dont know what I'd give to listen to him play just one more time.

And when we were walking back to the ship I realized that my appreciation for music had changed forever. I dont hardly classify or put music in specific genres. If it's good it's music.
And it dont make any difference if it's comin out of a big array or from an old violin if it makes your soul fly it's music That old man gave me a music lesson....."

I dont think people should get rich (decent living yes) selling producing or singing music. I always gave it free and got back 1000 times what I put into it. It has lifted me out of depression been with me in crisises and given me a lifetime of pleasure and without it some  roads would have sometimes been unbearable. Not to mention the highs and friends that has accompanied me along the way.. Without music I would have been nothing..It's been a good ride and I pray that maybe it will last another 20 years. Thats my story....

Ollie, what you need to do.... is have a few beers, set up your recording equipment, then just ramble on all night recording it. Then pass those recordings off to someone who likes to write.... (hmmm... there's a few here, Lol)

Now, all we need to do is think of a title for this book of yours:)

True,  Forgot about Amazon.   Did that specifically start as a book store and branch off into a "buy anything you want" venue ?  That was a fortune venture for somebody too of course,  Dang,  Wish I thought of Ebay first,  I wonder how much capital the concept cost the founder.

I dunno. You can certainly buy lots of stuff there though. I'm sure that's how it happened, a *bookstore gone wild* type of thing. Kind of a cool place though, you can find some rare cd's there often.



I love Ebay. I just have to limit my time there. I want everything I see. I haven't actually purchased too much there, but I used to go on these bidding frenzies, then I'd sit back and read my email notifications and think "holy crap, if I win ALL of those bids, I gotta come up with $500 real quick". So I just don't allow myself to go on there and browse. I did, however, just purchase 2 LP's. I had been telling Odie about an old song by Loretta Lynn, kind of an unknown one, and he found the LP for sale there... same LP I listened to as a kid, I recall most all the songs on it. So, I got 2 of them for under $10.  :dancin:  

You can find literally anything for sale on that dang site.

Charmin, Yeah.. Thing about Ebay is it's not the place to place a spontaneous bid without scrutinizing description.  If a person has the time to comb thru fine print,  read sellers history and feedback %, S&H descriptions, and KNOWS their market it can't be beat (at least for certain vintage and obscure items).
