As a KJ it would be the a-holes who ask every song "hey am I next"? Or the even bigger rectums that try to switch my song slips to make themselves farther along in the rotation than they should be. And let's not forget the drunks...they have so many transgressions that need to be "forgiven" every night There isn't enough space to list 'em all.
As a singer... mt pet oeeve is a Kj who never says anything other then to call the next singer up. "NO personality at all. I also hate the ones who set the sound at the beginning of the night then never touch it again during the entire show. I also hate the ones who act like they are the star of the show.
How do the rest of you all feel?

Well as a KJ I'd have to say the people who come up to the mic & no matter what Ya do ya cant mix them right because apparently they think their chin can sing !! !! And when ya bring it to their attention to hold the mic closer to their mouth they STILL do it. UGH !!!
As a singer it would be two things filler music when the rotation is long & a rotation that is too long I went to a place one night & was there from 9 till 1 & sang twice. I was so po'd. I know thats not the Kjs fault but it still aggrevates me.

I'm with ya Paula, the buggers that are always askin' "how long til I'm up again" irk me to no end!!
And my solution to the lovely idiots who switch my song slips around to put themselves up front is to move them to the end of the line. Trust me when I say they're not half as p1$$ed off as I am, NO ONE messes with my stuff pmsl LOL

I'm SO with you on that one...I have a photographic memory and when they switched slips with me I just smiled at them and told them they might as well go on home because they weren't singing again that night and I thriew their slips in the trash. They usually learned their lesson and didn't try that anymore. I even had a few try to move their "friends" up - in those cases when I knew the "friend" had nothing to do with it- I politely told them to stop...or if they kept at it- I told them to leave as they had been obviously overserved" the bar owners were very supportive to me and gave me tremendous power in maintaining control of my shows. I was very lucky that way! I don't think I could have done a show if the owner weren't supportive of my to allow me to do things like that. I loved them though...they were like my children...naughty little 2 year olds at times... but still "family" Ya know?

I don't have much problem with people switching song slips while I've gone to the bar or the bathroom. I have found over the years that unruly karaoke singers are no different then unruly spoiled kids. And as such I treat them that way.
I use song slips but I also use MTU Hoster. They may switch slips but they don't have the time to or usually the knowledge to get on the laptop and move names around. When I get back and see that say, "Chrissy" has moved here self up to where she "thinks" she should be, I get on the mic and very politely say, "Chrissy , don't F@@k with the song slips!
As far as questions? I love the person who comes up WITHOUT a slip; AND, hasn't put one in yet; and wants to know "How many of these people are in front of me.?" I look down at the slips and then at them and (smile of course) say, "duh, all of them."
And my biggest pet peeve? Calling a singer up to the stage talking on the mic as they set up on the stage and then hand them the mic and the first thing they want to do, is yep; pat the mic head and ask if this thing is on? I say, Nope! Only works when I talk into it. HERE'S your sign!

I love it when they do that! Because they don't realize how I run the slips, if they would look at the computer screen that is viewable to them, they could see exactly where they are coming up. But they don't & they try to move the slip to the front thinking that is the next spot when in actuallity they just pushed themselves FURTHER away from where they would be. I will let them know that they just screwed themselves & if they keep their hands off, I MAY just slide them back to where they were. If I catch them doing it again, they don't sing anymore.

all the above !
Seriously I would say untrained newbies. These are the people who don't know the rules yet. No screaming in the mic or I turn you off, fill out your own song request slips, no I don't take bribes or move you up in rotation how often you bug me, no I won't allow you to swing the mic by the chord or lift the mic stands off the floor and hitting on me will only get you ignored - not favored LMAO
I'm lucky that I have mostly regulars and they are great to have sing because they know what I will tolerate and what I won't.
If someone is new and needs help filling out their first slip I don't mind, but after that they are on their own. I had a guy Friday night that said he couldn't read - ya right ha ha funny. I helped him with his first song request. Then he hands me a slip with a list of 6 songs with no numbers. Now I already explained to him he needs to do this himself, so when his turn came up I announced his name then said oh I'm sorry there isn't any numbers for the songs we'll have to wait until next round when you can have them looked up. Of course I could have said something when he handed the slip to me, but he was being such a jerk earlier I thought I'd teach him a lesson.
Later he was the guy bugging me to sing one more time before I closed. I said if there is time. Well there wasn't time and he insisted I stay open later just for him - NOT. Next time he comes in he'll know he can't push me around and hopefully won't be a bother.

As far as pet peaves with Karaoke hosts it would have to be music sets when there is tons of singers waiting, not setting sound, singing themselves every set when there is a lot of singers, playing favorites with rotation and letting people sing more than one song in a row.
Now I enjoy a KJ that interacts with the audience, but it isn't a must.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I HATE -- No, make that LOATH dancing sets in between rotations. And KJs who think a little too highly of themselves. Okay, you've got a nice singing voice. But no matter how good you think you are, I came to sing and listen to other singers, not listen to a one-person lounge act. I haven't come across too many of those, but when I do, it's a real turn off. I'll take no personality over big-head any day.

Karaoke host singing every time in a heavy rotation, for sure. When I ran across the host who sang *twice* to start every one, I ust left.
Of course when I am the host, that means I have to put my mouth where my mouth is and shut up. I am just an amateur, but I had a gig today. I sang the first song and a couple more when there were no singers early. After that, I sang a couple of times when it was four slow songs in a row with two lined up after them.
When there were no singers early, I said -- "Karaoke hosts have a threat which is so dire that they rarely bring it out. It is the nuclear weapon of the business. I know more than a hundred songs, and if no one comes up to sing I will start at the top of the list and work my way down it." Very shortly thereafter, the slips started showing up and we were off and running.

We have all but eliminated all the above problems. We rarely have drunks and our singers are very sophisticated and very talented. They have sang for 15 years or more. When the flow is going and when they are done we cant say anything cuz the crowds goin nuts. If they dont get much applause then they evaluate and learn and figure out what they did wrong. We are not there for ego trips or wannabe stars we are there to entertain.
The crowd determines the format They got tired of the same just karaoke thing week after week and year after year. I got totally burned out on it. If we get a big rotation going we can shift back in a heartbeat which is not often. Then the energy level dies and the crowd gets bored. (well lets get so&so up here ok lets give it up for so&so) (ever get tired of it? we dont sit there and jack our jaws and begging for applause about this time we have zztop gimme all your loving and flat hammering the bass in one second ) The drunks that want that sing sing sing and to hell with everybody else is across town. We have thrown most of the old karaoke rules out the window. We dont need them.. This is a job not a religion!!!

When you pick a song and turn it in and they give you a different version from what you picked. I am a DK kinda gal.. If that is what I turn in that is what I expect to sing.. Not the SC version because THEY think it is better.....

the singers that insist on tons of "echo", and then look at you when they sound like sh*t!
WE are the experts on how to adjust a song.
The ones that cup the mic wanting to make more echo ALSO drive me bananas!

There's a KJ at a bar I used to frequent who has every irritating quality in the book.
He sings every rotation, no matter how long the list is. And he's a Luther Vandross fan, so pretty much every night is going to include "Superstar" and "A House is Not a Home" (both over 7 minutes long). And no, he doesn't get them out of the way early in the night when there aren't too many singers.
His books are a mess, the main books must be 6 or 7 years old, then there are several other lists and smaller books with various updates. If the song you're looking for isn't in one book, you better check 3 or 4 others because it just might be in one of them.
He has certain people who he'll have stay onstage after they sing their song to do a spontaneous duet with him. Again, makes no difference how long the list is for him to do this.
Once upon a time he had a good rotation, used a white board, would stick new singers in about 5 songs ahead then alternate new and old singers. Now, I could follow one person for 2 rotations, then in the third rotation suddenly have 6 new singers between us, along with another turn for someone who has already sang since I did my last song.
It's probably been 3 years since he's bought any new music. When I asked him about it the reply was "if people want new music, they need to start tipping me more, that's what I use to buy discs". Discs are $15 - $25, he makes more than that in tips in one night so surely that's enough to pick up a new disc or two every now and again?
He doesn't seem to get the concept of doing the sound mixing at the beginning of the song. It's not uncommon for somebody to be halfway or more through a song and suddenly have the volume of the music or vocals increase or decrease fairly drastically.
Needless to say, I've stopped frequenting that bar on karaoke nights. And the worst part? Most of the bar thinks he's a great KJ. Nice guy? sure. Good KJ? not even remotely close.

Now I just love that. That is "by far" my biggest pet peeve. "tap/tap/tap"..Errrrrrrrrrrrrrr When that happens, which is certain to happen 4 or 5 times a night......they are seriously lucky I'm not armed!
Tinkermom...you would not like my shows..hehehe, but I will say this. If I had a good karaoke crowd and lots of singers...guess what, we're singing!
Another pp that follows very close is that even though a few of my regulars HATE karaoke.....to put it lightly, I have to put up with them bytchin' every single night. Why do you do karaoke, why don't you just leave the stuff at home & just bring the music? I have to tell them over and over again......If we have singers & and we always have a handful...WE ARE SINGING, PERIOD.

Pet peeves at shows, eh?
#1 is I have a couple of country music types that think the show should be all country. They come in, and want to be catered to. And, instead of saying something to me, they complain to the owner, who in turn feels compelled to say something to me. She's hardly ever at the shows to begin with, but man does it get my goat when she says ... "I've been getting complaints". I know the idiots that lodge the complaints and I WILL NOT change my show for those couple of people who feel entitled. My show spans all genres and will. I don't do the gigs for the money, I do it for the fun and I get a helluva lot more kudos than I get complaints. This owner ought to show up more often, she might realize the business that's generated from the large number of people I've turned into regulars.
#2 is those who come up and ask me to sing without filling out a slip. And when I ask them to write it down (so as to not forget in lieu of the 50 other things I've got going on at the time), they get irritated.
