Haha... I've seen that on occasion. WHY do drunks think they MUST sing "Sold" (the Grundy Cty Auction song) or "Aint Goin Down Till The Sun Comes Up".?? LOL

Dennis - no disrespect but you missed the 1st post  which explained that I DO NOT wait for someone to finish playing a pool game. I took control as you say and gentle moved him down the rotation until he finished THAT GAME of pool ( 2 singers) .  To ME that seemed like a good decision .  This guy didn't like the fact that he had to wait 2 singers and walked out.  Sorry ! .

My biggest pet peeve as a KJ is prima donna SINGERS.

Sorry,

I didn't miss the post, just didn't put them together.

How about the person who comes up to sing and after you've started the song insists the music is wrong or it's the wrong song.  LMAO This one kills me. It is usually songs I've heard before and know there is nothing wrong with the version. Of course sometimes there is a little variation from the radio version, but not much. It's karaoke people  LMAO

One reason I would never go paperless.  You have it written down, they can't claim we put in the wrong song - it's there in their handwriting!

You misunderstood me, although you are correct in what you stated.

I'm not sure how to explain what I mean.

I put in the song they have requested. Say it is Redneck Woman by Gretchen Wilson. I cue the song up and it sounds different to them then the version they think they know and insist it is all wrong. Then I have this back and forth argument about it being the right song. Redneck Woman is Redneck Woman.

If they don't want to sing it fine, but don't blame me if you don't know it.

3). Drunk people who slobber the mics.

At one of the clubs I go to there is an Autistic guy that sings... and he slobbers quite a bit no matter what. They have a special mic cover just for him.  I think that is very considerate of the KJ....  And he is so cute singing. One night all the waitresses just happend to be wearing green shirts so he sang "It ain't easy being green"  The shocker was that he nailed it.....

Oh, sorry this is a gripe thread.. I agree with the slobbering drunks and pretty much everything everyone has said here....

Rude KJ's are not to be put up with either.. No reason to be rude to your patrons....Unless of coarse.. They asked for it by breaking the rules and such....

Well, I tell ya what...... I was a pretty rude patron last night:) I'm surprised somebody didn't kick my little karaoke butt.

There was a new KJ being trained, and... (this is not the normal "me", :D , but I was in a bit of a testy mood last night)... I decided right off the bat that I didn't like him. I hated that he was adjusting my mic (when he did I crammed the mic to my mouth, when he adjusted again, I pulled the mic a foot away and sang... some of you would have probably kicked me out of the joint... I was being a big brat on purpose)

When I got back to my table, I complained a bit too loudly about "the new guy".    He overheard, and a bit later started announcing on the mic for everyone to please let him know if we have a problem hearing while singing so he can adjust for us. THEN he had to come to my table and apologize to me in person. And problem is... I don't think the guy did a daym thing wrong. It was my mood that did it all. I apologized at the end of the night for being the world's biggest karaoke brat. It was all cool by then (atleast I think... maybe he dreads seeing me again??... time will tell) But he was a nice guy, professional, and a dang great singer too. (and yeah, kinda cute) *Muahaha*

I've never done this before, I'm usually instant friends with the KJ's wherever I go, cause I am NOT demanding and bratty. But something came over me last night, and that poor guy got the blame.

So, KJ's... I guess sometimes if you run across a brat like me on karaoke nite... a simple "can I do something to help out?" might snap them out of their bytchiness. Worked for me... I left feeling like a heel... and regretted letting my big mouth run away with itself. :(

(why I'm telling you this... I haven't a clue... none of you will want to meet me now) LOL

'fraid I can't help you out on that, Blue.

If I were running the system, and someone sat at their table complaining loud enough for me to hear, I'd probably go the exact opposite... I'd tell them that since I couldn't run a system to their liking, that there was the door.

I'll be the FIRST one to say though, that I thought he handled the complaint with better class than I could muster. Of course, it's been a long time since I was a fledgling newbie, but when you go to a new venue, new customers, you tend to have the newsies... finding the room sound levels takes a bit of time, sometimes there's odd echo effects (or none at all) due to accustics, new boards, etc.

Granted, it's the kj's responsibility to do that ahead of time when there's no customers around, but sometimes this just ain't possible, so there will be minor adjustments, even for those of us that have ran systems before.

When Tig and I worked together, I was always amazed at how quickly he picked up the subtleties of the sound levels of the room. He adjusted speakers for a gig of mine he ran once, apologizing for the forwardness of it, but you know what? He knew exactly what he was doing, and I was smart enough to shut my yap and let him do what he needed to do.

Oh, no, you misunderstand me .... that was my main point.

This guy was good. Not only did he run a good system, he actually kept his cool when I acted like a freakin' big baby, and he was very polite and courteous. MOST people WOULD have run me out the door. Now, perhaps I'm over exagerating the situation. I wasn't THAT bad, and only sitting one table away from him, it's not as if everyone in the bar even heard me.  But, I did act bratty and trash talk him, he did hear it... and he simply came up and apologized, and asked me to please let him know immediately next time if I wanted something adjusted. He didn't OWE me an apology, and it probably WAS adjusted right to start with. I said.. I was in a mood.. I'm sure I was looking for a fight anyhow.

It was handled very easily, and I give him a big kudos for that. He could have tried being a smart a$$ back... or skipping me...

I'm just saying, "you get more bees with honey than vinegar".... some of those old sayings have merit.

Now, granted, if I came in the bar and pulled this on him every night, I'd expect him to change his tactic. As it is, I'm pretty sure we parted friends:)

(he just met my bad side first, Lol)

And hell, I don't even HAVE a bad side. With catty women- maybe- but that's a whole other story. I've never encountered a KJ I didn't get along well with.

Haha, I wish I'd have gotten to one of your shows Matt, before you moved away. You'd know for yourself then, that that is NOT the typical me. Ask Kurt and Odie, they'll tell ya... It was just ONE off night for me, in all my karaoke years, but I think he did the best thing he could have. It shut me up, changed my mood, and I had fun the rest of the night. (and left the poor guy alone)

But yeah, like I said, MANY other KJ's would have taken offence and acted different. Maybe, part of the reason he acted the way he did was it's a new bar for him... he was new, everyone there knows me... including his boss KJ who was there- a good friend of mine. I imagine he wanted to make the impression that he can handle bratty people:)

(and I'm SO not bratty... just last night... so I'm gonna quit referring to myself that way, Lol)

Ive encoutered 3 in pdx that do it---one at a Nascar theme place in Gresham and the other the present KJ's at The Farmhouse on 82nd. Very annoying to listen to it.

Sounds like you're your own pet peeve Blue! :) LOL

How about when a bar advertises karaoke at 10:00pm and the KJ doesn't even arrive till after 10:30pm, so the show finally gets under way around 11:00pm...  now that's peeve material with a capital P.     Worse still.... same bar, following week....  there's a NYY game on, nobody in the bar is taking any apparent notice of it, certainly not listening to it,  but karaoke is delayed until after the game, around 11:30pm!  Message to KJ's... start on time or get a new job!

Can't agree more here, however I never understood such a late start to begin with - 10PM to start the party?  We have always started at 9 & there are some clubs around here that start at 8 - 8:30.

Now not defending the kj here, but often it's the bar that will MAKE the kj wait till after a game - especially if it's a home game - regardless of whether people are actually watching or not, i've been in & worked (shortly) these types of bars before.
I know I can't turn the game off if one is on - however, we can turn the volume down & get the show going anyway (unless it's like an important playoff or Superbowl/World Series game), the singers have to rely on the stage monitor to see the words.

I agree with Lonman.  It's not always the kj.  Where I'm at on Saturday's the owner cancel's karaoke if the TN Vols are playing football.  Being a big Kentucky Fan and not getting to work those nights is a double wammy for me. LOL   And he doesn't even have a big crowd because of it.  BUT, he's the owner.

Pocahontas?  LMAO  That's hilarious. Just yesterday, my favorite kj left me a voicemail wishing me a happy birthday, and I replied in another voicemail.....I love you too Pocahontas. LMAO
She's part Indian and German, with the visuals favoring the Indian.....yum yum.... LMAO
