We went  through the biggest tornados in cheyenne history The northern sky was filled with 3 that stretched from west to east. They needed  a CE at the small Tv station in Sterling co so I was elected. I moved a house trailer on premises on the high ridge with a 500 foot tower and 110 feet of tv antenna We were putting out 100KW (low vhf) and an FM putting out 300 KW.

One aft about 4 (news run at 5) a bunch of big black clouds moved in an started swirling I was at home but I knew I had to go over because the transmitter would start overloading and shutdown. (power lines slapping together) I walked out of the trailer and hear sssssshhkka sssssshhkaaa The guy wires (3" woven cable) had 2 foot fireballs dancing up towards the antennas. The hair On my arms and head was sticking straight up. I stood there for a few seconds in awe knowing my life was in the hands of god.

Drops started sideways like Bill says I dashed into the transmitter room and we all lasted thru the ordeal. No lightning (much) but a high concentration of high power static electricity..It is something one cannot put into words The smells and senses of something more powerful than ever experienced.

Doesn't that mean you were found as a conduction source by lightening ?

The weather here has been awful this year. We have already surpassed our annual rainfall total by something like 4 inches.

So I have a question to pose to you all:  I have 3 trees that have been hit with lightening since May.  All in my yard. Keep in mind I live in a residential area with an average sized yard. What do you think the odds are of this happening again. I am going to attempt to find out how many trees and how many lightening strikes per year either in the state or in North America to see if I can figure it out.....

I wanted to see if I would have better odds of winning the lotto or getting another tree struck by lightening.

Added later:  I was able to find a cool chart that tells the average number of strikes per day for my area.  That number is six... Bit I can't find anything on how many trees there could possibly be.. Maybe someone could help????Please???

We have had so many fatal hits of lightning here that the town put in lightning sirens to warn people when lightning is present. I think lightning hits are more prevelant than most of us think. Unfortunately we have lost 2 children to lightning in the past few years.

We waited and watched, but saw nothing. I think we are to close to the city. To many clouds and city lights mucking things up.

We have a decent amount of light pollution here too,  but last summer there were a few meteorites that were VERY bright and close... It was surreal.  Although you'd miss most of the meteors,  a few we had would've shown in even light conditions. But the wait wouldn't be worth it with too much light pollution
