Since I rarely listen to music on the radio for years the first time I heard a song was at karaoke or when I sang them. I sang every Big & Rich song before I heard them even some Gretchen Wilson. Sometimes I catch somebody on the today show at times.
When we shifted to a KJ/DJ format that sort of changed sometimes getting the original first.. Is this normal or am I one of the few? Just curious what is the percentage of new songs that you first hear at karaoke shows versus the original?

Don't listen to the radio much anymore - nothing current (at least rock) that is really worth anything. Everything I hear is through karaoke first.

I constantly have a radio or cd playing.... (though I'm a bit of a channel surfer).... and yet a TON of songs I hear first at karaoke. Many times I've gotten turned on to a new singer by hearing someone do one of their songs I like- and so I go out and grab the original cd.
And I like a lot of obscure stuff that isn't played on radio. I'll get an oddball song on a karaoke cdg and like the melody, so I'll dig up the original and learn it to do at karaoke and someone will come up and ask "who sings that originally?". And then there's the bluegrass songs I always do. Hardly anyone is familiar with those. My local KJ went out and bought the CB 6 disk bluegrass set, just cause she liked the Rhonda Vincent & Claire Lynch songs I sang from them.
You know, the more I think about it.... what are those dang record companies complaining about? They should be paying US commissions, cause we spread their music around better than radio does at times. :D
Another thing that causes this..... how quickly they get karaoke tracks made these days. I was singing ALL of Gretchen's songs off her first 2 cd's long before the originals hit radio (except the first big hit off of each cd).... cause the cdg's were released (very quickly) as a carbon coby of the original. (minus the signer, of course)

That's funny--a lot of the more recent songs I know ONLY from people singing them at karaoke! I love hearing guys sing "Hemorrhage"--never heard Fuel's version. *memo to self: look for it on YouTube sometime*
I first heard "Before He Cheats" at karaoke as well. I loved it at first. I even downloaded the video off of YouTube once when I was gonna go to a karaoke place, so I could get the melody firmly implanted in my brain. Well, as it turns out, that particular kj didn't have it. (That was ok--I can always find plenty of stuff to sing.) Well, it was several weeks before I had a chance to go karaoke-ing again, and in that time, the song got played ALL THE TIME on the radio station we listen to at work, and I got really sick of it! I got to thinking, "At this rate, I don't care if I never sing this!" And sure enough, nowadays everyone and their mama is singing it for karaoke! Sometimes I think that if I hear one more person sing it, I'm going to take a Louisville Slugger to THEIR headlights. (kidding) Actually, I think I WOULD like to sing it eventually--it's not getting burned out on the radio as much now. But I'll wait until there aren't so many people singing it--that might take about a year...
Meanwhile, since I've only been doing karaoke for a couple of years, there are probably _zilllions_ of songs I want to do that I haven't done yet--and many of those are songs I have never heard anyone else do for karaoke yet either!

I love singing that song, & learned it through karaoke - BTW it's not really a recent song, it's almost 8 years old.

Yeah, that's one song I've never tried at karaoke. But hell, everyone else has around here:) It's getting that "Redneck Woman" stigma to it, I know what you mean. Speaking of which, we have ONE girl who STILL opens her karaoke night EVERY time with Redneck Woman. Sheesh, that song was SO yesterday. LMAO... and truth is, she doesn't sing it well at all..... but she must think she does. How sad actually.

A lot of songs I hear for the first time are at karaoke first. I don't have time to listen to the radio that much, but I do have young daughters who play their music at home. I will be totally out of touch when they move out.
Have you ever sang a song you've only heard at karaoke? LMAO I have

The only station I listen to here in San Diego is a top-40 type station so anything outside of that genre I hear listening to karaoke. I've heard quite a few songs here. A couple I've even attempted to sing myself. Like Martina McBride's Broken Wing and the Dixie Chicks Travelin' Soldier. Sometimes when I download the original so I can learn it, I like the karaoke version better.

What happens is people will sing the song and I'll get a bit familiar with it. Next thing you know I'll have people asking me to help them with the song. I'll know it enough to get them through it because I've heard other karaoke people sing it. Then I try it on my own. I did that with Redneck Woman and Picture. Boy it was wierd when I heard the songs on the radio for the first time. LMAO
