I have been told that a "Karaoke" contest and a "Singing" contest are not one and the same.  I was just wondering if anyone has an opinion on this or if they can clarify what this actually means. I actually have an opinion, but i would like to see what everyone else has to say.

I don't really think there is a distinction between the 2 - a 'karaoke' contest IS a singing contest, certain contests DO in fact look for different things so one might be considered differently than another.  We have done contests where it was SOLELY based on your vocals & no entertainment value was judged in which the winner received a 5 song recording at a real studio then we've done contests where we were looking for not only vocals but the whole entertainment package in which the winner was the opening act for a major band.

Depends on who is running it?   I would say if a KARAOKE HOST is running a CONTEST it would include a LYRICS screen and it would be OKAY to view the lyrics
as you would singing KARAOKE !

A singing contest COULD mean it is more of a SINGING TALENT contest in which one would be expected to KNOW the words without any assistance and work the crowd giving more point values to overall ENTERTAINMENT than JUST vocal ability.

Karaoke contest is a singing contest but a singing contest is not always a karaoke contest; ie when the contest is done with a live band backing.

Even American Idol uses the tv prompters for words.  One show last year I believe they were behind the singer & you could see in on the floor next to the stage monitor.
Many bands use the monitors for their OWN lyrics now days.

Reminds me of the song 'Let's call the whole thing off'

If you go on a Karaoke you are singing. So to me Karaoke/Singing Whats the diff.

'That's Entertainment'

Hmmm....good topic. Once at a place I went to, they had a karaoke contest, I wasn't in it, but the singer was expected to sing without watching the lyrics screen. So, I guess you'd call that a singing contest, not a karaoke contest. The bar room and karaoke room were 2 separate rooms, and one dude lost too many points from going into the bar area while he sang....out of the judges view.

I guess there are no rules, cause they didn't even know how to run a contest. LOL

Funnest contest I ever ran was a 'Blind karaoke' in which it was basically how well do you know your song.  It was actually a lot of fun - people got into it, some did nail, but most were singing wrong verses in the wrong spots, going into choruses when maybe a bridge should be.  The singer was literally blindfolded on stage - so you did have to know the song pretty well (or at least THINKyou did)  LMAO .  Judged on basically timing & song accuracy.

Maybe the reference to a karaoke contest being different to a singing contest comes from the kaaraoke winners not always being the best singers in the contest, but the ones who provide the most entertainment/laughs.  Hmmmm, but come to think of it, Ameican Idol is definitely not a karaoke contest, but there the best singers/vocalists don't seem to win either!

Since karaoke means music without words...I don't think the screen is a mandatory thing. Most of the contests I saw that were karaoke did have 2 distinctions. One- you had to use a karaoke song(no acapella or acoustic numbers) And Two -they did count overall "entertainment value"...that meant that they wanted to see a show that included stage presence, costume, not looking at the monitor, and getting the audience to respond, and how well you could actually sing. I've seen many "singing contests" where the winner could sing-but I've had more fun watching paint dry that I did watching their actual performance. Especially at open mic nites. Just my opinion though....I'm sure there are many who feel exactly the opposite. They are just as entitled to their opinion.
