Anything at this point...
Between the cost (roughly $5 a pack at best) and having a little one I wanna be around for, my motivation to quit hasn't ever been this strong

Quote: my motivation to quit hasn't ever been this strong
Keep trying. It took me quite a few attempts, strong motivation is a good thing.. I suppose somewhere along the way during my last attempt I just got used to having something else in my hand to fidget with and knew although uncomfortable when not smoking, cigarettes were dangerous and were making me sick, I drank a lot of coffee, and diet coke instead, substituted the cigarettes with other less dangerous habits and eventually just forgot to start smoking again. When you consider how abrasive smoking was the first time you inhaled, realize that getting used to such an irritant isn't a good thing. It just has to be your time to quite I suppose. None of us going into an attempt really know that THIS time we attempt to quit, will be the last time we smoke (when looking back) in over 20 years. August 14th will be 27 years without alcohol or any illegal substance. One day enforced the next, one year become devotion to go longer, and after about 5 years restarting just wasn't an option. Yet can we quit an addiction for the rest of our life ? Why project; We can't know..

I see you all had a glowing success rate this last time :( Yeah, it wasn't the right time I guess, try again. If at first you don't succeed it wasn't your time to quit.

I agree Kappy - I've quit before for yrs at a time. I never smoked when pregnant or breast feeding (leave that one alone perverts).
It always took a few times of trying until I finally quit. Now I know also not to have just one. It's like being an alcoholic. No matter how awful that first cigarette was after I've quit, I started smoking again.
I was talking to Johnny about quitting next yr. With the new laws in Illinois I won't be able to smoke while at work. Starting in Jan. that will be 99% of the day. I figure that would be a great time to quit because I won't be able to smoke anyway. I have to admit it is a bit scary. That is a real stressful time of yr for me. I would hate to think I'd turn into a beotch.

Just realize it's one of the toughest addictions of all substances (rated around #3) and withdrawal is real, and KNOW what to expect. Prepare for a withdrawal period, Get involved with smokers groups, even have sponsors, I think the mistake many make is to assume it's JUST a bad habit... It's a real physiological addiction, so if prepared and aware of how the mind plays tricks once a person has an addiction, you won't be as likely to cave in to unkown affects of the withdrawal period (which lingers quite awhile), that is the problem of course, those of us that were addicted to hard substances in the past had hospitals and medication to help us thru the initial acute detox period.. 100 mg of Librium and other meds pretty much helps the shakes and interdose anxiety of the alcohol addict... Cigarettes however aren't an addiction many go inpatient for support with, hence it's a strong addiction you are alone with. Probably one of the toughest besides compulsive eaters probs.. THe blessing today I suppose is the indoor cleanair acts which don't mean if you are trying to quite, coworkers are no longer blowing smoke in your face torturing you.

Perfect timing Johnny !!! My time of enjoyment is going to be over at the end of this month !! I have some health issues that are forcing me to quit but forcing is ok with me because what I will be gaining ( or losing ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif) ) is ALOT better than a cig after dinner ya know ?! Thanks for the tips ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif) Hope all is well with everyone here I havent been around much because I am starting a new chapter in my life & its taking almost every ounce of willpower I have to get things done so I can move forward. But know that I miss everyone here so much ! all around ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Well, in the 22 years I've been smoking, I've tried to quit nine different times...
The last time I tried, even with the patch, I DID get surly and cranky...it was so bad in fact, that my division officer ORDERED me to go smoke a cigarette trying to improve my attitude lol
Anyways...they're expensive, nasty, I don't enjoy 'em anymore, and as a smoker I'm a member of the ONLY minority it IS legal to discriminate against...
Time to do it???
Whadya say Sharon? Should we all go for it?

Sometimes we need a complete change. Behaviour modification often works that way. To move ahead there are things we most let go of, associations as well

The fear of gaining weight is a factor in deciding to stop smoking for many smokers. For what it's worth, I would suggest counting calories along with excercising. "A watched pot never boils", and limiting your calorie intake to between 2000, and 2500 calories will insure you of not gaing weight. Even if you don't lose weight, as long as you stay the same, it's is a victory. It's simple math, but you have to be honest with yourself,,,,and yes cookie and potato chip crumbs do count as calories. It doesn't matter what you eat, but try to eat foods that give you more nutritional bang for your calorie buck. Anthing less than 2000 calories can be counter-productive, and result in failure. Calcium is important, and they have known for a while, that calcium from a natural source, is much better than supplements.......hey....just my two pennies........

True,
Usually 20-30 lbs is put on pretty quicky following the cessation of smoking. I felt so embarrassed at my 20th HS reunion which was shortly after I'd quit, I had to tell the other classmates I was preggers !
