The whole discussion of egomaniacs got me to thinking about another type of egomaniac: THE DIVA.

Now, my position is for the diva. I think they add color to the world. And they're not a problem in the sense they get so drunk as to become obnoxious or do any kind of harm to the mic or other equipment. Sometimes they're perfectly nice and are normal under any other instance.  Sometimes, not.

I'm sure we can all name at least one diva who we either love to love or love to hate, whether it be a celebrity or someone we know or know of.

One bar in particular my husband and I sometimes go to comes my mind. This bar's diva has claimed her territory and will not be dethrowned. She sings loudly from her table right along with the singers up on stage so everyone can hear how good she sing. She looks bored during others' performances and never claps, unless it's one of her posse. She sings with such passion that she's probably imagining she has an audience of thousands with her back-up dancers and singers right behind her. She's sweet to all the right people: the bartender, KJ, her adoring fans (the regulars), that is, as long as they're lavishing her with adoration. She's noticebly threatened by anyone with a semi-decent voice, especially the women.

Now, this is one extreme case of the diva. Anyone else with similar stories? Or are YOU the Diva? Do tell!!

I would suggest that men, albeit in touch with their feminine side perhaps, can also be divas  LMAO
I have never actually really come across a female diva but when I was kjing I did have a male diva who would swan in and acknowledge his audience and haughtily ask me to line up "his" song...no filling out a slip for this dude
I got so as I knew what time he was likely to be coming in and would be doing "his" song as he walked thru the door
Guess that makes me the diva right?

I joke sometimes about being a diva, but I don't think I really am.  I'm just someone who loves to sing.    :D  Besides, I don't sing high enough to be a diva.   LOL

LMAO

I actually can say I don't think I've experienced a Diva yet. Knock on wood !
Ego usually doesn't bother me unless they are cutting down other singers or telling me how to do my job. They make themselves look like idiots not me.  LMAO

I'm too dang shy and all that dumb stuff in real life to ever even TRY to be a Diva.... ask Don & Kurt, they'll tell ya. Am I a flirt? Yeah, a little bit. But a Diva? No. I don't have it in me. Divas tend to be a bit stuck on themselves... and in actuality, I'm pretty much the opposite. (and usually stuck on a guy) Lmao...... And did I mention I'm a terrible smartazz?

Okay, forget that..... do NOT ask Kurt:)

I bewitched him you see, with my little (and I do mean little, Lol) Halloween costume. So, he's biased.. he can't answer correctly.  LMAO

Legs? Kurt, I'm 5'2"...

(I know, I used to say 5'1", but I just got measured from my doc... and she did it very accurately... and here all these years I've thought I was SHORT.... but I'm actually 5'2")

But anyways, I've always heard men like long, long legs.... mine are just so-so. (not short, mind you, this is the 5'2" me talking now, but they're for sure not long)

Wiggly behind? Only when on the dance floor:)

Never really thought of the title "Diva" as a term that had any more of a stigma than one would expect from Maestro, Prodigy, or the normal quirks that accompany any highstrung exceptionally talented person.  Diva as I've always understood it is a vocalist who's tops in their field.  Originally Opera singers I think were the Divas, but the ones that won that title were DAMN good !  Nothing to be ashamed of. IOW, I've never thought of it as a term that can just flat out replace arrogant stuckup jackass without the exceptionally high level of talent that earns such quirky behavioural reputations often found as a necessary evil but hey,   I like to think of myself as a "Coddeled Princess" too, so sue me !  <shrug>, wasn't my fault that I was born, why make life tougher than necessary !

(OK,   Where'd those maids put my silk jammies, this really pi$$es me off !   and where're my grapes ???   these 3rd class citizens forget who the king is around here !!!!,  and I think I'm coming down with the sniffles... NURSE !!!,  Damn, it's not easy being me !  Few realize just how lonely it is way up here ! )

Well, welcome to the newest century. (where ya been buddy?)  :D

Diva pretty much describes the gal who struts her stuff (usually mostly bared for all to see), some Diva's are pretty hot, even though if you strip away all the skimpy clothing and makeup they may be found lacking (tho I've met some pretty fugly Diva's too) ..... and she sings her heart out with no worries whatsoever cause she truly believes she is at the top of her form and nobody could knock her off her throne. Wether this "Diva" has any true talent or not....is questionable. Maybe sometimes she does, but not always, and never the amount she THINKS she has. But heaven help anyone who tells her any different, cause she's just gonna think they're "jealous of her".  Nobody could convince her differently.

You can't miss them. They are the loudest in the bar, make a point to know everyone by name so they can call out "hi there" as they walk by tables and make it appear they are "well known", and when they get up on stage... they pause, expecting a hush to fall on the crowd before their song starts. (Like a "get ready to be awed, here I am" type of esp signal is being transmitted to the audience)
(dang.... on second thought... AM I a Diva?) Muahaha.....

(i could tell you where to go to see/hear a few... but i better not)

I've known a few personally. If nothing else, they give us gals who are a bit more down-to-earth and know our failures something to snicker at.  LMAO

It's nothing the same as gals who are "flirts". Flirts don't neccesarily think they're "all that"..... they just have fun finding out how much "all that" they can be if they put their heart and soul into it:)

Charmin's opinion only. Free this time.... next time I'm putting a price tag on it. (gotta raise the money for that condenser mic SOMEhow, Lol)

Interesting description, Char!

I do strut my stuff and flirt at times while singing, if it fits with the song.  But I make no secret of the fact that I'm married (my husband isn't into karaoke and is frequently out of town anyway).  And I'm not there to pick anyone up.  I am there because I LOVE SINGING!!!!!!!!!  My voice isn't bad IMHO (I used to really hate my voice until I had a few years of voice lessons and developed more confidence), but I wouldn't say that I'm "all that".  I've heard people at karaoke places who did a really super job and I really enjoyed their performance, and I thought, "It's a good thing this isn't a contest--they would blow me out of the water!...Wait a minute, no they wouldn't--because if this were a contest, I wouldn't be here.  I'd be singing somewhere else."   LOL

I know what you mean about divas, though.  I haven't encountered many of them at karaoke places, but when I was a choral accompanist in high school, there was another accompanist who thought she was all that and more.

I sometimes sing along, but only because I'm getting into the song, not because I want to show off.  I don't do it that loudly--at least I hope not!

Yeah, I'm a bit of a flirt too. No harm in that. There's not ONE guy at our local bars who would even TRY to get past my hubby to make a pass at me:) They know I'm all about just having fun.

And I've finally gotten comfie enough at karaoke that I can goof off while singing and act silly, or flirty, and not die of shame. They're all drunk anyhow.  I guess I've done a bit of strutting, but only getting into the song, being silly. (gosh- hopefully nobody takes me freakin' serious) LMAO

I'm with you on the contests though. I'm much too shy about those. I've tried twice in my whole life, at one had the guy come up afterwards and say "why did you hide behind your mic and stare at the screen like you were terrified?" Um, duh mister--- I was!! Something clicks on inside me when I know I'm being judged against others, and I turn to a ball of mush.... can't do it.

Our local place has a contest at the county fair (going on now actually).... and the bar owner even tried saying he'd pay my entry fee if I'd join. (cause we're friends, I'm kinda a regular there) I said "why, you want me to pee my pants on your stage that badly?"  :D  The KJ let me be the intro and outro singer at the fair, and I get to again this year... so I still get to sing there on stage, but no "contest pressure". Works for me:) I'm worthless in a competition.

Actually the first time I sang by myself in public--at the tender age of 32 (yes it took me THAT long to get up the nerve)--was in a contest.  But not a karaoke contest--a general talent contest.  I sang "Macavity: The Mystery Cat", from the musical "Cats".  I won, got a nice li'l trophy, and I was really happy about that--but for me, the BEST prize was getting over my nervousness about singing in public!  (solo singing, that is--I'd done plenty of choral singing)  I wasn't thinking too much  about whether or not I'd win the contest; I was nervous about singing!  But you see, not everyone in the contest was singing.  Some were doing skits and magic acts and stuff.  In a karaoke contest, EVERYONE is singing.  So the playing field is a little different.

The funny thing is that when I was in that contest I was really nervous UNTIL I started singing.  Then I thought, "Hey, my voice is coming out pretty well," and that helped me relax more.  I've heard other people say that has happened to them, too.
