Speaking of abusing your hubby....My husband had the nerve to get me a freakin MOOD ring for my valentines day present and gave me some smart alec comment that I've been "testy" recently.

Who would've thought...darn ring REALLY works! When I'm happy it turns this pretty shade of jade green and when I'm  pizzed off it leaves a big Fu(K!N red mark on my husbands face---LOLOLOL

I bet next year I get roses...DE THORNED!

I wonder how y'all would handle the egomaniac at one of the bars in Ny on Tuesday nights!   Yes, he can sing well (most of the time), but he sure likes to let the bar know how me loves himself!  One of his most annoying traits is to insist that the KJ turn up his mike... WAY UP!  And then he removes the pop-guard from the mic so he can get more volume.  Last time I was there, I had to muffle the sound with my hand over my ear as it was actually getting painful.  I don't really understand why the KJ submits to his "turn-up-the-mic" request.... how would you lot handle this?

I'd crank him up in the monitors so he "thinks" he's loud but the house gets a good mix.
And anyone who defaced any of my equipment was asked or forced to leave. If he's as big of an ego as that- he won't want to be embarrassed publicly like that. I would warn him ONE time that if he takes off the guard his "turn" is "over" if he does it again..he's done instantaneously.

Thats just me. Most KJs would probably be kinder and it has been a long time since I had to deal with a-holes like that. FRankly...most braggarts aren't popular with the crowd and they wouldn't mind a bit if he were asked to leave. I know that I would never get to a point where I had to cover my ears...perhaps he needs his ears checked? Wax build up or something if he needs it that loud. I like to hear myself as much as any singer..but not when it damages my eardrums or isn't a good mix with the music. I would just DIE if I saw someone standing there with their hands over their ears

I'd tell him "NO". And tell him EXACTLY why!

If he doesn't believe you, take PICTURES of folks covering their ears or wincing when he's singing. RECORD him doing it and play it back.

People don't have a CLUE sometimes what they sound like. That's YOUR job, and if I were in your shoes, that's EXACTLY what I'd ttell him.

If he doesn't like it, tell him that there are other opportunities for him to sing his heart out  elsewhere !

I would tell the KJ that you had to muffle the sound with your hands over your ears because it was getting painful.  Give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't know what it sounded like out in the audience.  Any decent KJ is going to make sure that doesn't happen again.

OK, so now his latest method of getting more exposure is to bring in a couple of friends and then submit song requests for himself and for his friends.  Of course, when his friend's name is called, he joins them on stage for a "duet", only the "duet" is more like him singing and his friend providing back-up vocals, which are almost inaudible because his mic volume is way up!  To add insult to injury, he proceeds to sing with the "fill" music while waiting between his song and his friend's song!

It is interesting to note that he gets very, very little applause at the end of his songs.... maybe everyone else in the bar is as annoyed as I am!

During the third instance of this last night, I left the bar, and will probably not return.  Another ex-regular!

I'd say you're correct. You should have asked a few other patrons to verify it then possibly said something to the KJ. It's his show - he should be able to control one annoying jackazz...I know from interaction here that you are a class act Murr--I can promise you that if "I" were the KJ and I had to choose between someone like you (who has a genuine talent as well I might add) ans some hot air balloon who was running regulars LIKE yourself away...that would be the easiest thing I've ever decided.

Woooo! This got pretty interesting! I wasn't going to contribute to this thread for fear of being labeled whatever, but now I get an idea of how a kj can make or break a singer's heart! LMAO
I haven't been into karaoke much lately, and haven't been out live anywhere for quite a while now.....maybe it was just a phase I was going through? Whatever I had when I first started a few years ago has slowly faded away I suppose. My voice is weak.....probably from smoking 2 packs or more a day.
I've figured one thing for sure though, most singers want to be heard. They thrive on attention I suppose. Why else would anyone sing?
Then there's the guy like me who started out bashfully and redfaced, but to this day, is still afraid to face a crowd with whatever I'm trying to squeak out. LOL
I think most of the stuff I've submitted here at SS is stinky, but nice people say it's good? Who knows? I know.
I can tell who the egocentrics are here at SS too. I wonder if they act the same while in public? There probably isn't a better way to show one's love of self than to try to entertain a crowd of other self-lovers by squeaking one's heart out on stage. LOL
I guess a singer's personal success depends on attending a preferred venue after all? Kind of the same as participating at SS. If you go where other people like you, you're sure to leave with some sense of accomplishment?
On the other hand, show up at a new place and maybe all of your good time friends aren't all present for your self-gratifying display of perfection? LOL
Or show up at the same venue all the time because you like the kj and because they make you feel worthy of spilling your guts in public only to get your key changed or humilated over the mic just for altering the mood of the kj who happens to be of the opposite sex?
That's why I think kjs should charge a fee for every song sang by a patron.
I mean if it's that much trouble just to try and deal with an occasional difficult jerk off, atleast one way of controlling your show is to let 'em pay for being an a$$!! LMAO  :2cents:
I still love y'all.........

everytime I even THINK I'm getting fairly good at singing, I visit a new place and try to sing there... if I get a good response that appears genuine, fine... but nine outta ten times, I've NAILED a song, only to get a lukewarme response...

me sucks bigtime! LOL!

Nah you are pretty good, I think what the response has to do with the reg's (cliques) & they aren't open to new voices for whatever reason.  We get that on occasion a great singer will come in for the first time & get a blah response afterward.  The next singer is an alright regular & get applause everywhere.
What happened to the days where everyone clapped for everyone either because they were good or because they were done?!?!?

At a certain point one doesnt have the need to (nail it) every time. I dont need applause if the crowd is paying attention while singing then after are talking louder then you know that you gave them energy Then they have to give it back and there are many ways applause is just the intial way.

When Im hosting I dont expect applause 80 % percent of the time because they expect a fairly decent performance and a smile is all it takes. But when I sing a rquest or whilre inspired and they go nuts it is the best feeling in the world. When hosting I get a bigger satisfaction when a singer gets good applause then I know I have done my job.

oh I don't NEED applause, but like Lonnie said, when a regular just does an okay job, and you KNOW you did good and get nothing or little back, it is a bit dismaying.

I sing because I love it! If I didn't, I'd go play texas hold'em!

I know what you're saying Matt. Applause doesn't necessarily mean much. If you know you gave a great performance, which most singers can tell if they really listen while they sing, it just means that a few might be intimidated by the new guy.......just in case they're planning on winning the next $25 in the next mediocre contest. LMAO

I went to an American Legion one night, where you're suppose to be a member, but the night was open to anyone who wanted to enter the contest. I copped a ride with the kj going in, but I never entered the contest. Just because I didn't live in that town, I didn't want to get involved. These things are ongoing usually. I was the first one to sing that night, the contest started later. When the contest was over, I was the singer who sang while the votes were being tallied. Some dude was giving me the dirtiest looks all night!! He was an excellent singer and won the measely 1st prize that night, no problem.
I just thought it was funny how some singers react to other singers. I don't do it to be competitive, just for fun. He must've liked my song. Now that I think of it, not many others were very friendly either. I had a good time getting soused though. LMAO

Applause is funny. I go one place where I used to get lots of applause, but not any more. I sing so much there, the regulars expect me to do a pretty reasonable job.

Now I sometimes get real good applause if I do a new  crowd-pleaser of a song; but mostly I get less than singers who are bad. I don't take it personally -- I know I am probably the best male singer there, but I also know I am not such a vocalist that I am going to be wowing people. After all, I am a relative beginner with only two years singing. Pretty good for a beginner, but still all of that.

I don't do those really frenetic high note songs with my heavy bass-baritone voice, and those are the ones that seem to get crowds going. Tenors are probably always going to outdo me for applause. 8-)

I'll fight you on that comment about tenors beating a bass. I like the tenors--but a good baritone or bass like Brook Benton, Barry White, Lou Rawls, Randy Travis, Will Downing, Kevin Mahogany, and so many others...they are "tops" in my book! Not only would you get frenzied applause from me if you sound like that.. you'd have a drink waiting for you when you walked off stage. High notes are impressive in many cases but one of my musician friends said it best when we were discussing Mariah Carey. He said "she's got a great range but it's hard to like someone when she seems so desperate- why does she have to blow her wad in every song"? LMAO!...I never forgot that blow your wad comment and it made me rethink how I sing. I still appreciate the high singers like Mariah and Christina Aguilera...but I also really appreciate the low ones too. If you wanna hear a great low female on SS check out morganlefey(if you haven't already). Vicki's a singing machine! I told her one time she had a "juicy rich sound and that I could tell she was one of those singers that understand that high long and lound do NOT a good singer make" I'll say that to you. If you can sing..you can sing...and if you can sing LOW and do it well.. that makes you a rare breed. Good bass voices are not common- don't sell yourself shorter than a tenor because of range. You both could have the same range- only yours extends lower where his goes higher. It's all good!

i totally agree....when my honey sings songs that go way down low
i have to follow him up on stage with a billy club ( ;) ) so i can beat
off all the females that are swooning all over the place...

...and i swoon when i listen to 'wikki'....i could listen to her all day
(and sometimes i do...that girl has a lottt of songs,  LOL)

Bruddy hell I turn my back for 5 mins and get talked about... Milo... Paula...
Let me tell you, I would trade my voice for a high long sustained note any day but it aint never going to happen, so I make the best of what little range I have.
So its you two who are responsible for the increased listen on my subs I thought I was being bombed...the poor people who have gone to listen are going to be so disappointed  LMAO
