I don't think I'd ever convince myself to do it again.

Honestly, if I could get up there and sing my best and not win, I'd walk away smiling cause I had a fun time. But when you get up there, after puking and having a migraine at the mere THOUGHT of doing the contest, and your throat closes up, and you feel like you're gonna pass out on stage... and you're quite certain you must have sounded like shyt through it all.... Lol, then you just walk away pizzed off at your own stupid self. So I don't do contests anymore.

I used to do fiddling competitions as well- and truthfully did pretty good in those, I have a few trophies and ribbons ...  but never once did I play my best on stage. You think singing is hard while nervous as hell, try working a fiddle bow and making true notes with your hands shaking:)

And I finally got to where I'd down some alcohol in the last hour before I was to compete.   Not good. Better to just realize I'm not made of competition material. I'm not NEAR brave enough for it.

Sounds as if you had fun with it though- with good results. You should keep it up. Honestly, I wish I could..... I'd do it just for the experience and fun of it- and yeah, always would be hoping I could win something-someday. But I have a bit of a panic/anxiety thing going on anyhow, and it all comes to life when I get up there to be judged.

>Tinkermom, am I hijacking your thread?<  :D .... sorry, didn't mean to.

I guess I was maybe about 21, when karaoke first kinda got big around here. But, not until a few years ago did I get to where I don't shake in my shoes so bad. (at the rough old age of 39)  LMAO New places I do still get nervous, but not the place I've been singing at for the last few years. I know all the people there so well, it's gotten to be comfie for me.

Then I thought, "Hey, my voice is coming out pretty well," and that helped me relax more.  I've heard other people say that has happened to them, too.

Well, I tell ya. If I'm having a good voice day, and the system is equaled out good where I can hear myself and the music correctly... it boosts my confidence and it DOES help you relax, and therefore sing better. This may sound funny to some (quit laughin', Lol)... but even if I LOOK better a certain night, I think it boosts my confidence and makes me sing better. Yikes.... maybe I'm just too vain.  LOL

But really, if I go out and think my hair looks bad that night, and my favorite jeans weren't clean to wear, and I forgot to bring my lipgloss.... all that good stuff.... I think my singing suffers. Really, I'm being serious. Confidence can do a LOT.

Matter of fact, I'm gonna go home and convince my husband of that. I'm gonna tell him he needs to buy me some new "karaoke jeans", maybe even some new "karaoke lipgloss"... so I can "sing better". (i'll let ya know if he falls for it, haha)

Wether this "Diva" has any true talent or not....is questionable.

See,  This might still be somewhat geographic..  (I guess when at dogshows I should stop giggling whenever somebody uses the term B1tch, too).  Diva around here is seldom used as a stigmatized term.  The actual definition of "Diva" is still commonplace among trained performing female singers, and reserved for the best of the best. I guess in some areas the term has become slang-speak and mostly synonymous with "Priss", "Princess", "JAP".  Diva still does mean gifted female singer in many areas, and seldom used in the condescending context, at least so-far around these backwards parts.  EVEN today, it's an honor to reach the level of "Diva", and a few mezzo-sops advertise themselves as "Divas" proudly.  Some are of course A-holes too !   But even this term is earned among some, and attached when earned ~

You know, Kappy, I'm sure at one point "diva" was only used in its appropriate context, but these days a lot of terms have been hijacked as self-imposed labels. "Princess" was everywhere a while back. Of course they're not literal. How many of these girls wearing a princess t-shirt are actually of royal descent? Now it's mostly the little girls with their Disney princesses, which is cute.

Charmin, thanks for validating my original post...in my mind anyway. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who had encounters with these types of people (or even worse, was I just seeming catty or jealous?). Being a newbie, I'm never sure how I'll come off.

Anyway, I'm not saying divas bad. They're actually kind of fun to watch.  Like I said, I think they add color to the world.  The girl I was describing actually tried out for American Idol a few years ago. She never made it past the first audition. She's not a bad singer. I think she's got some talent. And she's a blast to watch perform because she's got so much attitude up on that stage. That particular karaoke bar is not one I go to that much though. She's fun for a night but I don't feel all that comfortable making it a regular place I'd go to.

PS...Love this site!

I just laughed and snorted my way through all THAT..I am STILL snorting and chuckling. But after all that..... Now I'm just confused!!!

I was raised that Diva meant "Great female singer" like Steve said and yeah I was raised in a small hicksville town in the deep south.

I watched all the Diva concerts on VH1- Granted when they started putting girls like Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears in that category I figured all the good singers must be busy so they loosened the term  with some creative license to now include a HOT girl that happens to sing...um kind of... so I altered my definition a bit.

Then I moved to San Francisco and found that it means skinny Man with breasts a wig and dressed up like woman- only more feminine(and a word that sounds like itchy and starts with a "b") so I altered my definition yet again

The as I got to KNOW aforementioned Divas. I came to think it was a term for magnificently flamboyant with a flair for the dramatic and a love for the spotlight...and looked at their eccentric ways as "endearing" They usually have VERY soft hearts under all the glitter and rhinestones...and are even more vulnerable to having their feelings hurt than "normal" people. I bet the girl you say "could never be dethroned" would go home and cry if you or anyone told her she wasn't "all that" To a person like that "what others think" is the most important thing in the world. Of course her pride would never allow you to see that. But I know many like that and they are the most easily wounded of all. (Though she IS EXTREMELY wrong for not being attentive or appreciative  to fellow singers at a show) Just keep in mind that almost ALL of it is just another type of "show"

A  few people have called me a diva and since they are my friends(gulp!-I HOPE!) I thought they meant it as a compliment...kind of like Morgan/Vikki called me a "cheeky cow" the other day- at first I thought she was saying I was an impertinent fat girl..then my husband - who lived in europe told me it was a term of endearment when used it the context she said it...kind of like when I call my friends be-yotch because they look so good in a outfit I could NEVER wear. It's an oblique compliment. THAT made me feel much better and I kind of like being a cheeky cow! LMAO!  :rotflmao: I LOve VIKKI!

Then... I have heard extremely demanding women like Barbara Striesand and Mariah Carey called that in a very unflattering manner.

Now I see it being applied to egotistical be yotches whose estimation of their talent FAR outweighs it's actual worth.

So- I guess the term can be any or all of the things mentioned- it's all in the context. I have to say after living in a city like San FRan...the "divas" here may act nasty..and some of them may be as bitter as an unripe persimmon...but Oh my Gawd,,,Those costumes! and the effort they exert into putting on a show! ( I am speaking of Drag Queens who have also become synonymous with the term Diva) You may not want to be around'em for long...or in close proximity at all..but there is no denying that they can't be ignored. And a "diva" in almost any of the mentioned contexts usually had her/his own brand or repellant fascination else we wouldn't be having this conversation...BTW Tink...were you referring to me in your original post?????   LOL I sincerely hope not(fingers crossed)

Being from New Zealand means there are few that understand my terms of endearment just ask if you think  I am being offensive...most of the time I am not, in fact if I were to try I would leave you in no doubt
Loves you too ;-)

Means the same thing in Provincetown here on the East Coast.    These are locations where if I accidently drop something I make sure I leave it, either that, or kick the item back to CT.  Never again will I play a gig in those areas of Massachusettes either btw

I love being the cooler for most diva's here around Austin, I've sung a Man-diva's song and he didn't like that (I might've even sung it better than him), I preemptively take the heat out of a girl who does the same song and same "sexy" dance at every other venue I frequent, and a gay diva (who is usually catty at me because I don't take him as the greatest performer ever) and during a contest he was a judge who destroyed my dead on Neil Diamond America,  Then I replied "Wow I'm the first straight guy who can say that I'm a victim of Gay bashing" to a great response from the gay club to which he flamed up and not in that way.

But the "Diva" thing is an overstatement nowadays.

Bloviated ?   Believe it or not,  I've been guilty a time or two :(   Or do you mean Superfluous ?

Either way,  sometimes I get the runs and can't curtail my verbiage :bawling:
