you know Charm... you just hit on a VERY good thing. I have always told my friends how much I hate instrumental breaks in a karaoke song. There you are on stage twiddling you thumbs looking like a dork! There are SO many great songs out there and I won't do them  at a show ot ESPECIALLY in a contest because of the long solos. I feel very uncomfortable standing there saying that was out sax player..."chip" and in Micro chip! Duhhhhhh!

We should get a petition up and send it to the companies that produce track such as pocket songs, soundchoice, music maestro, priddis..etc and TELL them that long solos say more than 4 ot 6 measures just don't cut it and to leave them out when they make the songs. But...on the flip side... how badly do you think it would throw singers who knew the song and expected there to be one in there?

I sing a couple of songs with long codas (or outros as some of the karaoke companies have dubbed them). I don't get much applause on them, especially Ramblin' Man, which has a 2 minute coda at the end. When the KJ immediately fades it, I probably get more applause than I do for any other song.

A lot of the karaoke companies have done this -- last night I heard the intro to "No Shoes, No Shirts, No Problems" and expected it to last 50 seconds. Au contraire, 8 measures and right into the words.

I don't mind a couple of the long breaks from SoundChoice -- they have some really kick-butt guitar players there -- but many of them are so bad it seems completely pointless. At least on SC's 2-minute coda for Ramblin Man you can hear some of the best karaoke guitar you will ever come across.

On a busy night, I won't let long outros play ie Freebird, Comfortably Numb, etc...slow night where I need to fill out some time in the show, long outro may be a saving grace.

I agree & Sound Choice produces the true versions most of the time because of people ASKING for them.  Their own forums where hot on this topic years ago where people were sick of the chopped versions of songs & wanted the music to be like what they heard on the radio or their albums - complete with long breaks, & outros.  Outros can be faded by a kj, so that isn't a big deal.  Long breaks can be used by the singer to walk down to their table to get a drink, we have one guy that does Pink Floyd - Money, he brings up a newspaper & pulls it out during the break, gets a good laugh.

Yeah, I hate those long instrumentals anywhere in the song but at the end (I can just walk away from the mic when I'm done singing). I mean, What do I do? Look at the screen? look at the audience? I usually look at my husband or friends and chuckle or something. But now that I've killed 3 seconds, what do I do next?

And where I karaoke there doesn't seem to be a problem with people taking advantage of duets, at least that I've noticed. There's only about one or two a night. Maybe we're just a bunch of narcissistic stage hogs who don't like sharing the spotlight with anyone else :swg:

And as far as long songs, there is a long duet that I hate. It's that duet from Rocky Horror Picture Show. OMG!!! We have a group of friends who have private karaokes parties at their houses and one friend in particular does that song EVERY SINGLE TIME, sometimes by herself, sometimes with a partner. As soon as the music starts playing, a few of us look at each other and roll our eyes. By the end of it I want to strangle myself with the mic cord.

Huh? No "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights" and "American Pie" ?

Invariably the worst singers pick these two "extremely" long songs...I have only heard "American Pie" done well once in the over 10 years I have been KJing...It has been picked a couple of hundred times...sorry, I know people are having fun but...

I keep saying I am going to remove these two songs from my books...

Normally I do not have any problems with duets as the rotations are manageable either way I choose to go.    When I 1st started to KJ - we used to have a "duets rotation" in where we would take all our duet requests and do them in that rotation, this way everyone knew what was going on.  It seemed to work.
Just an idea

I think I know that guy - well no probably not the same guy!  1 time I heard it correctly, used to be his regular song for a couple years, & guess what, he CHOSE to do the shortened version even though I had the full as well.

PBTDBL I have 1 couple in that can NAIL it, all the way to the ending both parts.  Unfortunately they recently divorced so will probably never hear it correctly again.

Lonny,

I thought after posting that it should probably be in a separate thread. I'm sure you all have been through that "worst karaoke songs" before tho...us newbees don't know.

Made me think of how so many "new" or novice singers always pick the most difficult songs...sure sometimes people say "I've never done this before" and proceed to prove themselves liars...I'm talking about the ones that really have never done it before, and first, can't follow the words and second picked New York, New York. It's hard to say to them before they get up, "Are you sure you want to try this song for your first time?" Then they start singing and you wished you would have said something. I hate to see people do this, because they may never get up to sing again...even with the best knob turning, you can't help...once you get them through understanding how the words work, they still can't sing the song they chose.

I probably should put some pointers in my song books on how to pick your first song...try something easy...please.

Ihave to MAKE myself NOT stare. And the black lipstick! LOLOLOL But at least HE IS "entertaining" like "friday the 13th" or something.

I was at a karaoke place not too long ago where a guy sang Bob Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm".  He did an ok job on it--but that song is such a lllllllloooooonnnnnngieeeeeeeeeeeeee!  It must have about a million verses--give or take a few.  LOL

And as for the instrumental parts--I dance during those parts (as I've said here before).  So if a song has a long instrumental part, it had better be something that I can dance to!   :dancin:  I learned the hard way, though, you need to keep the mic in your hand or the kj will think you're finished--even when, in fact, you will have more singing to do after the instrumental part!

As I've seen duets worked out.  You have two people.  Two songs.  A couple can sing the duet, and one of the others gets to sing another song.  Not necessarily in sequence, however why not ?   Two people

song one= Duet
song two= One of the individuals.

not

song one= Duet
song two= one individual who sang as part of the duet
song three= second individual who sang on duet

nor have I seen it done

Song one and two= Duet.

One person opts to do a duet..  That's THEIR song.

Just the way it's been done in these little joints around here.
