Hello everyone,
For some reason, a month ago I became interested in maybe trying to set up Karaoke on my computer for fun ... and even recording videos.
My problem is, i have absolutely NO idea how to do this.
Can somebody help me out? Is there some sort of a step by step instructional? (I couldn't find any).
I'm guessing 1st, I would need a good mic. Only computer mics I found were the ones that cost 12-15 dollars at computer stores. Can somebody just recommend a decent brand/model that I can buy that will produce GOOD sound?
Second, I guess I need Karaoke music? Can somebody tell me where to get good quality music (seeing as I can't play an instrument).
Third, I think I need a webcam to record the video. (I already have one of these).
Fourth, I think I need software that will let me play the music as well as add my singing in? (I'm not sure how this works at all).
And Lastly, I think if i record the sound file using the software, and I record a video using the logitech software ... then i would need another piece of software that puts the two together right?
Please help. Thank you so much.

several questions...
1.) welcome to the forum.
2.) you give no information on the computer or recording capabilities you currently have.
3.) you should be aware that recording singers is against copyright violations.
4.) yes to have a karaoke show of any kind, you need karaoke music. I'd check the links to the far left and at the bottom of the list first. They're the site sponsors.
5.) I wouldn't dream of using a computer mic to record singers. you're best bet is to use an outside mixer that hooks up the karaoke music either coming from the computer, or from a regular cdg player. (karaoke is on cdg discs... cd+graphics). Then pipe the output of the music and mic results to either the computer and know how to record sound that way, or go straight to a cd recorder.

Hello knightshow.
I'm not sure what my ... capabilities are.
When I say recording singers... I mean, I want to sing and record myself or my friends so that we can watch it later. Not people I don't know online.
Okay, so I know that I need the karaoke music and where to get it now. I will get it from the links on the left hand side.
Can somebody link me to a microphone that they recommend? I have NO experience with music or any music equipment. I don't mind just buying what people recommend because it will be a better choice than the one I make. (within price range. just one that is best bang for the buck will do fine, unless somebody experienced tells me otherwise.) If you can't link me, a name and model number would suffice. I will look for it myself on google to buy.
So, if I have the music and a mic (after somebody recommends me one), what is the next step?
I can't just simply play the music and sing right? There must be some sort of software that sets this up? Again, I really don't know how this works. Step by step instruction would be greatly appreciated.

graphix,
if you go to the links on the left, many of them also have microphones. Some of the online retailers also have "reviews".
also, check out the various threads on here... look at the "wireless mics" thread and others. Many folks, including micky above me here, have recommended mics.
if you mean to play the music on the computer, yes you need certain software. If you mean to play the cdgs off a player, then no you don't need any software. It has the hookups to the televisions.
How you want to play and singto the music can be as vast as a $40 player that hooks up to your television, or something that goes into the thousands of dollars.
Tell you what. Tell us what you're experience is with karaoke, no matter how benign, and then tell us what you want to spend. Again, check out the links on the side... they have complete systems...
Or you can use Audacity, a free software to sing on the pc. You can record on your pc using that software... but that's a whole nother subject!
As for recording videos, one thing you might want to take into account might be a streaming karaoke site. These are membership sites where they have the music already, and you just hook up your mic system to your computer, and sing along. Along with a webcam, you can have your videos then...
Best of wishes to you!

As the others have suggested, thats a lot of questions to handle all at once. I will confine my input to what I understand the best out of the questions. All I would say at this point with the information you have given is here is a link to in my opinions one of the best ways to get anything analog onto a computer, I use this device for numerous applications. The Omega enables you to use a regular pro style mic as well as allows for line inputs and even midi capabilities, might be more than your looking for but as a mentioned very versatile and very high quality sound. As far as low cost mics, I've never used them myself but I have heard others on here mention that the Behringer mics are a good bang for the buck alternative.

please note, I endorse no particular store, just showing for reference, you'll have to look for the best deal. I hope I have been of some help. I'm sure the others will have suggestions also, good luck.

okay, i guess i'll make it simple.
here is a video of someone singing on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT8LRWfh1e0
let's say i wanted to make a video of myself, except instead of me playing the guitar, i'm using karaoke music. (because i don't play an instrument).
so, how do i go about doing that?
that's all i want to be able to do.
i want to do all of this on my computer. no TV. no CDG.
if that is too hard to answer, then forget about the video part.
all i want to do, is download karaoke music, sing into a mic along with the music, and record it as a sound file, and then replay it later.
thanks for the mic suggestion. 20 dollars? that's really cheap. i thought a decent mic would be expensive. the reason i can't give a price range for this equipment is because i don't know how much they really go for. if you asked me what kind of computer monitor to get, i could tell you that you could spend 200ish dollars on an LCD and it would be fine, but since i don't know anything about music equipment, i don't know where to start. if i can get myself singing with the quality that i hear in the video i posted above, that would be perfectly fine for me.

On that young man's video, the microphone he's using... basically, that's what's known nowadays a setup as a "podcaster"... do a search on ebay for podcaster or webcam, and check out the serious stuff that they have out there. Don't be fooled by low prices... those are gonna be the cheaper equipment. May work or may not... but I wouldn't recommend going really cheap!
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Samson-C01U-USB-Computer-Studio-Condenser-Mic-CO1U_W0QQitemZ130139506343QQihZ003QQcategoryZ133012QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem">THIS one looks good!</a>
Usually really good webcam (5 megapixel or higher) for the video, and they record on anything from windows media or .wav (sound recorder), or audacity, or go on up to pro-type of recordings. Most of the newer webcams come with pretty decent software!
"Creating Video on CDs" such as videoediter works well enough.
