Very true Kappy - I have met my share of drunk a--holes. It is in this guys nature to be annoying though without alcohol.

Egoman update: He didn't come in wed night, so I thought my cold shoulder may have worked. Wrong  LMAO He came in last night apologizing for not being there Wed because he had a cold.

I over heard him bragging about his singing to a customer. The customer wise cracked back that he was his idol. I thought finally the crowd is figuring this guy out, but then Egoman replied, Babs is my idol that's why I come here. Wow ! Later in the night he tips me $20 bucks after only singing 2 songs. In amazement I ask what is this for, being he has never tipped me before. He said he'd never tipped me since he's been coming and wanted to make up for it. he didn't ask for any favors for the money and said he realized there wasn't enough time for him to sing again. WOW !!!

So I figure he really doesn't realize how annoying he is, but is trying to get on my good side. Being patient pays off sometimes, but I have the feeling I'll have to pull him aside a few more times.  :D

Well,  Since you know he's obnoxious sober I suppose to say that his behaviour sounds like classic "sober" vs "drunk" stereotypical behaviour is out've the question <hiccup>.  Perhaps relatively sober when you saw him last night so he's a decent individual, yet when he has several drinks he gets sloppy and self-absorbed

Egoman gets my goat. LMAO

I'm closing up Wednesday night and a gal comes to the stage asking for the song Happy Birthday to be sung to her friend. No probelm - When I'm short on time or have a long rotation I just announce it and sing it without the music back up. Then of course ask for big applause for the b-day person.

I start singing and egoman is yelling at me at the top of his lungs as I'm singing that he wants to do the Beatles Happy Birthday song. It was obviously disrupting to the whole process. In mid song I turn to him off mic and yell SHUT UP and continue singing.  LMAO I lost it for a minute, but it felt so good!

I got snippy with him a few times during night because he gets so unbearably annoying, but he insists on coming back for more.  LMAO

He comes on stage to sing with 2 songs. This happens often. He asks which one should I sing. No matter which one I choose he picks the other one. So this time I'd had it. Ticked off I just say why do you bother asking me if you never take my advice !

He's not doing anything bad enough to ban from singing just a constant pain in my butt.

I'd flat out tell him to bring one song like everyone else.

Do you queue up songs on the spot for everyone? If so, that's a highly inefficient rotational system.

For me, I'd love the extra 20 seconds or more while the singer is coming up to queue up the song. Usually that means I have either the disc pulled out ahead of time queued up in the triple-tray player, or enqueued in the show computer.

I flat out won't put up with "oh quick, change my song to this..." I'll warn them the first time, then flat out won't do it the second.

As for egoman's attitude, next time throw a water balloon at him filled with dirty, greasy, soapy water! Or yell back, "I don't come to McDonalds to F*CK with you at YOUR job! Shut the He!! up you insignifigant speck of a man! The best part of you was left on the delivery floor! I'm not saying you're stupid, but you've been told SEVERAL TIMES TO SHUT THE F*ck UP!!! How much more plainer do I have to get?"

Of course, the really dense folks would just mess with you to GET that kinda treatment... like going to a Don Rickles show or something! sheesh!

Knightshow - You're the best ! Of course you said everything I'd love to. I actually thought in my head Wed. " What would Knightshow say".

I do take slips ahead of time, but if someone walks up with a different song # I don't lose any time by changing it.  It doesn't happen very often, so I don't mind.

What I don't like is when someone comes up and wants to discuss what song they're doing next instead of just singing. I usually handle it by saying we don't have enough time for this and cue someone else up while they decide or I'll pick for them without discussion - The music starts and they have to sing.

I actually started to do this with egoman when he said no the other song. I just have to hit the stop button and input the next number so it isn't to bad - just annoying.

I have a sweet gal that doesn't understand the importance of keeping the rotation moving. Wednesday she got on the mic and started talking about her shoes.  LMAO She actually took one off and showed the audience. I announced " Tara has good taste in shoes, but she can actually sing too and started the music". I try to get the point across without ruffling feathers first. She was ready to go with her next song - no down time.

I understand they are there to have fun and don't think about the fact others are waiting. If I can move things along and make my point for next time with a joke I'll do that first.

Lon - I knew someone would make that point.  LMAO

Babs,

I haven't read totally through this thread, but I do have a couple of comments. The first is, you can't allow a person or persons to cause you to loose control of your show. It's very similar to following a strict rotatation, if you let a singer up out of turn (on purpose), it sends a message that you will do that for anyone and soon you have 10 people in your face asking to sing now (or the good ones leave because you compromised your standards). If you allow someone to play "mike hog" or "show hog" or dictate who should sing or shouldn't sing, you are on the verge of loosing control of your show. Not only will you have to deal with him, but you will have others that see what he's doing and they will follow suit. You'll have people talking over the mike during your cue up, during the intros to the songs, and after they are done singing.

My suggestion is, if you feel uncomfortable, have a talk with the management and explain the situation. Ask them to keep an eye on the guy and have a nice little chat with him if he tries to do this again.

There are cases where you need to take yourself out of the equation. It's the houses obligation to take care of the patrons, not yours. My contracts state this very clearly.

If you haven't gotten that advice already, try it.

I guess it's just me, but from the very first time I had someone drop a mic, with a VERY loud "boom", I have always muted the mics between performers. And I leave any mics not immediately in use, muted throughout the song. I find it prevents some nastiness sometimes, and it also keeps the unwanted "duet singer" that jumps up, from being heard, until I can wrestle the mic away from them.

As has been said, it is YOUR show. Period. Don't allow them to take that away from you...

I had someone do that to me once -- the fill-in husband of the real KJ. And another time, with a guy who I think didn't like me because I was friends with another KJ. Neither works where they did any more -- certainly not because of me, because I didn't complain. But if they are in the habit of doing it, I would think it eventually catches up with them, just like it seems to catch up with hosts who can't run a fair rotation.

I'm not in the practice of turning off someones mic, so when it needs to be done it is my last thought. Some people like to dedicate songs or say a little something before they sing. I don't mind it. A lot of the time it is very entertaining.

I don't talk too much before singing--'cause I'm itching to sing!   LOL But occasionally, I'll just make a brief comment.  For instance, last night, I sang Martina McBride's "Valentine" right after another gal sang Metallica's "Search and Destroy".  So when I got up there, I said, "And now for something totally different from what she was just singing..."     :D

Hi Babs...LOL.....LMFAO..again! These forums are hysterical! I think I KNOW your ego dude...is his name TIM??? They HAVE to be related!!!

I did 3 things when Tim started his BS- I went to the bar owner and told him that "it might get nasty and he could possibly lose a customer- but that I had to retain control of my show at all costs" He replied that he'd rather lose TIM than me(he hated Tim's singing in the first place)

I confronted Tim as soon as he walked in and told him to hand me 1 song and 1 song only. I also warned him that the song would start the minute I called his name and to be ready because I wasn't going to sacrifice any more time with his chatter. I said that he was welcome to talk or sing during his song and as long as he said nothing offensive over the mic- it was his choice but the music was starting and would NOT be restarted.

He behaved but the next week was back to his old ways braggin about how good he sang. This time he had the audacity to "forbid" another patron from turning a specific song calling it "His" song. I called him up with an evil wink and announced to the crowd ...We're having a contest. ( I eyed my boss across the room and he nodded agreement with what ever I was getting ready to say) I said Tim YOU are gonna come up here and show US how this song is SUPPOSED to be done....then the Allen( the other patron) is gonna come up here and give it a try.. and we're gonna let the audience choose thew winner. I Knew that it wouldn't Be TIM. The Winner gets 5 shots of their choice to be given to whomever they select. The whole place erupted!! Tim with all his ego came stauntering up there and unbeknownst to him- I raised the song a step..He wasn't good enough to realise what I'd done and he just thought he had an off nite..(Made my freaking GIG to hear him squeekin and breaking on the high parts! LOL!) Allen came in and I really played up the crowd for him...then I gave him the most awesome sound and juicy reverb EVER...the crowd was already wanting "Allen to win"  so of course the crowd picked Allen by a landslide!  After they quieted down I said over the mic "Tim...that song belongs to no one- if it did it would be Paul McCartney"( who wrote said sing) And there are 2 things you need to remember. One is no matter how great you believe you are there is ALWAYS someone JUST around the corner who can whip your butt singing!! Then I made some smart azz remark like "whitney houston doesn't know "I" exist- and everyone laughed. And the second thing is a popular person is ALWAYS going to win a contest based on crowd response over talented person anyday- so if you act like a jerk- you can sing like Paul McCartney himself and you'll STILL get beat by a "Nice Bob Dylan wannabe!"

After the show I also pointed out the various ways that a KJ can take revenge and told him about the sound and key change. I very nicely said if you EVER want to sound "GOOD" ay MY show again you'll remember that because I'm not warning you again.

Took him 2 weeks to test me again---I messed his sound up and he told me to F off on the mic..and I told him (On the mic) to get the F out of MY SHOW! and not to come back!" he tried to come back in the following week and I had the owner escort him out. Banning a customer only happened 3 times in the 4 years I ran shows. That was one- the other was for a similarly insane skitzo girl who psychoed out on me over the mic. And the 3rd time was a stalker who I had a restraining order out against. So set the precedent now and take control of your show! It'll either make him behave or it will make him show his tail so you can permanently rid yourself of this hemmhroid!

paula, I was with you, until you started messing with his "setup"...

TO me, I'm the guy that will adjust EVERYONE the same. I've had my divas, and very similar to you, when this guy said over the mic that THIS was his song and nobody was ever supposed to sing it, I cut him off, and the music off, and QUICKLY said on the mic that NOBODY could claim a specific song... unless they BOUGHT them and handed me the cdg. I reiterated that it was MY show and that I PERSONALLY could claim that all the songs were MINE to claim, as I had the thousands and thousands of dollars invested...

then I looked at this fool and said "Now you wanna try this again?" and turned on the music (requeuing the song) and his mic.

He tried to laugh it off, but afterwards came up to me and said he was going to find another show, as he felt I was disrespectful to him.

I told him, "you're lucky I allowed you to finish. Sorry you feel the way you do, but don't EVER try to controll stuff at MY gig! EVER!" and glared at him. He swallowed, and left. I ran into him at another place one time, and the kj there mentioned to me she was sure tired of his sh*t... when I told her my story about him, she blanched a bit, and said the venue wouldn't ever support her for doing that. I said that if I couldnt' run the gig on my terms, I wouldn't do it... that they were free to buy their own equipment and music and learn how to run it themselves....

Babs,  chances are..... when he finally realizes he's not charming you, he'll head off somewhere else to another show, thinking he'll get more attention.

Sounds like you run a good show and have a local crowd that likes you, so they'll stand behind you... and a pesky jerk will eventually see that and move on.

This is one of the main reasons I probably would not make a great KJ. I don't have that much patience, and I have NO tolerance for egomaniacs and/or divas. I go from zero to bytch much too quickly..... I'm sure I would have hit him upside the head with a mic already.  :D

LMAO

I'll try to remember that, should the need ever arise;)

I can pretty much write out a list of things that do NOT hold up, and can't be replaced by warranty, if smacked up against your hubby's head, or flung at him from across the room. (cell phone- absolutely not... digital camera- didn't stand a chance)

Ah, I'm partly kidding... I'm not all that mean spirited.

I just don't like idiots and braggarts... and wouldn't take it very well if I ran up against a lot of the things Babs does at her gig. I come unraveled quicker than that. I'm a person who generally gets along well with everyone I know and meet. But my sweet side tends to melt away pretty quickly under pressure;)

Me 2!  I'll just stick to singing and leave the kj'ing to those of you who know what the heck you're doing.    :D
