All this while I thought that Gretchen Wilson is a MALE country singer, until I listen to the song, Come To Bed. The name look male.
Anyone have similar mistake...

Yep,
All this while, I thought most of the Karaoke in the US was like the CAVS versions I listened to which were at times actual band with vocals panned out, or something done in Asia with the CAVS stuff. I never paid attention to other backing I heard in SS, just the vocals... So I didn't realize most Karaoke used coverbands.

Until this morning That name look like a male name to me. She is not played over the radio in my country and I only have seen her name in the forum and SS and have never listen to her song; until this morning. I had a shock of my life listening to a female singer. ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)

I suppose assuming a person hasn't paid close attention to her work, the name "Gretchen" to a person unfamiliar with certain western names wouldn't be quite so obvious as to it's gender.

The other name is Pat Benatar; I thought that name is also a male- as in Patrick. Until I listen to 'Shadows Of The Night'.

You are right Steven, the name 'Gretchen' is rarely seen in the East.

It's not a very common name in the Northeast part of our country either Jian. Names are cyclical, sort've fads that come and go in cycles. Different generations have different statistics of commonly used names. While certain names might've been popular during my grandparents generation such as
Mabel
Agnes
Bertha
Enid
They are used, but not commonly. Yet I only know about my general location. You'd have no way to know about Pat Benetars gender UNLESS you saw or heard the music. Pat can be either gender as can Sam, Leslie, and don't feel bad, there are quite a few non-musicians who still think Stevie Ray Vaughn is a female too.

Jian, How many Americans could tell a persons gender by their asian firstname ? Few would be accurate assuming they were tested. I see Japanese names, and I haven't a clue what gender the person is. Chinese names are MUCH harder of course. Nobody should be surprised that a foreign person isn't 100% accurate in telling gender based on name. It's not easy. When learning a language you learn words usually contextually. But names just stand alone, no context, and there are many of them.. They are different sounding words too. How would a person know ? In this country Adrienne is a female name, we wouldn't know your gender by seeing your name assuming the spelling was close.
Additionally, our "western" names are often not American in origin. Isn't Gretchen German ?

English names are not that difficult for me; at least most of the time. Asian names are impossible in some cases. Malay/Indonesian name are easy. Thai and Japanese; I have little knowledge. Chinese names are not that difficult, and so are Indian names.
