Very well said Steven, i have some what the same views. Only i seem to get it from both sides it seems. Because of my religious convictions, i get it from the far religious right, and the left radicals. I hear it all the time from my church friends what a big time hypocrite i am because i play in a band and do karaoke in clubs, yet play in church on sundays, and do gospel karaoke for our young folks in our church groups. My band buddies, and those at the club seem to think i have no business doing  karaoke on saturday nights and playing on the alter sunday mornings. Well, i'm not going to argue with them. And i also do sing- a-longs for our elderly in our area nursing homes. So i respect my elders, and if one of those sweethearts needed something i would do my best to help them. But i don't care if it's rock, 50's, country, i guess i still try to respect everyones views. I don't like putting a label on someone either. But like you said..it's really difficult sometimes. And karyoker i think you are preaching to the choir here just a little. I really do see your points. Most are valid, but there is really nothing we can do to change things. I think most of the laws surronding this situation is confusing to say the least. But, i still respect your views, and your right tosay it. Please don't get the idea that i would hijack your post, or any others, and "Extremist", is just a tad over the top. Actually, i'm a conformist.....and yes...i still open the door for the ladies :D

I don't know of any laws that state "Musicians must never interact in a Karaoke environment", Of course when we were growing up in the 60's there was a law in the classic genre stating "Musicians must NEVER use parallel 5th's and Jazz is the Swamp of Music" too but all this changes with the times.  There are of course loads of all/none people in the arts that are intolerant of all that's different, people will always be somewhat rigid, myself included.

While in the 1960's a person debating that "The turntable is a musical instrument" would've been the laughing stock of a debate, try debating with a pro "DJ" today that very same perspective. See who becomes the laughing stock. The term "Traditional" isn't all inclusive in any artform.

(OK, so I got my a@@-kicked several years back in a "Musician" debate where a DJ informed me about things I didn't know such as compositional, and percussive applications where turntable use is extremely difficult, and requires skill, he informed me my mistake was believing that something must be "traditionally" accepted as a musical instrument in order to actually "BE" a musical instrument by definition; He was correct, several musicians got our butts kicked simultaneously that day) :(

(So, Why can't the same be said for the talented vocalists in Singer's Showcase ? They are everybit as talented as vocalists singing with live musicians DESPITE the type of backing they opt to use). Whether the accompanist is something I don't like doesn't mean a thing, fact is the accompaniment can help me too !  Jam tracks for instance when a band isn't available, etc.  Guitaroke, it's GREAT that this exists !!!!

I gave up this all/none thinking around the time I ran like hell out've the America Online "Fender Sux, Gibson ReWlz DeWdZ" rooms over 10 years ago.

I agree 100% Steven....no arguments here. In fact, i have played with singers, who could not stay in time, who had poor phrasing, and forgot words. I have heard karaoke singers, who could sing anything..you name it, they could down right git'er done. And lets face it, if you watch that dreadful Country Music Award Show on TV, that is all alot of those "Superstars" are doing, basically karaoke, to their own hits. So i agree with you................

and of course everybody can tell the difference in tone between the Tele's of that year that were manufactured with #300-999 serial numbers, because once you get into the blonde tele's with the 4 digit serial numbers they lack some of that vintage vibe, and some might mistake the sound for a 51 blonde Esquire thru a Vox amp with a 15 with a white patch chord !  Lord knows,  even I've been guilty of making such a mistake !

Btw, Karaoke for food,  I started chatting about steel guitars in my Music and Musicians thread awhile back,  you didn't get to that area I suppose.

Sorry I do not respect the opinions of anyone, regardless of age, who engage and/or encourage others to blatently break laws.  Being older does not give you special permission to decide what laws you can abide by and what ones you don't.  Exactly what age makes you an "elder"  and more importantly why are there senior citizens in prison.

Do I respect my elders?  In the vast majority of cases I do, but it's not guaranteed.
