Yeah that's Reed Timmer, - nice footage. I've run into him a couple of times out in the field. One time my chase partner Gene and I pulled him and his crew out of a ditch as their truck had slid off because of mud. Reed's one of the more active, motivated chasers currently. It kind of comes and goes for a lot of folks. He actually chased into Canada which may occur more often as the global climate / warming begin pulling the jet streams further north more frequently.

Tornado kills 14, hurts 146 in China 58 minutes ago           [5AM   EDT  7-4-07]

BEIJING - A tornado ripped through two provinces in eastern China, killing 14 people, state media reported Wednesday.

Another 146 others were hurt and more than 800 houses were destroyed in Jiangsu province's Gaoyou city and in Tianchang city in Anhui, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

"High winds and heavy rain cut off power and telecommunications, ripped roofs off buildings and uprooted thousands of trees," the Gaoyou government said in a statement, adding that Tuesday's twister was the city's worst in 50 years, the report said.

The Gaoyou estimated its direct economic losses at $7.2 million.

Kappy we were under a tornado waring here about 4 this aft. One touched down about 10 miles north of greeley Here they track to the SE Im in a high rise south side on the 8th floor.  When the front hit ice cold winds started big black clouds and then it got dark.

The number one killer here weather wise is lightning. Then a super thunderstorm with several strikes within 1/2 mile.

The weather here has been awful this year. We have already surpassed our annual rainfall total by something like 4 inches.

So I have a question to pose to you all:  I have 3 trees that have been hit with lightening since May.  All in my yard. Keep in mind I live in a residential area with an average sized yard. What do you think the odds are of this happening again. I am going to attempt to find out how many trees and how many lightening strikes per year either in the state or in North America to see if I can figure it out.....

I wanted to see if I would have better odds of winning the lotto or getting another tree struck by lightening.


Added later:  I was able to find a cool chart that tells the average number of strikes per day for my area.  That number is six... Bit I can't find anything on how many trees there could possibly be.. Maybe someone could help????Please???

Probability is a tricky thing because NOT all events are subject to just mathematical odds.  Assuming you were never struck by lightening (as a person leading an average normal indoor outdoor lifestyle meaning not hanging around open plains and golf courses during storms etc) and you took necessry precautions when you possibly could odds of getting struck once in your lifetime are 1 in 600,000.  If you are a person that's been struck three times, there's something else going on. Odds are greater that such a person would be struck the third time I believe (because chances increase in favor of certain events recurring after certain data is established considering odds at winning at Powerball jackpot (matching 5 numbers  and Powerball) are  1 in 120,526,770  and will usually remain as such in the case of lottery winnings.  Lightening strikes certain areas repeatedly for a reason however. It's a phenomenon that happens for a reason.  3X indicates favorable conditions 


I don't believe there's a form of statistics and probability that can give you average odds since tree height, location, electrical charge all factor in. Has your yard ever conducted lightening prior to this year ? Three strikes since my in three separate storms ?   Three times since may and NEVER before in how many years ?   Still,  there's conductivity going on now, and it's likely you will be struck again at some point because there's a ground lightening seeks.

If three trees have been struck by lightening in your yard, odds are favorable that lightening WILL strike again, not that it will not. You are located in an area that conducts lightening (as compared to places that have yet to get struck) IOW it's not coincidental.  There's a reason it's happening.  Not prone to the same probability of "odds at lottery winnings".

3 separate trees,  3 separate storms..I've been here 7 years.  And this is the first year  for all this lightening in my yard. . Arrg!! I think I need to move.. However, I lived approx 50 miles from here about 10 years ago and the first week in that house a very large tree was struck by lightening. So could it very well be that the attraction is me??  I've always been fascinated with Spontaneous Human Combustion. Maybe it's coming for me <running around trying to find a place to hide>

I read about this phenonenon awhile back and thought of ball lightening, elderly people dropping cigarettes, murder, electrocution, but there's really nothing inside our bodies that can combust  and cause us to burn rapidly.  The wick effect would even take time.  Cremation is over 1500 degrees F.  There've never been eye witnesses at the time a person "Spontaneously combusts" that exclude actually catching on fire,  just forensive analysis of results.  



Or tall trees at a very high location.   Are your trees among the tallest in the immediate area ?   If-so that's your explanation.  buildings have lightening rods for that reason, as do all very high locations.  Lightening DOES strike tall objects such as trees and buildings.  Radio and television towers get struck MANY times per storm.

As mentioned, few of we New Englands have ever been in an actual "Quake", the Connecticut River valley is on a huge fault line and a monster is anticipated.

The rain has stopped in the DFW area. The areas of my yard that were flooded now look like it hasn't rained in years... All cracked and dry....Since the rain has stopped the air quality is just getting progressively worse everyday.  And I just watched the weather and they are forecasting 100+ temps for this week with Temp heat indexes close to 110 degrees.....

This is not going to be a fun week.  Air too heavy to breathe and not healthy to be breathing either.. I think I'll be staying inside ALOT...

I'm having probs too Sharon.  Heatwave and wicked headaches from the air quality up here as well.  Those of us with respiratory probs despite air conditioning, and air filters feel this stuff and react to it

As for your lightning strikes, at our old house in Indy, we had a huge poplar tree in the front yard that was hit by lightning and knocked down.  My step-dad and I cut it down the rest of the way, and a new little sapling grew out of the stump...

About 4 years later, this maybe-10 foot tree got hit by lightning again...

Lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place?  MYTH BUSTED!  :no:

I have lightning strike around me all the time. Wonder why?  LMAO

My friend Gene has been struck before. Also my chase friend David Drummond who is the web host of my web site has been struck.

On the day of the recent Mulvane tornado (few years ago in southeast Kansas) there was a guy in a van in front of me that got hit and injured by lightning. I found out about that one by watching a tv program on the Mulvane tornado and remembered that he was the guy that was driving me crazy cause he was driving too slow and I was trying to get around him on narrow, hilly, curvy 2-lane road near dark. The lightning that day from that tornadic storm was unbelievably  fast and violent. It was just constant cloud to ground strikes all around the mesocyclone area. I had big reservations about being in that, but continued anyway. I think the guy must have gotten hit just moments after I passed him. They said he had his window rolled down and had his elbow resting on the window base. Man, you can bet I was tucked up in my Tahoe and as far away from any metal as possible. No chance I was getting out of the vehicle around something like that though.

Lightning is one of the most dangerous, unpredictable, and nefarious threats facing storm chasers. Other primary threats are the roads themselves and other drivers, as well as flooding. Giant hail can be very dangerous as well especially when blown near 100mph horizontally (which it does on occasion & I have been in). The tornado is actually a ways down the list from the top as a threat. Death by tornado is actually very difficult, and takes some skill.
