Ask them to give you a tax-write-off-charitable contribution statement indicating the $$ value of your time and services contributed. You can then claim that amount on your tax return. Ive been doing this for the last 3 years with the Oregon Special Olympics for contributed professional photographic services at the Bite Of Oregon, Private Bite Political Fundraiser Event and the Portland TrailBlazers Street Jam held at the Rose Garden and Memorial Colliseum. I provide the Special Olympics with the photography then give them an invoice for each event's services $$ value and they issue me a tax-charity certification letter. That how I paid for my new 1500 $ digital camera--from the tax deduction letters.

Bottom line---always take the charity gigs----then claim them on your tax return and also benefit from all the future leads and contacts you make while there.

One of those shots I took at the Street Jam even showed up used on the place mats u get on your tray when you go to eat at McDonalds around Portland!!

Youd be AMAZED at some of the contacts you can make handing our business cards at charity events.

yep I too do charity events or freebies for friends becos of the benefits...mainly gigs from gigs. I have never yet not had a gig from a gig. Last week I did a gig at the last minute for a reduced rate and if it all comes to pass I will get 8 others from that gig at my normal fee

Yup, if you get audited you will indeed have to pay it back, plus interest and penalty. I donate about 100 hours a year at a school -- at my rates it would be like working for
a living.

A little bar here does an annual labor day MS benefit. Bands and Kj's fill for 2 or 3 hours and have a ball.  They put up an outside stage and a great big awning. Barbeque and sell food and sell stuff people donate.

These are functions that band members bond with karaoke singers and KJ'S. Band members will sometimes come a show sing a couple and maybe promote one of their events.

No matter what business you are a healthy participation in a function like this results in gigs or customers down the road.

I do benefits, charities, and nursing homes all the time. Both with the band and KJ. I won't do a freebe drunk party, but i will do a couple hours for Jerry's Kids. And some of the most heart warming KJ things i've done, are for the elderly, and our area "Special Kids" dance. Just to see their faces, and smiles makes it all worth it. We also did the karaoke for the "Relay For Life", we did it after our kj gig. I think we started at 3:30am and went till around 5am.

I'm really enjoying your photography Jerry.  I need to check out that particular Olympus Camera.  Not sure if it's a SLR or point and shoot digital but it takes nice photos;  This particular pose is clever. Did you come up for this pose idea ?  Pretty good shot
