I'm a newbie and I'm using Cool Edit pro 2.0  Sometimes I get lucky and I can actually record my voice plus the soundtracks from my JVC MV303. my biggest problem is how to come up with an mp3 file and under 3MB. The song I recorded "It had to be you" totalled 7.74MB. Help...---...

When you go to FILE - Save AS

right under File Name..

see the "Save as type"? make sure that says

mp3PRO (FhG)(*.mp3)

but WAIT!  Don't hit save yet...

Click the OPTIONS button there..

This brings up the "encoder options" screen.

Mine are saved as CBR and MP3 ... (i don't use the mp3PRO some people do)

see the drop down box? where it says 192Kbps, 44100Hz Stereo (8.8:1)
click that.. try saving it to a 128Kbps, 44100Hz option

(make sure your sample rate in a lower drop down box says 44100 Hz.. that seems to be the most compatible.. otherwise sites that use a flash player will speed you up to chipmunk sound when you upload)

Ok.. now hit OK.. and the Save button..

Now check your file size.. it should have decreased by quite a bit unless your song is 10 min long..

if it's still too big.. keep going down, but try to stay at the 44100 Hz options

I'm really lost now Foxe. Before I can proceed with the mixdown and save, I have to record something and I can't record anymore. God I'm so stupid. This is frustrating. I'm trying to assign microphone in track one and cd soundtrack in track 2. I can only get one in (microphone only or soundtrack only) and it's in both track one and track 2

lol @ karyoker lol great minds think alike ;)

ok well those are two different things.. you said your main problem was file size.. that happens as you SAVE the file.. not as you're recording and that's what I answered lol

ok.. well.. first you need to "rip" the song off the cd and put it to your hard drive.. then use the INSERT button on the multi-track view to put that backing into track 1..

then hit the "R" box beside track 2.. and start singing (check your record settings of your sound card mixer or windows mixer to have it set to record mic in or line in.. which ever you're plugged in as.. not "stereo mix" or "what you hear")

then press the Red circle on the bottom left corner to start recording..you should hear the track in line 1 playing.. and you sing and can see your wave in track 2

Clear as mud?? that's the start.. I'll see if I can find some of the sites I used to learn it for you ok??
