Ok people, I need some help or direction...just had  the 6 DVD collection delivered today. Here is my question. How do I "rip" these videos to my computer. Any suggested programs to do this (preferably freeware) I would like them as individual videos if possible, possibly as avi or mpeg files....or if there is a better way let me know.
Thanks in advance,  Randy

You didn't specify which platform you are using (Mac or PC) or your OS. It's hard to answer a specific questions without all the facts.

Given that, I usually check out versiontracker.com for any freeware or shareware. You can do a search on that site and probably find what you are looking for.

Thanks eben, the platform is pc with win xp. I have figured it out. I can rip them individually with a multitude of freeware programs - only 1 at a time or I can buy a program called River Past DVD QuickRip which will rip all of them as individual files - 1DVD at a time. I am going with the second option as I can see the benifit of being able to rip other segments from just about any DVD for playback in either media player or winamp.  Thanks again.

Randy

You are welcome. For winXP platform, if you are going to pay for the software, I recommend Ashampoo Burning Studio to rip DVDs. It's really easy to use and I have ripped about 200 DVDs without any problems. Good luck.

I did get the program I mentioned ( River Past DVD QuickRip ) and it had even gone on sale since I first looked at it - so better yet! It worked like a charm...ripping all of the individual vob files (chapters) just as it said it would. This project is complete. :oh yeah:

How big is the file size of each song? The reason I ask is that I too have those set, but they are of vcd format and will be ripping them soon. Do you compressed the files?

The smallest around 93,000kb and the largest around 330,000kb with most in the 120,000kb to 170,000kb range.
No, I did not compress them.

Vob files are huge. I will covert my vcd disc to mpeg which will be about 10mb per min of song. I just got a new external HD for this. Thanks.

If converted to AVI the size would only be around 50mb each give or take. If I use any videos I always use AVI format. This also plays in ClubDJPro2 which I use when hosting.
