I do have a slight disadvantage now. A few months ago I took an audio test at the VA and about 3kc it drops considerably plus a lot sf shooting with no ear muffs LMAO

I believe the distinction being made is “home” vs. PA speakers…potentially damaging home speakers that are not “rated/designed” for live vocals.

That leads me to the question "what's the technical issue with running live vocals through home speakers in a home environment?".

It's obvious that the SPL required for live sound in a venue would kill home speakers, but at "home" SPL, shouldn't home speakers be OK?

Or does the dynamic range of live vocals, cause the risk of damage to home speakers, even at "home" SPL?

Well Adam, I guess I'd have to say the main difference is that most (not all) home type speakers lack a compression driver which projects higher frequency's efficiently. Most home speakers probably use some sort of a soft dome tweeter that can produce high frequency's but not in a way that would be friendly to a live voice( I would think it would probably distort easily) Also for the most part the speakers in a home enclosure has no where near the travel of a speaker used in a PA type enclosure. In short, I think that the average  home type speaker could do it, but not well and not for long. Just my thoughts.

The issue with home speakers is durability rather than efficiency. Most home bass speakers have foam surrounds, that just can't take the cone excursion when vocals are run through them...particularly during peaks.

I dont know Guess I havnt bought any of this modern stuff My home system is an old Sony 150 watt amp. I can use it in small venues and get by with it however it doesnt come close to the main system. The best home system we ever put together was with a pair of JBL 10 G2's.

One can over drive an amp with bass or extreme high frequency feedback or anything from 20 to 20 kc. If the amp is clipping with vocals then turn the mic gain down....Bass will destroy a speaker alot sooner than any other audio range. I would not buy a home stereo system that I couldnt play music on. Will the singers on my old 331/3  albums with their vocals blow my speakers? I have put Bogen PA systems in open fields To me an amp is a amp !!! I guess I wont be buying a home stereo system whatever they are.

The problem is with a home system, do you get the chance to turn the gain down? Might be too late already. Plus, most people don't understand gain...at least not people just starting out in this...

Londonlive, you are just downstream of me, i live just north of Muskegon. I have used many old machiens, An Ecoplex, a Guild Copy Cat, remember those copycats with the exposed tape heads that got dirty all the time? My first stomp box was an old electro-harmonix original small stone, not this reissued stuff, and a fuzz face original. Boy back then we really thought it was cutting edge technology fur sure. But on this speaker, and watt business, i stand by my point in chief:
Quote:
Generally, if you drive speakers near their power limit, you can expect failures after awhile...that just goes with the territory. It's really hard to come up with meaningful data unless you know how the speaker is going to be used, as program material varies greatly with the type of material and the way that it's played.

I talked with my good friend Mike Brown from peavey electronics {a fellow pedal steel guitar player and friend}. They test a speaker under the worse conditions you can think of in the lab, and if you will read the first few words of my above statement, it pretty much says it all. Generally, if you drive speakers near their power limit, you can expect failures after awhile...that just goes with the territory.
I don't care how you test them in a lab, under certain conditions, if you push it for extended periods of time, at or near it's rated output, bang.....

Quote:
Too often people buy all this fancy "bolt on" stuff only to be disapointed with the result, because the sound system itself is at fault.

That is so true karyoker....
And as far as tube amps go, i told you before that i love my black face deluxe and twin. Anyway, i once heard a young fellow in a club in St Paul, he was playing a tele through a black face Fender twin, rated at 85 watts RMS, a ear wax melting volumes, he ripped the heart out of a SRO 12". While looking the situation over, and between his sniffles he proclaimed, ....the guy at the music store said that the  SRO was rated at 120 watts RMS, he's an idiot....i turned as i was walking out the door and said.....my foolish foolish friend.....You're the idiot.  :oh yeah:

Dennis...those are great speakers, EV has always made great speakers. The black label is a fantastic speaker for guitar. Trouble is, they just aren't voiced for Pedal Steel. I am using the Peavey Black widow 1501-4 Shallow Basket. The industry standard for pedal steel for almost 30 years. But for guitar a good EV is hard to beat.

Dennis, this one is for you. But first, I'd like to apologize to Ultaming, I feel like we kinda got a little carried away on his post. I was rereading all the posts on this topic and ran across your comment about Mackie boards, don't get me wrong, they are good, I've used or owned the Mackie, Peavey, Behringer, the Yamaha and a few others over the years. If you are as picky about sound as your love for the EV speakers ( and they are by far one of the best out there) indicates , do yourself a favor and try and get your hands on a Allen Heath mixer to play with. They are nothing short of amazing. I picked one up about three years ago because the price was just to good to refuse and I'd been hearing " you just got to hear the preamps on those British boards"  for about a hundred years. In short, they were'nt kidding. They have far more control than any board I have ever used. I used to have to boost the bass on my driverack by six db using a Peavey SRC 6024 which is one of their Premier boards, with the Allen heath, I had to reconfigure the driverack because I was no longer trying to compensate for the short comings of the mixer. In any case, check them out they are by far the best board I have ever used. The one I have is a Mix Wiz 14:4:2 DX2 Plus. Fantastic preamps and the options on routing just never end.

For live sound I work with an Allen & Heath GL4000 32 channel 8 buss, one of the best sounding boards i've used, but for karaoke Mackie is my main choice.  Sounds good, gives me all the features I need, don't cost an arm & a leg & service is right up the street   .

Sorry, I didn’t get back on line until this morning.

I left work at 5:45 last night, and headed to Minneapolis on I94, only to be stopped in traffic as the I35 bridge collapsed at 6:05 PM. I was very lucky, as I was headed to I35 and across the bridge that collapsed. My daughter crossed over the bridge about 10 minutes before the collapse. This is a terrible and tragic event for the people of the Twin Cities and the state. This interstate is the main artery north to south into and out of Minneapolis. It connects the northern suburbs of St. Paul and south Minneapolis and the southern suburbs. The location of the collapse is just as you enter into downtown Minneapolis from the north or come out of downtown from the south, with the University of Minnesota on the east side and downtown to the west. This is probably the most traveled roadway in the cities. My heart and prayers go out to the people involved.

Hi Ollie, glad to meet you.

I understood the chain pulling. It’s all cool.

Just remember, you were a kid once too.  :D

If we had enough money, we could put the ultimate system together for sure. Wish I would have stayed with the business back in the day…I had to eat tho. :D

Steel guitar is one of my favorite sounds. I love old country, because they used steel guitar more. Plus some of the greats played then. I would think the EVM-12L would be a good speaker for steel with the brightness…the one thing about the EV is they are pretty much bullet proof. At 300 watts RMS, it’s pretty hard to over power them. That link I put up shows 300 watts at 16 ohms. The one bad thing about them is they weigh a ton. If you got a 4-12 cabinet, you need a crane to move it.

Now I’m going to have to check out Allen Heath. Will I need to take out another loan? The wife will kill me…

Ultraming,

Did we ever answer your original question? I think you should look at a decent set of PA speakers. You need to balance the load, so don’t just do one.

Take a look at these:
